Ms. Weathers, who has a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in Organizational Management, has worked with the elderly for more than 2 decades. She started her career as a nursing assistant and eventually became Social Services Director in a long term care facility. Drawing on personal experience and her extensive professional knowledge, Ms. Weathers paints a vivid picture of what life is like for nursing home residents who must adhere to a multitude of rules set up for the benefit of the institution or risk being labeled a behavioral problem and given treatment with powerful psychotropic medication in order to control a 'behavior' the staff is having a problem with. She argues that many of the behavioral problems could be eliminated if the nursing home residents were allowed more freedom from arbitrary rules and were given more individualized care plans and attention by staff.Ms. Weathers asserts that the nursing home system, as it is now, is broken and in dire need of a fix. The solution, she says, is culture change, and it will only come about as residents and their families begin to demand it.
