I Wonder Why the Wind Blows: And Other Questions About Our Planet ReviewThis book is very useful for children who ask a lot of earth science questions. In fact the whole series of these books is quite nice. I've used them successfully with preschoolers through elementary school age children. The books are not designed as "sit down at group time and read to the class," but in small groups or one-on-one, they work very well.I Wonder Why the Wind Blows: And Other Questions About Our Planet OverviewI Wonder Why the Wind Blows answers all sorts of tricky and fascinating questions about Planet Earth, such as "How cold is snow?", "How hot are deserts?", and "Where do rivers end?"

The Art of the Snowflake: A Photographic Album ReviewThis contemporary assemblage is an artwork of Love by Libbrecht, author of three prior books on snowflakes. He is Physics Professor at Caltech and provides eye-catching color photo-illustrations of over 400 snowflakes, many as full page images, all sharply detailed and on blue or crimson colored backgrounds, often illuminated by diverse light sources and spectra to best define architectural details of these tiny wondrous crystals forming from water vapor at freezing temperatures. It comes not as a surprize to learn he was from North Dakota.
In addition to snowflakes, the author describes associated particles called rime which may agglomerate into graupel or soft hail. The typical snowflake is a stellar snow crystal composed of a thin plate of ice with six (hexagonal) primary arms that regularly have sidebranches called stellar dendrites, hence appearing fern- or tree-like with no two identical (like fingerprints in Man). Infrequently, the flakes appear as six sectored plates sans dendrites whilst warmer temperatures may produce ice columns and/or needles, generally hexagonal, or appearing as peculiar capped columns with hexagonal wheels resembling tiny spools.
As a photographer, I would have liked the author to have included a brief synopsis of the equipment and technique he used to garner these photographs - i,e, the type of microscopic lens, magnifications needed, light sources, type of camera and film used (digital vs silver halide). However, this book is on the Art of the Snowflake, and not a how-to book. The author indicates some digital editing was done to remove minor blemishes, etc., and based on the huge number of photos taken I'd conclude digital camera and sensor was used. This book is an informative read, is great stock for the coffee table, and is perhaps an inviting holiday seasonal gift this Winter. The Art of the Snowflake: A Photographic Album OverviewThe perfect geometry and exquisite beauty of nature is nowhere so clear to us as in the snowflake. But how have we been able to appreciate this infinitesimal wonder in all its crystalline glory? This book, as much a work of art as a testament to science, reveals how one of the snowflake's most inspired photographers came to such intimate knowledge of his craft and its fleeting focus. Beautiful pictures illustrate Kenneth Libbrecht's story of the microphotography of snow crystals, from the pioneering work of Wilson Bentley in the 1890s right up to Ken's own innovations in our age of digital images. A breathtaking look at the works of art that melt in an instant, this is a book to page through and savor, season after season.

Snowballs ReviewI'm a speech therapist with a prekindergarten at risk program. After reading this book with the children we made our own "snowballs" book. I've never seen 3 and 4 year olds maintain their attention to an activity for so long. We made our own snowmen with three large white circles, put them on the floor and the children could choose any items from our classroonm to make any kind of snowmen they could think of. We then photographed them with their snowmen and put the photos into a book. They were unbelievably creative. Since the activity did not require cutting and glueing it was easy for the children to manipulate and change things as their snowmen "came to life". Some of them used ideas from the book and "modified" a little. The language they expressed while creating was unbelievable! This book is such an excellent resource and motivation for parents in using those "junk" items around the house to help children be creative, and to encourage a natural relaxed way to enhance language development. The book is very engaging for young children. The language is short and simple and the pictures bright and interesting. I liked it so much I ordered one for my niece.Snowballs Overview

Stormy Weather Review"Stormy Weather" is a beautiful illustrated children's bedtime rhyming storybook, about a mother fox and her child kit who is getting sleepy but needs a reassuring bedtime story to drift off. In a world of "frogs and kings and gingerbread," in many beds, "a million bedtime stories" are read. The wonderful multidirectional illustrations take the sleepy child to far and exotic places where other mothers are putting their beloved children to sleep and protecting them from danger or harm from storms, thunder, wind, rain, or snow. "Stormy Weather" ends with a lovely starry sky shining down on mother and child foxes, saying "Sweet dreams beneath our sheltering sky, the tides and winds our lullaby, the stars our light, the whole night through/shine down so bright on me and you." "Stormy Weather" is perfect bedtime reading for children ages 2 and up.

On the Same Day in March: A Tour of the World's Weather ReviewThis is a good book to cover geographical effects of seasons with young children but could have been much better had the author chosen a day in winter/summer rather than spring/fall. Also, some of the slang to specific regions (eg. willy-willies in Australian section) should have been defined. Overall though, it was a useful education book and the kids enjoyed the perky text and lively illustrations. On the Same Day in March: A Tour of the World's Weather Overview

Thanks so much.Wild Weather Soup (Early Reading S.) OverviewIn this early reading book, Winifred Weathervane takes a well-earned break from making the weather, with hilarious consequences. What Will the Weather Be (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) ReviewThis is another great book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science series. Younger children (like my son who was age 4 when we first began with this book) and older children (who are reading on their own) will be delighted and educated with this book. Whimsical illustrations demonstrate complex scientific information in a very approachable manner.
In this book children will learn overarching concepts of meteorolgy and actual scientific terminology in a progressive manner. Children will learn about:
1. Fronts (Cold and Warm) and their affect on weather.
2. How air pressure is determined and what happens in Low Pressure vs. High Pressure. They learn about barometers.
3. Wind speed and direction, including names of instruments (wind vane and anemometer).
The colorful illustrations and simple diagrams reinforce the infomration contained in the book and help children understand the basic concepts of a weather formation.
Diagrams include:
1. Fronts & Front Formations
2. Water Vapor
3. Weather Maps
4. High & Low Pressure Systems
This book is an excellent addition to your science library. Perfect for budding scientists...or to generate a budding scientist by feeding their minds with sound teaching about the world around us rather than empty stories. What Will the Weather Be (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) OverviewWeather
Will it be warm or cold? Should we wear shorts or pants? Shoes or boots? Read and find out why the weather is so difficult to predict.

Oh Say Can You Say What's the Weather Today: All About Weather (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library) ReviewI think this is one of the best of the books in Cat in the Hat's Learning Library. In this book, the rhymes are crisp and interesting. Some of the concepts introduced/covered include: meteorologists, weather maps, clouds, evaporation, condensation, snow, rain, thunder, lightning, tornadoes, and climatology. This book covers a lot in the simple and effective Cat in the Hat style.Oh Say Can You Say What's the Weather Today: All About Weather (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library) OverviewThe Cat and company travel by hot air balloon up and into various weather phenomena including rain, snow, thunder, tornadoes, and (yikes!) even hurricanes! Along the way they learn about thermometers, anemometers, wind vanes, cloud formations, humidity, fog, smog, weather folklore, and how to stay safe in lightning. Written and illustrated in Seussian style, this a great addition to the Cat in the Hat's Learning Library!
