Why Do Elephants Need the Sun ReviewThe plants and animals of the world "depend on the sun's energy to live," and the elephant is no exception. Plants make their own food by photosynthesis by using the sun's energy. The African elephant depends on the Earth's plant life to survive and can eat a whopping "400 pounds of plants every day." Plants and animals also need water to survive and the elephant can hose up SLURP! up to 50 gallons a day. If the sun dries up a water hole the sun can be a partner in filling it back up. This book will show you just how the sun takes part by evaporating "ocean water, turning into water vapor," and eventually getting it back to that water hole in the form of rain.
Gravity is one thing that "helps the sun create its amazing energy." You'll learn about how it keeps an African elephant on the ground and why it "weighs so much more than a baboon." You can watch as the eight planets are held in its orbit by the sun's gravity and will learn why it helps it generate energy. Gravity pushes onto the core of the sun and "the pressure is so great that the hydrogen atoms are transformed into helium atoms" in a process called "nuclear fusion." You'll also learn about the corona, a solar eclipse, the choromosphere, how we use solar power, and many other interesting things about the sun and how it benefits us.
This is an excellent book that will teach the young student many basic scientific concepts in an easy to understand manner. The picture book format is a fun way to present the interconnectivity of things like gravity, nuclear fusion, photosynthesis, weather, and how the African elephant depends on them to survive. Some of the two-page spreads need to be flipped. For example, when the rain falls we watch as monkeys dance on the elephant's back as the reader learns where the rain falls and how the elephant benefits. The artwork is lively, very appealing and meshes well with the text. In the back of the book is a section of interesting facts for the young student to think about. This fun, but not overly simplistic book would be an excellent addition to homeschool or classroom shelves.
