A Very Special Snowflake ReviewI read and adorable book called "A Very Special Snowflake" by Don Hoffman and illustrated by Todd Dakins. It's an adorable little story which is fun to read for young children. A Very Special Snowflake is about two children, Jeff and Veronica. They have the cutest little puppy name Snowflake. One day while playing out in the snow they lose their little puppy and spend the remainder of the book looking for him around town. They ask all the town's people that they come across if they have seen Snowflake but every time they ask someone if they have seen Snowflake the town's people think the kids are referring to the winter weather. Of course there is a happy ending because the children find their beloved little puppy. What I loved most about this book is that it reminds me of the "Where's Waldo" books from the 80's (gosh... I seem so old now!). Do you remember those books? There were "busy" pictures and you had to locate Waldo with his green hat, red and white striped shirt and glasses? A Very Special Snowflake reminds me of that kind of a book. You see Snowflake is white like snow (thus the reason for his name). Throughout the entire story Snowflake follows Veronica and Jeff around, you just have to look for him within the pictures. The book is geared towards children ages 4 to 8. That is the perfect age too because it would be a wee bit more challenging for them to locate Snowflake in the pictures then older kids. My kids were able to locate Snowflake almost immediately. I can see a younger child getting super excited when they are able to locate the adorable little Snowflake within each picture.
A Very Special Snowflake OverviewOn a snowy winter day, Jeff and Veronica take their new puppy out for a game of catch. But Snowflake soon disappears! Her white fur blends right into a mound of snow. The baker, the policewoman, the mail carrier, and other neighbors try to help, while Snowflake plays a game of hide-and-seek with the reader!
Children can search for Snowflake in each delightful illustration!

Mama, Will It Snow Tonight ReviewThe mother fox lovingly looked down at her kit when he asked, "Mama, will it snow?" A bunny asked the same thing of his Mama as did a little girl. "No. No. No snow tonight," they answered. The season was changing and the colorful leaves began to leave their branches and fall to the ground and a chill began to set in. It's an exciting time when critters and little girls wait for the first snow, especially when weather signs point to the change.
"Mama, will it snow?
Mama, will it snow?
Mama, will it snow tonight?
The wind is brrrr.
The bushes bare.
The berries picked."
This was a beautiful, graceful book that captures the essence of the change of season from autumn to winter. The simple repetitive dialogue meshes perfectly with the watercolors. The artwork captures those subtle signs that snow will arrive soon, something that can be discussed with the young child. For example, "That night they all looked up at the hazy-lazy, fuzzy moon." On the following page you can see small snowflakes swirling in the moonlight. If you have a little one who loves to play outside and is awaiting the first arrival of snow, you'll love this gentle read!Mama, Will It Snow Tonight OverviewThe last leaves of autumn are falling. The wind is blowing and the bushes are bare. The earth is ready for winter, and so are three mothers - a fox, a hare, and a human - whose young ones anxiously await the first snow of winter. Each evening they ask their mothers the same question: "Mama, will it snow tonight?" The snow may not come this night, but soon, when the moon looks right, the mothers know the snow will fall.

A Place Where Hurricanes Happen ReviewThis is the story of four friends, Adrienne, Keesha, Micheal and Tommy, who live on the same New Orleans street.
I thought the first picture book that dealt with hurricane Katrina would focus on the hurricane. I am glad I was wrong, I like this much better.
The reader gets to know the four friends and their community before Katrina . The connection will stay long after the hurricane is gone, as the friends and their community are coming back together.
Waston's free verse is beautiful she makes the four friends as real as they can be. Strickland helps to bring the friends, the storm and New Orleans alive with her illustrations. Watson and Strickland have come together to create a lovely picture book.
Michael
Cars are turned upside down
and the street sign is floating in the water
Daddy tells us to get to the attic
as fast as we can
I take Jasmine's hand and I hold it tight.
like big brothers do.
She's too scared to look out the window
but I'm not
I look out the window
and I see the whole block swimming in water
Furniture, clothes and toys are swirling in the flood
Roofs are crumbling and windows are shattering
Big winds have come and trees are breaking
And all I can see is more water rising
So I look away and I squeeze Jasmine's hand
real tight because now I am scared too.
I probably should not have shared the whole verse, (but I love it) I also know the text without the illustrations is only half the story. You definitely want to see whole picture, its gorgeous and filled with emotion. This is one of those picture books, that I appreciate more each time I look at it. And I can't stop looking.

One Day in the Desert (Trophy Chapter Book) ReviewNaturalist Jean Craighead George introduces us to the world of the mountain lion, the road runner, the cactus, the kangaroo rat, the ringtailed cat, the swift fox, the elf owl, the coyote, and the bombadier beetle in this book as she did wolves and caribou in JULIE OF THE WOLVES and peregrine falcons in MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. A young Papago Indian girl named Bird Wing and her mother live in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. This usually arid place is about to fall victim to a terrible thunderstorm and a flash flood. Bird Wing and all the animals of the desert struggle to find shelter before the flood. Some will survive--and some will not. This is a beautiful story about the close connection between human beings and all living things, and the unpredictable ways of nature. Other books in the ONE DAY series that include exciting natural disasters are ONE DAY IN THE ALPINE TUNDRA and ONE DAY IN THE PRAIRIE. There is also the fascinating ONE DAY IN THE WOODS and ONE DAY IN THE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST. And don't forget Jean Craighead George's 80+ stories about nature, like The Thirteen Moons series and THERE'S AN OWL IN THE SHOWER.One Day in the Desert (Trophy Chapter Book) Overview‘A wounded mountain lion moves from his mountain habitat to a Papago Indian hut in Arizona's Sonoran desert during a record-breaking July day. All creation adapts to the blistering heat until a cloudburst causes a flash flood. With a measured yet vivid style, this introduction to desert ecology makes a memorable impact." -SLJ.

Tornado (Trophy Chapter Book) ReviewGreat story, with great illustrations. This book held the attention of my 8yo active son, and he enjoyed reading it. The illustrations make you feel as if you are actually touching the dog. What made it even better was that we own a black lab, identical to the one drawn in the book, and our lab came from the local pound. Hit home!Tornado (Trophy Chapter Book) OverviewA tornado appears in the distance, and Pete, the farmhand, gathers everyone into the storm cellar. While they wait for the storm to pass,he tells the family about the dog dropped down by a tornado when Pete was a boy. Named Tornado, Pete′s pet was no ordinary dog -- he played card tricks, saved a turtle′s life, and had a rivalry with the family cat. By the time Pete tells all of Tornado′s lively stories, the storm has passed, and another family has been entertained by this very special dog.

Like a Windy Day ReviewThe illustrations are charming. The verses are poetical. I'd have given it five stars except for the gratuitous and prominent inclusion of a bra on the laundry-line page. Some little boys might react with low-culture body-part laughter (the same way they might laugh at the word "butt") and in innocent others, the undergarment might inspire a curiosity that was otherwise dormant. For me as a parent, neither response is to be encouraged in a book about a windy day.Like a Windy Day Overview

Red Weather: A Novel ReviewWe Latvians are a small nation, but oh, we are a proud people! We are a nation beaten and battered by many wars over many hundreds, even thousands of years, but our culture and life sense still thrive: the Latvian language is one of the oldest in existence today, still actively used. Perhaps that is our greatest source of pride, then: we are survivors.
When Pauls Toutonghi's new novel, Red Weather, came upon the literary scene, I was greatly pleased. I've been an avid reader in both languages - Latvian and English - since earliest childhood, but however many good books I read about the war and later experiences of Latvians immigrating to other countries and cultures, it was rare to come across a worthy tome in English. History books, yes, but far more rare, a good attention-grabbing novel that I could proudly share with non-Latvian friends.
Now, here's Pauls. With one Latvian parent, it is my understanding he has grown up in the Milwaukee area, active in the Latvian community and, having visited Latvia, is well-acquainted, one would suppose, with the culture and something of the nation's history. For these reasons, I read the novel with high expectation and excitement.
Pauls' writing abilities do not disappoint. Still quite young, he has already accrued an impressive publishing history, and has won the Pushcart Prize. His descriptions are lively, his storyline pulls us along, his sense of humor is intact.
And yet. The further I read, the more I realized, no, this was not going to be the book that I would pass on to Latvians I know, or to non-Latvians I'd like to invite a little more intimately into my multi-cultural world. The novel works as an entertaining read for non-Latvians, perhaps, but for those who do know the history and culture, well, not so much. I think my sense of humor is healthy, but I can't help feeling, for instance, that describing Latvians visiting the United States as being so dense as to put ketchup on every possible food, even bananas, craving to taste the American life, is taking the joke into the much less fun realm of ridicule. Or the Latvian mother as so eye-rollingly lacking in self-awareness as to walk Milwaukee streets wearing a Pabst hardhat with a beer can on it as if she were wearing a Parisian fashion statement. Surely not. I cringed in embarrassment. Humor is often built on slapstick and exaggeration, but would those who have no other knowledge of Latvians, perhaps never will have any other exposure than this novel, think this is what it means to be a Latvian? Bumbling fools?
Perhaps even more worthy of remark are some historic inaccuracies. Although this is a fictional work, even fiction must keep its feet firmly on factually solid ground before branching into fantasy. One such example is the allusion to Latvia's president, Karlis Ulmanis, and his attempt to escape to Finland during the Soviet invasion of World War II (see page 166). In fact, President Ulmanis held his place, broadcasting over the radio waves to the nation even as the Soviet tanks crossed the Russian border, keeping down the panic and requesting all to remain in their places, thus saving many Latvian lives. He was taken by force from his office by the occupying army, and was never seen alive again. Educated guesses are that he was deported to Siberia, where he died in a Gulag (concentration camp), but his body has never been found.
Having finished the novel, wondering at how very different the author's experience of his Latvian roots and culture were from mine, indeed from anyone I have known with Latvian roots and having gone through the immigrant experience, I wanted to think - hey, there's always the exception to the rule. If by 1989, when this story is set, any Latvian immigrant I or my family knew had established themselves in relative financial security (the fictional Balodis family still lived in squalor), had attained some measure of their new country's education and achieved something of their own immigrant American dream, then the Balodis family was certainly a lone exception to the rule. Nor could I imagine my own father, or fathers of my friends, being so easygoing about the political lines the young man in this novel, Yuri (Juris), crossed in his lovelorn relationship with a socialist girl (my own, and dare I say any typical, Latvian father, would have gone through the roof, to put it very, very lightly).
As a reality check, I shared Red Weather with my parents, who shared it with several of their friends. Their reactions were the same. They expressed admiration for the author's skill, but also expressed a pained disappointment in the skewed image of Latvian immigrants to the U.S. The image the book leaves is of a people who are gullible, not particularly industrious, and rather dim-witted.
An opportunity lost. My subjective opinion, but I'm sure shared by more than a few of my countrymen and women.Red Weather: A Novel Overview

Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather ReviewA satire on the commercialization of holidays, our obsession with celebrity, and the media's tendency to make natural things seem unnatural, "Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather" is also a cleverly written and funny book about the secrets of Ground Hog Day. I like how author/illustrator Bruce Koscielniak bypasses a lengthy explanation of that whole things about how groundhog seeing it's shadow (or not) predicts whether we're in for more winter or a quick transition to Spring. Mrs. Goundhog, reading to Geoffrey in their cozy underground living room (with a whimsical wooden-planks-on-a-pole ladder to the side) FROM "Groundhog Lore," simply states: "If you see your shadow on Groundhog Day, go back to sleep, because winter will last six more weeks. Of there is no shadow, spring will soon be here."
Geoffrey doesn't see his shadow, and tells this to Merton Moose, who sensationalizes the brief event into front page news. I wish that Bruce Koscielniak had drawn Moose as a wizened and jaded reporter, so of the Walter Matthau of moose. Geoffrey's success, and Moose's publicity results in a media event the next February. There are television cameras, lots and lots of unrelated Groundhog's Day sales and promos (e.g., a billboard for "Big Tooth toothpaste, showing Geoffrey brushing his... big tooth; the "Uptown Cuisine Restaurant" sporting a banner, "Geoffrey ate here"). The mania even gets to Geoffrey, who shows up wearing a Hollywood-ish scarf and shades.
Unfortunately, when Geoffrey hurries to the ground for his prediction, there are so many cameras and people that, "I could hardly see the ground of me, much less my own shadow!"--and he has more than a shadow of a doubt about the upcoming season. Even this "failure" gets prominent newspaper and TV coverage. The consequences are humorously exaggerated; in fact, there's so much confusion that "all weather reports were canceled" until Geoffrey makes up his mind about what he saw. Fortunately, weather forecasting is in the family, and Geoffrey's off the hook thanks to Mom.
The conclusion's a bit flat, though perhaps appropriate for bedtime, Geoffrey, tired from all that forecasting, goes to bed. Koscielniak succeeds at both the children and adult levels, writing a book with multi-layered appeal. I like books like this, because it means that adults won't tire of reading it over (and over) to kids. The illustrations and fanciful narrative tone are very similar to James Marshall's (of the "Worst" series, and the "Wainy" series): Casually drawn lettering, heavy use of "sketchy" lines, faces full of expression, and a light watercolor touch. Highly recommended.Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather Overview

Yesterday's Weather: Stories Review"Yesterday's Weather" collects a couple of decades' worth of short stories, arranged in reverse chronological order. The later stories are much like the earlier ones, though on average slightly more polished. Anne Enright's talent is for short stories rather than novels, and among short stories for the extended prose poem rather than the novella; the stories in this book are infinitely more satisfying than her ill-conceived (though locally brilliant) novel "The Gathering," and many of the best -- like the first one, "Until the Girl Died" -- are just a few pages. This is emphatically not a book to read through; Enright is a great master in a single key -- domestic dissatisfaction intermitted by moments of surprising tenderness -- but her stories are not notable for their variety of subject matter. (Bad sex is for her what daffodils were for Wordsworth.)
The prose is usually excellent, and often beyond praise. There are a few lapses when Enright steps out of her comfort zone -- narrating a story in a teenage girl's voice, say; the "likes" aren't in, like, the right places -- but these are quite rare. What I find most appealing about her voice is its combination of poise with violent freshness. The descriptions are often poetry, e.g. a man "setting [his baby] down on its stomach to swim its way across the carpet." And then there's the perfect fingering: "The sex, when it happened, an aimless battering around the nub of him, which was sadly distant and, she supposed, numb with drink." (From a story titled "The Bad Sex Weekend," which as the NYT reviewer said would fit the entire book.) Apart from these stylistic virtues, I find the sensibility behind these stories fascinatingly edgy. The subject matter goes beautifully with the sensibility; it is very valuable to have the tawdry sanctities of marriage, childbirth, and mothering cut open by such a sharp and unflinching writer.Yesterday's Weather: Stories Overview

Strange as This Weather Has Been: A Novel ReviewThis is a delicately told story of a working class family and their very real struggle between making a living and the destruction of the land they love. This novel stirred me on so many levels: the personal stories of working class people, the stories of how families cope, the environmental and economic conflicts related to the practice of mountain top removal. Long after I finished reading this book, I still find myself thinking about aspects of the novel. Pancake's prose is honest, spare, and unsentimental. I recommend this book.Strange as This Weather Has Been: A Novel Overview

Stormy Weather ReviewIf you believe that there's a little good in everyone, then Stormy Weather and Carl Hiaasen are not for you.
Stormy Weather is classic Hiaasen. His writing is so sarcastic and unrestrained by reality that it reminds me a little of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or Neil Stevenson (Snow Crash). Interestingly, these are science fiction authors and Hiaasen doesn't write science fiction, but, like these science fiction writers, Hiaasen's writing is modern and clever and his imagination knows no limits. His books are parodies of human nature, especially greed and stupidity, sort of like Voltaire's Candide. After painting such surreal pictures of a cast of very selfish characters, often criminals, Hiaasen then draws upon some Dante as he assigns the characters to their inevitable and well-earned unique circles of hell (that's usually in Florida involving water, alligators, or at least a storm). It says something about a writer when his best known hero is a one-eyed crazy man who lives in the everglades but used to be the governor of the great state of Florida.
If you like the sarcastic social comedy of George Carlin, the ironic wit of Steven Wright, and the slapstick of Peter Sellers, then you will love Carol Hiaasen's Stormy Weather. If you find Carlin offensive, Wright unfunny, and Sellers overrated, then you're going to hate Carol Hiaasen.
If you're new to Hiaasen's books, Stormy Weather is a good place to start. My favorite Hiaasen books are: Strip Tease, 1993; Stormy Weather, 1995; Lucky You, 1997; Sick Puppy, 2000; and Skinny Dip, 2004.

Excite her just a little. She'd traveled the world, and though she'd always had her lens zoomed in on animals, she'd kept an eye out for Mr. Right. Or Mr. Hot-n-Sexy. She'd never come across a man so worthy of being photographed. A man so gorgeous he could steal her breath. One who had an animal magnetism that was usually reserved for movie stars.Until now.And there were two of them, she thought, feeling rather dreamy despite the fact that she was sinking into the mud.“Right," Jules murmured, drawing her attention back to him. “Strawberry blonde. I love strawberries, don't you André?"His tone was so seductive, so husky, Angelica's insides melted. Her hardened nipples brushed against his chest, and she knew she should back away from him. Get as far away from these men as she could.“Mmm, hmm."“So juicy. And sweet," Jules whispered in her ear. A little thrill raced through her as his breath warm caressed her wet skin. When he straightened and actually licked his lips, she was sure he was going to kiss her.Angelica found strength she didn't know she had and took a step back. Self-preservation. She had to get out of this swamp. Away from William. No matter how seductive these men were. Her back hit something strong and solid. Not a tree. André.Large hands clamped over her hips, and a squeak of alarm escaped her lips.“What's wrong, chérie?" Jules stepped toward her, his hands capturing hers. He breathed on them, letting his hot breath chase away the chill.“No-nothing." She shook her head. When he looked up at her through those long, black eyelashes, Angelica realized she was a goner. They'd completely and utterly seduced her with their heated looks, sexy accent, and tender touch. “Is William still in town?" she found herself asking.Jules tensed for just a second before he shrugged those strong shoulders. “Dunno."“Does it matter?" André asked.“He's a dangerous man." Her voice shook more than she wanted.Jules' jaw worked back and forth, and his hazel eyes darkened to match the stormy sky. “Don't worry, chérie. We'll protect you."
