Weather ReviewRichard Hell is well known throughout the music world as co-founder of not one but two of the most important bands of the 'punk' movement, Television and The Voidoids. His literary outpoint has been just as fascinating and I believe in time will find the audience it deserves. Weather, published by Hell's Cuz Editions, is simply put one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. Hell takes one main idea and reworks it in various forms throughtout this small volume. Outside of the obvious pleasure brought on by reading the work, I was struck by the feeling that I was in a way getting a very personal peak at the artist writing it. Reading this reminded me of my favorite film, Jacques Rivette's La Belle Noiseusse. It is a rare thing these days to read great poetry, it is an even rarer thing to experience it. Richard Hell has given us two gifts: the poem and the process.Weather OverviewWeather is a sublime, chilling, and hilarious twelve-poem-long set of variations on, or mutations departing from, one short lyrical text ["The weather was still exciting. The whole city seemed to optically snap with the cool brightness of the just-moist light and air ricocheting in pings and flapping planes from surface of stone to surface of stone around and through the teeming traffic flesh and pumped out metal fumes and fresh water widely below and entering the underlooked and overseeing sky."] The perfect cover art is by Christopher Wool (whose giant show that originated at the Museum of Contemporary Art, L.A., is now at the Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh).
