Tornado (Trophy Chapter Book) ReviewGreat story, with great illustrations. This book held the attention of my 8yo active son, and he enjoyed reading it. The illustrations make you feel as if you are actually touching the dog. What made it even better was that we own a black lab, identical to the one drawn in the book, and our lab came from the local pound. I got this book around summer soltice when my sun did not understand why he is going to bed when it is so bright outside. The Magic School Bus Kicks Up A Storm: A Book About Weather ReviewMy 4 year old son fell in love with the earlier books in this series - Hurricane, Ocean Floor, Electricity, Human body, Water Works, Bees. They are rich in detail, and are very engaging for young exploring minds. This one (MSB Kicks Up a Storm) pales by comparison. Not nearly as much detail. Lacks the quality of illustrations and side-commentary that make the earlier ones so special. This is a run-of-the-mill kids book with nothing much to distinguish it. I have read elsewhere that this series took a downturn when it became a TV show. It certainly reads like a comic-book version of a TV show. Take my son's advice - stick with the earlier books in the Magic School Bus series.The Magic School Bus Kicks Up A Storm: A Book About Weather OverviewA book about weather, from the animated television series on the Learning Channel.

Younger children (like my son who was age 4 when we first began with this book) and older children (who are reading on their own) will be delighted and educated with this book. Whimsical illustrations demonstrate complex scientific information in a very approachable manner.
In this book children will learn overarching concepts of meteorolgy and actual scientific terminology in a progressive manner. Children will learn about:
1. Fronts (Cold and Warm) and their affect on weather.
2. How air pressure is determined and what happens in Low Pressure vs. High Pressure. They learn about barometers.
3. Wind speed and direction, including names of instruments (wind vane and anemometer).
The colorful illustrations and simple diagrams reinforce the infomration contained in the book and help children understand the basic concepts of a weather formation.
Diagrams include:
1. Fronts & Front Formations
2. Water Vapor
3. Weather Maps
4. High & Low Pressure Systems
