Understanding Weather & Climate with Cd 3rd Edition 2004 Review(This review is of the Third Edition textbook only, not the CD.)
Aguado and Burt's 2004 UNDERSTANDING WEATHER AND CLIMATE is only five years old at the time of this writing, but is two editions out of date already, making for a relative bargain.
This entry-level college textbook (560 pp. long) is well-balanced: it wasn't "dumbed down" to the point of condescending to the readers and avoids false erudition of the "What is your relationship to the weather"? type that I've seen elsewhere. Yet it is not a highly technical volume. It is useful -- all the standard meteorology symbols are appended, but of course no one says you have to learn them -- math and arcana are not granted room here.
I like that UNDERSTANDING WEATHER & CLIMATE does indeed combine weather and climate; the transition from atmosphere to weather to climate studies flows smoothly; and given its age it discusses climate change (sometimes called "global warming") intelligently, without hysterics.
About the only gripe I have with the book is that the Koeppen-Geiger-Trewartha World Climate Systems Map fills only about 1/3 of a page and should have occupied at least one full page, possibly two, to allow smooth reading. Since the map uses symbols for climatic zones, and since those symbols often have to appear on sometimes relatively small pieces of Mother Earth, that is important.
Nonetheless I think this text succeeds and I would reommend it to anyone with an interest in climate, climate systems, meteorology, atmospheric study or climate change. It is well worth searching out.
