A Very Special Snowflake ReviewI read and adorable book called "A Very Special Snowflake" by Don Hoffman and illustrated by Todd Dakins. It's an adorable little story which is fun to read for young children. A Very Special Snowflake is about two children, Jeff and Veronica. They have the cutest little puppy name Snowflake. One day while playing out in the snow they lose their little puppy and spend the remainder of the book looking for him around town. They ask all the town's people that they come across if they have seen Snowflake but every time they ask someone if they have seen Snowflake the town's people think the kids are referring to the winter weather. Of course there is a happy ending because the children find their beloved little puppy. What I loved most about this book is that it reminds me of the "Where's Waldo" books from the 80's (gosh... I seem so old now!). Do you remember those books? There were "busy" pictures and you had to locate Waldo with his green hat, red and white striped shirt and glasses? A Very Special Snowflake reminds me of that kind of a book. You see Snowflake is white like snow (thus the reason for his name). Throughout the entire story Snowflake follows Veronica and Jeff around, you just have to look for him within the pictures. The book is geared towards children ages 4 to 8. That is the perfect age too because it would be a wee bit more challenging for them to locate Snowflake in the pictures then older kids. My kids were able to locate Snowflake almost immediately. I can see a younger child getting super excited when they are able to locate the adorable little Snowflake within each picture.
A Very Special Snowflake OverviewOn a snowy winter day, Jeff and Veronica take their new puppy out for a game of catch. But Snowflake soon disappears! Her white fur blends right into a mound of snow. The baker, the policewoman, the mail carrier, and other neighbors try to help, while Snowflake plays a game of hide-and-seek with the reader!
Children can search for Snowflake in each delightful illustration!

Snook Alone ReviewThis is it--this librarian's pick for the Caldecott Medal. This is not a book for really young children--it has lots of text, and the language is beautiful and poetic and challenging. The illustrations (especially of the dog Snook in motion, and close-ups of his face full of longing for his friend the monk) are breathtaking.Snook Alone Overview

Clifford's First Snow Day (Clifford 8x8) ReviewI bought the three Clifford books because someone had taken Clifford's Christmas from our school library. We also did not have the books about Clifford and snow and Clifford's kitten. These books are very popular with kindergarten and first graders, as well as some second graders, and are checked out each week. The children really enjoy them. I volunteer at Coyle Avenue School in Carmichael and the children in this school are in a transitional neighborhood, sometimes as many as 5 or 6 leaving the school in a week, so it was nice to find something they liked for such a reasonable price. Thank you.Clifford's First Snow Day (Clifford 8x8) OverviewJoin Clifford as he experiences the joys of seeing, and playing in, snow for the first time.

Houndsley and Catina and the Quiet Time ReviewHoundsley and Catina are a continuing set of characters. It's the first book I've read, so I can't say if one should read them in order or not. Houndsley, a dog, and Catina, a cat, appear to be roommates and best friends, although there may well be a romance or familial relation. It's the first snow of the winter, and Houndsley is thrilled. He loves to be snowed in an imagines their home to be like an island. Catina is not thrilled because she is very much looking forward to the concert tonight. She's been practicing for months. Slowly, Houndsley convinces her to join him on the island and think of all the fun things they can do without leaving home.
Houndsley and Catina are cute, and they both manage to have a mix of childlike and grown-up sensibilities. I appreciate that the story is mostly devoid of gendered behavior. Most importantly, Houndsley and Catina build snow creatures (rather than the ubiquitous snowmen)! I laughed out loud a few times, and it was an enjoyable book. It reminds me very much of the Frog and Toad books I loved when I was young. If Elephant and Piggie books are what your young, hip aunt buys for you, then Houndsley and Catina books are what your sweet grandmother buys for you. It was a nice book, but it does lack a little bit of the fun factor.
It is also a wonderful transition to chapter books. The pictures would not be out of place in a picture book. Marie-Louise Gay does a fantastic job illustrating. Houndsley and Catina would be a good choice for early chapter book readers and for reading aloud. It's divided into three chapters, but quick readers will finish it in one sitting.

Clifford And The Big Storm (Clifford 8x8) ReviewThis is a good classic Clifford book. My 2 1/2 year old knows it by heart. I could be little scary to children who are afraid of storms. Emily and her grandma have to go to a shelter - it might make kids worry too much over an oncoming storm.Clifford And The Big Storm (Clifford 8x8) OverviewThe most popular big, red, lovable dog that ever was! Clifford books have sold millions of copies in nearly half a century - and his series airing on PBS Kids TV has been enormously popular.
