My Weather Journal (Shutterbug Books) ReviewI wanted to write a quick review of this item mostly because it wasn't what I thought it was. I was looking for an actual journal for keeping track of our local weather and while such an idea can be created easily enough from items at hand, I had thought that having an actual official weather recording journal might be a bit more exciting as we began this. Alas, that was not what this was.
"My Weather Journal" is simply an introduction to temperature for the young child. It It covers seven of the twelve months with an average temperature if you live in a four season climate in the northern hemisphere. The "hands on" activity portion of this book is a sliding thermometer that can be accessed from every page so that your child or student can slide the mercury to the temperature given for the month in question. Each 2-page spread offers a photograph of the time of year with a journal entry such as the one for March 11th:
Dear Journal,
Today the weather is damp and foggy.
All of the winter snow has melted.
There might be rain on the way.
The temperature is 45 F.
It is a good day to stay inside and write in my journal.
And so on for the other months. The book is clearly intended for the K-1 crowd but could go along with any math lesson covering temperature if your child happens to be getting it in a different grade. My one gripe would be only offering the Fahrenheit scale. In a world that is mostly metric I would have appreciated covering from the git go that there is another common form of measuring temperature and have the early experience of comparing the two and seeing the difference so that it might begin to be natural for the mind to automatically have some reference points besides 0 and 100 when thinking centigrade.
Despite it being a little "young" in my son's case, we did keep the book. He still enjoyed playing with the thermometer and afterward was more inclined to run around the house looking for thermometers to tell him the temperature inside and out than he was after simply filling in the obligatory answers on his math worksheets. I'll count that for something -- if not exactly what I was looking for still a catalyst; but we're still going to make a legitimate weather journal and keep daily outside readings, general weather observations and advance to cloud types (starting with cirrus, stratus and cumulus as a starter and advancing a bit more later on down the line).My Weather Journal (Shutterbug Books) Overview
