Making Folk Toys and Weather Vanes ReviewI'm always searching for good toy making instructions and it is difficult to find one. This book is frustrating. I attempted to use "American Man" pattern from the book and found:
Although material dimensions were given, there were no instructions on which dimension was meant for which piece. That was a relatively easy work-around on the pattern I chose, but will be a problem/time-consuming to figure which dimension fits a many-pieced pattern.
Pattern drawings are sloppy. The width of each arm of the "American Man" is different. Would make an odd looking figure. I don't believe the arm lenghts are appropriate either and have adjusted. The picture of the completed toy that the author provided seems to have appropriate arm lenghts and different than the pattern's dimensions. I notice that for some toys, patterns are provided for only part of the pieces, the rest is up to the reader.
If you are looking for ideas and want to design your own piece around an idea, this book may be for you. But, I want clear, easy, no-sweat instructions and patterns with minimal chatter about toy history, finishes, techniques, materials, equipment, etc.Making Folk Toys and Weather Vanes OverviewThis work aims to bring the past into the present with original designs inspired by 19th-century English and American folk art. The toys and vanes, like those once made by village carvers and blacksmiths, are easily constructed with just a few tools. Projects presented include a rocking horse that really rocks and a red-nose reindeer on wheels. The instructions detail every step of the process and diagrams, patterns and working photographs are also included.
