The All-Weather Friend's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease: Staying Connected to Loved Ones with Dementia and Their Caregivers ReviewHave you ever googled "what to say to a friend dealing with...?" I have turned to the giant search engine more than once for a starting point or just to see if my thoughts about a situation are anywhere near mainstream. I often get such a wide variety of suggestions that it becomes even harder to find my footing. Mary Cail has provided a wonderful, concise guide to anyone touched by Alzheimer's Disease. Her book is immensely thoughtful and can be read in its entireity in one sitting(or picked through for specific information). Although Dr. Cail takes the time to give some detailed medical information about the "hows" and "whys" of Alzheimer's, her book is more of a very human (and humane) guide on how to navigate the daunting reality of someone with this disease and someone caring for those afflicted. By giving real life examples of Alzheimer's cases, Dr. Cail allows her readers a glimpse into true endearing stories of love, compassion, fear, frustration and acceptance. Her book provides examples of what to say and do to ease the burden of tremendously burdened patients and caregivers. It is often much easier to turn away from our fellow human beings when they are thrust into the very scary circumstance of dealing with a disease that has no cure--one that robs us of the very essence of our being. It is even scary to think that each of us will probably have to face some aspect of Alzheimer's Disease at some point in our lives. The All-Weather Friend's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease gives you the knowledge and inspires the courage needed to best help a friend when he/she needs you the most. I am anxiously awaiting Dr. Cail's future All-Weather Friend's Guides. The All-Weather Friend's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease: Staying Connected to Loved Ones with Dementia and Their Caregivers OverviewThe All-Weather Friend's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease is an answer to the isolation many dementia patients and caregivers feel when friends and loved ones don't know how to help. In a clear, sympathetic voice, Dr. Mary Cail explains how to be an All-Weather Friend, instead of a fair-weather friend. A counselor, educator and dementia support group leader, Dr. Cail quickly shows how to make the most of your relationship with an AD patient or a caregiver from the beginning through the late stage.Meant to be read in one or two sittings, The All-Weather Friend's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease is not a caregiving manual, a collection of activities or a medical resource. It's a handbook of moving, true stories and straightforward advice on companionship and support. You'll learn step-by-step how to avoid the unintentional hurts and slights that can undermine friendship and add to the stress of an already difficult situation. Conversation guides give examples of what to say. A 'toolkit" of strategies suggests what to do. Whether your relationship is with a friend, relative, neighbor or colleague, you'll be ready to reach out with compassion and confidence.
