A Very Special Snowflake ReviewI read and adorable book called "A Very Special Snowflake" by Don Hoffman and illustrated by Todd Dakins. It's an adorable little story which is fun to read for young children. A Very Special Snowflake is about two children, Jeff and Veronica. They have the cutest little puppy name Snowflake. One day while playing out in the snow they lose their little puppy and spend the remainder of the book looking for him around town. They ask all the town's people that they come across if they have seen Snowflake but every time they ask someone if they have seen Snowflake the town's people think the kids are referring to the winter weather. Of course there is a happy ending because the children find their beloved little puppy. What I loved most about this book is that it reminds me of the "Where's Waldo" books from the 80's (gosh... I seem so old now!). Do you remember those books? There were "busy" pictures and you had to locate Waldo with his green hat, red and white striped shirt and glasses? A Very Special Snowflake reminds me of that kind of a book. You see Snowflake is white like snow (thus the reason for his name). Throughout the entire story Snowflake follows Veronica and Jeff around, you just have to look for him within the pictures. The book is geared towards children ages 4 to 8. That is the perfect age too because it would be a wee bit more challenging for them to locate Snowflake in the pictures then older kids. My kids were able to locate Snowflake almost immediately. I can see a younger child getting super excited when they are able to locate the adorable little Snowflake within each picture.
A Very Special Snowflake OverviewOn a snowy winter day, Jeff and Veronica take their new puppy out for a game of catch. But Snowflake soon disappears! Her white fur blends right into a mound of snow. The baker, the policewoman, the mail carrier, and other neighbors try to help, while Snowflake plays a game of hide-and-seek with the reader!
Children can search for Snowflake in each delightful illustration!

Mama, Will It Snow Tonight ReviewThe mother fox lovingly looked down at her kit when he asked, "Mama, will it snow?" A bunny asked the same thing of his Mama as did a little girl. "No. No. No snow tonight," they answered. The season was changing and the colorful leaves began to leave their branches and fall to the ground and a chill began to set in. It's an exciting time when critters and little girls wait for the first snow, especially when weather signs point to the change.
"Mama, will it snow?
Mama, will it snow?
Mama, will it snow tonight?
The wind is brrrr.
The bushes bare.
The berries picked."
This was a beautiful, graceful book that captures the essence of the change of season from autumn to winter. The simple repetitive dialogue meshes perfectly with the watercolors. The artwork captures those subtle signs that snow will arrive soon, something that can be discussed with the young child. For example, "That night they all looked up at the hazy-lazy, fuzzy moon." On the following page you can see small snowflakes swirling in the moonlight. If you have a little one who loves to play outside and is awaiting the first arrival of snow, you'll love this gentle read!Mama, Will It Snow Tonight OverviewThe last leaves of autumn are falling. The wind is blowing and the bushes are bare. The earth is ready for winter, and so are three mothers - a fox, a hare, and a human - whose young ones anxiously await the first snow of winter. Each evening they ask their mothers the same question: "Mama, will it snow tonight?" The snow may not come this night, but soon, when the moon looks right, the mothers know the snow will fall.

Snow Day ReviewNothing thrills the heart of a child more than the prospect of a day home from school. So when the weatherman predicts an overnight snowfall, his words jump-start the imagination. What will we do tomorrow when we're snowed in? The mind reels at the possibilities! But as with many dreams devoutly to be wished, stark reality shows up with vastly different plans. This picture book confirms the fact that no matter how old you are, the term "snow day" just might be the most exciting and magical phrase in the English language.
Lester Laminack's story is "spot on." Adam Gustavson's colorful and realistic illustrations provide snapshots that lead readers into believing they know how the book will turn out. Gotcha! A great read-along for parents and children, and it's difficult to judge who might enjoy the story more.Snow Day OverviewWhen the television weatherman predicts a big snowfall, the narrator gleefully imagines the fun-filled possibilities of an unscheduled holiday from school.Piling under warm blankets. No snow! As the family members pile into the car so they won t be late for school, an unexpected twist reveals who wanted the snow day most of all.Adam Gustavson s expressive illustrations comically capture the excitement of pure possibility in author Lester Laminack s thoroughly original tale.

The Snowflake ReviewIt is hard to think of a natural phenomenon that has more intrinsic delight and fascination than a snowflake. Sure, the things pile up and please skiers and dismay drivers, but taken one by one, each snowflake is not only pretty, it has enough complexity and mystery about it to delight any careful observer. In _The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty_ (Voyageur Press), two careful observers have documented what intrigues them about snowflakes. Kenneth Libbrecht is head of the physics department of Caltech, and he not only rushes out with a magnifying glass when it snows, he grows snowflakes artificially in his lab. Patricia Rasmussen is a photographer who started taking pictures of snowflakes with her own equipment and then used Libbrecht's special apparatus. This is a book a little larger than a hundred pages, but the pictures are elegant, and the text tells the current explanations, as far as we now know them (there are still mysteries), of why snowflakes look the way they do.
The famous snowflake pictures of William Bentley inspired Rasmussen to start taking pictures of snow. Bentley's pictures are carefully reproduced white-on-black images, but Rasmussen has experimented with colored light to give multicolored pastels that shine on and through the hundreds of crystals depicted here. There are plenty of the six-armed variety, but also triangular snowflakes, and twelve, eighteen, or twenty-four armed ones, as well as tiny ice crystals shaped like needles, prisms, barrels, or bullets. can form at the right conditions. Different humidity and temperature produces the shapes. For the familiar snowflake, each arm experiences the same microclimate, so each changes in the same way. One arm of a flake thus does not "know" what the other arms are doing so it can turn itself out identically; they are all simply products of identical environmental history. As can be suspected, snowflakes that develop in the same regions have the same general design. But of course, everyone knows that no snowflakes are identical. Libbrecht considers whether this question is really true, and finds it cannot be answered without close considerations of "What is a snowflake?" and "What is identical?"
Snowflake science is here presented clearly and with good humor by someone who obviously loves his work. Libbrecht demonstrates that since a snowflake is a billion billion water molecules grabbed from the atmosphere, some of them are from your own exhalations. He does the calculations to show that about a thousand of the water molecules in every snowflake you see in this book (and of course, any other snowflake) come from you. "Thank you for your contribution," he says, "and keep up the good work." Jaunty and illuminating scientific descriptions, plus the most beautiful pictures of snowflakes ever made, make this a volume that can be valued for eye-catching brilliance or mind-engaging elucidation. The Snowflake Overview

Anna's Wish ReviewThere hadn't been snow in the town for many years and naturally Anna was so young she had never seen it. Every year people were getting out their shovels after the leaves fell to the ground during the fall season. Throughout the winter there was not trace of a single flake and when springtime rolled around and the "crocuses popped out of the ground," the shovels went back into hiding and people began to think of spring. Year after year, the little snowflakes never made their appearance and people began to forget about what it was like to experience snow.
Anna and her mother were walking in front of a bakery window when she "felt something very soft and cold touch her cheek, as light as a butterfly's kiss." People were cutting their Christmas trees and the town appeared to glow with the thought of the holiday season. A week later she felt that cold something on her face again. She asked her mother all about snow and was told the last time she saw the wondrous sight she was just a little girl. They went sledding, built snowmen and stuck out their tongues to catch the unique flakes. Anna dragged an old sled from the basement. "I wish . . . I wish . . . I wish . . . " Can you guess what little Anna wished for?
This is an endearing story with art work to match. Every year little children in the northern climates wait, watch and wish for the first snowfall of the year so they can go out and feel the magic of the season. Children living in more temperate climates who are planning a trip to see snow and are anticipating the venture will enjoy this book as well. All the little snow bunnies of the world will love this one!Anna's Wish Overview

When Winter Comes ReviewI picked up this book because I loved the illustrations and the author lives in Bucks Co., Pa (as do I). Well, my four year old son and I just loved it. And it made for good conversation after. The author addresses in such a nice, comfortable way what happens to flowers, fish, deer, birds and caterpillars in the winter. The illustrations are just beautiful and cozy. A wonderful winter book--or any time really. When Winter Comes Overview

Snow, Snow: Winter Poems for Children ReviewTEXT SUMMARY= Each short, rhyming poem about the accompanying snow picture is writen on either a one or two page spread with title and page number refering to the index.
VISUAL SUMMARY= Beautiful colour photographs capture the different moods of snow presented in different locations. The layout is varied with fullpage spreads, pictures watermarked in the background, mirrored pictures, and pictures offset from the edges.
CRITIQUE= This entire book-entity is a work of art, as the layouts vary to add variety to the mostly white images and black text and the pictures so perfectly express the picture they are pared with. This sense of unity can be attributed to the fact that unlike most picture books, the Stemple's photographs came before the text. The poems were only produced after he had given the photographs to his mother, Jane Yolen, who was then directly inspired by them. The short poems would most likely hold a child's attention with their humour and amusing rhymes.Snow, Snow: Winter Poems for Children Overview

The Little Book of Snowflakes Review"The Little Book of Snowflakes" by Kenneth Libbrecht is a diminutive companion of sorts to the larger "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty", which Libbrecht wrote with Patricia Rasmussen. It contains 140 beautiful photographs of snow crystals and snowflakes, taken by Kenneth Libbrecht and his traveling photomicroscope. 45 of the photographs are full page, which in this case means 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) square. I'm not sure if any of the photographs duplicate those found in "Winter's Secret Beauty", but most of them don't. If you haven't seen either of these books, the photographs are so beautiful that they must be seen to be believed. The text in "The Little Book of Snowflakes" is sparse. It consists of basic information from the author on how snowflakes are formed and 30 quotations on the subjects of snow and nature by an assortment of notable names, from Aristotle to Hsiao Tung to William Blake to Albert Einstein to Yogi Berra. As with it's companion book, the price of "The Little Book of Snowflakes' belies the quality of its contents. It makes a wonderful gift for the photographer, nature lover, aesthete -or anyone who has had too much or too little of the white stuff outside. Kenneth Libbrecht puts snow in a new light. For those who couldn't get enough of the photographs in "Winter's Secret Beauty", this little book is a welcome addition.
Kenneth Libbrecht is a physics professor at CalTech, and he has an excellent web site: www.snowcrystals.com . Whatever else Libbrecht may accomplish in his field, the publication of "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty" and "The Little Book of Snowflakes" seem to ensure his place in popular history as a "snowflake man", an epithet previously earned only by Wilson Bentley a century ago. If you like this book, be sure to check out "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty" for more photographs and detailed information about the formation and identification of snow crystals. The Little Book of Snowflakes OverviewFollowing the success of "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty", this companion gift book features new, super-detailed photographs of snowflakes, detailed captions containing the science behind their beauty, and literary quotes relating to snow and nature.

Snowballs ReviewI'm a speech therapist with a prekindergarten at risk program. After reading this book with the children we made our own "snowballs" book. I've never seen 3 and 4 year olds maintain their attention to an activity for so long. We made our own snowmen with three large white circles, put them on the floor and the children could choose any items from our classroonm to make any kind of snowmen they could think of. We then photographed them with their snowmen and put the photos into a book. They were unbelievably creative. Since the activity did not require cutting and glueing it was easy for the children to manipulate and change things as their snowmen "came to life". Some of them used ideas from the book and "modified" a little. The language they expressed while creating was unbelievable! This book is such an excellent resource and motivation for parents in using those "junk" items around the house to help children be creative, and to encourage a natural relaxed way to enhance language development. The book is very engaging for young children. The language is short and simple and the pictures bright and interesting. I liked it so much I ordered one for my niece.Snowballs Overview

Under the Snow ReviewA week ago I woke up to a snow-covered yard. When, I opened the front door, my younger son pelted me with a snowball. By 9:00, the sun had melted the snow, but it still reminded me that soon everything will be UNDER THE SNOW. So if you have a curious child who wonders what's happening under the snow in a field, or under the snow in a forest, or under the snow on a pond, or under the snow in a wetland, be sure to check out this book. The lyrical text and lovely watercolors invite you to snuggle under a blanket and celebrate the natural wonders of the coldest season of the year.Under the Snow Overview
