Finn Throws a Fit Review
Peaches are really pretty good . . . most of the time. You can sit in your little green chair with a smile on your face, swing your little feet tucked into those oversized yellow boots and just feel that fuzzy peach in your hand. Life is good. BUT on some days you just want to sit in your little green chair, wrap yourself up in your blankie, snuggle it up under your nose and when Mommy offers you that fuzzy peach all sliced up . . . BOOM! That is when little boys named Finn are cranky and "anything could happen." Daddy tries to play ball with him, but even the Jack-in-the-box goes BOING when the thunder and lightning (crash, boom, bang!) erupt over Finn's head. Look out! The little tornado is on the run! Life is not good.
Things rock. They roll. Finn slams the door in his nursery shutting out Mommy and Daddy. The little yellow boots go flying when Daddy brings him into the kitchen. The lightning makes everyone grimace. Did you ever hear such noise coming out of such a little boy? He's rocking, rolling and tumbling from here to there. He cries so much that the house begins to flood and Mommy has to stand on a table to escape the rising water, but the puppy dog simply paddles his way through the horror. "He screams. Look out! Avalanche! He kicks. An earthquake shakes the world." Will the little house survive the terrifying ordeal it has to go through when "FINN THROWS A FIT?"
This is a hilarious little story that every parent can relate to. I laughed and giggled and recalled a few choice memories with each page. Tantruming toddlers are a fact of life and adorable little Finn with his little blankie and little yellow boots will charm your socks off, even when he's rocking and rolling through the entire house. The lively appealing art work adds just the right touch to this zany, but realistic story. I personally think every grandparent should buy a copy of this and give it to their children in thanks for all the (crash, boom, bang!) memories. A World Turned Over : A Killer Tornado and the Lives It Changed Forever ReviewI would like to make two comments about this book. Most important, it is powerful, beautiful, and interesting, and is a great example of literary reporting, as well as memoir.
My second comment is to express my anger at the amazingly ill-informed and inaccurate comments made by "a reader from Arlington, Virginia," who saw fit to give the lowest rating possible to a book that, by all appearances, he or she has not even read. The comment that it is "poorly researched" could not be further from the truth, and his condescending suggestion that the author should have made use of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History makes him look like a fool, since that institution was cited as a source of information, as was the Eudora Welty Library. The reviewer is right that the town of "Byram" is not spelled correctly, though his argument is rather deflated in light of the fact that he cannot correctly spell the word "rectified" himself. There are many Jackson natives that would take issue with his assertion that there is not a single live oak tree in Jackson. One of the most amazingly ignorant "criticisms" is that "there were very few eyewitness interviews in the book"-----There were more than twenty. Even more outrageous is the claim that there is "very little on the impact the event had upon the community of South Jackson." (sic)
In reality, this impact is the subject of the ENTIRE BOOK.
It's unfortunate that this person's careless reading was translated into a review. Listen instead to The New York Times, which praised A World Turned Over and called it "lush" and "evocative."A World Turned Over : A Killer Tornado and the Lives It Changed Forever Overview

Willow and the Snow Day Dance ReviewHmmm...could the reviewers, 'Michael' and 'Fiona' be one and the same? Both are one star reviews with very similar criticism, written in similar voice and each unhappy with the name of the book and offering alternative title suggestions. One suggests that there is no value in the book and the other suggests that there are no lessons to be learned.
My kids and I actually found terrific lessons that are perfect for families and classrooms. The book begins in the fall with the kids of this neighborhood avoiding the house where Mr Larch lives. Mr. Larch, for whatever reason, doesn't reach out to his neighbors and actually posts NO TRESPASSING signs on the steep hill behind his house. You could, as both of these "two" reviewers choose to do, assume that he is a victim bearing no responsibility for his personal actions, and suggest that he is an "agoraphobic cripple" and or has a "crippling disease". Seems to me if he can climb up to the top of that hill to hammer all those signs in the ground, he can't be much of a "cripple." Another possibility could be that Mr. Larch is just making a personal choice to be the neighborhood grouch and yell at all the kids to get off his lawn. It happens. Most of us have experienced THAT person sometime in our childhood!
In the early spring, Willow moves into this neighborhood. And in typical "Willow" style, she is undaunted by anyone's bad attitude. She reaches out to Mr. Larch, inviting him into her world where charity begins at home and castaway junk becomes garden art. She has the courage to ask for help and in return she gets the entire neighborhood involved in her many projects. When she asks for help in how to make a snow day happen, Mr. Larch's heart has been warmed, and he decides to come through in a big way! The neighborhood will never be the same!
What good lessons! What a cute book!Willow and the Snow Day Dance OverviewMr. Larch is not a very neighborly neighbor. He never has any visitors. His gray, gloomy house never has any decorations. He avoids everyone and everyone avoids him.But now Mr. Larch has a new neighbor. The Part Time People ReviewThis is a very odd short story that doesn't evoke much emotion beyond mild curiosity and confusion. The characters were peculiar and often inconsistent. You never truly understand any of them. The plot just seemed a little too obscure to grasp. I have no idea what the author was trying to say. I felt as if I just spent an hour aimlessly wandering around a stationery store without ever seeing anything interesting.The Part Time People OverviewDeBarrie's Stationery Store needed help again. The Sisters Club: Cloudy with a Chance of Boys ReviewIf I had to limit my review to one word, I would say this book is "cute." It didn't do a whole lot for me, but it was still an enjoyable read. Obviously, I am way out of the intended target group to find much in common with this book, but I can see why my students held it hostage for so long. I haven't been able to read it until now because it was constantly going missing off the book shelf.
Basically, you have three very chumming sisters who wish for something "amazing" to happen on a stormy night. Since the ages vary, the "amazing" thing also varies for each sister. I loved how the youngest sister, Joey, was disgusted by boys. Her wish was to see a rare blue tree frog. Stevie, the middle sister doesn't have a clear idea of what she wants, so she just wants something new and exciting. She doesn't count on that including a new boy that has a crush on her. Alex, the oldest, is already interested in boys and wants to get her first kiss. You can guess what her wish is.
It was pretty straight forward and predictable. I liked the little sketches added in by Joey. They were a funny addition. I also liked the fortune telling sock monkey. Those conversations were pretty funny-- perfect for a tween's sense of humor.
This book fits in well with a 10-12 year old girl's reading. I know for a fact that this particular age group loves this book. I've witnessed that first hand. It was a good, clean book. Two simple (and hilarious) kiss scenes are about as "trashy" as you'll find.The Sisters Club: Cloudy with a Chance of Boys OverviewThe forecast calls for a first crush after Stevie makes a wish for something new and daring in this authentic, funny Sisters Club adventure.As the middle sister in a family with three girls, Stevie Reel doesn't know much about boys, and that's always been just fine with her. But lately, things have been changing: kids at school are starting to pair up, and Owen, the new boy in her Earth Science class, seems to have his sights set on Stevie. The trouble is, Stevie doesn't want a boyfriend- she's not even sure she's ready to have a boy friend. And her sisters, who know exactly where they stand on the issue of boys, are no help: drama queen Alex is busy trying to orchestrate a perfect, Romeo-and-Juliet-style first kiss from her heartthrob, Scott Towel (er, Howell), while Joey can't understand why anyone would like a boy better than a frog anyway. If only figuring out boys were as easy as predicting the weather!

Having raced to Bermuda three times I can identify with this captain and crew, and could not put the book down. It is an extremely will written true suspense and survival story. Hot Weather ReviewJohn is a former college football player, who came out back in high school. He is now facing his first summer working, and is not taking the loss of his summer well. There appears to be no end to the rut he has gotten himself into--no boyfriend, his car has died, it is hotter then hell out and he has to find another place to have lunch. But walking into the empty diner might just be the summer relief he needs.
Keith is in between semesters of school and while all of his friends are hanging out at the beach for the summer. he needs to make money for school. He can't believe it when John walks into the diner, and when he comes back. But does John feel the same things he does and is he willing to take things slowly like Keith wants? The outside temperature is not the only thing heating up this summer.
Hot Weather was my first foray into M/M romances and I was very pleasantly surprised. The story was very well written with characters the author made became real as life in my mind You could easily imagine this story happening during a summer heat wave. I found it interesting to see the dynamic play out between John and Keith and I found myself rooting for Keith to get what he wanted in the end, and bring John around to his way of thinking. There was at least one super hot scene involving M/M erotica but it was so well written any lover of heterosexual romances as well M/M or F/F will enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoyed this authors writing and will look for other works by him in the future.

Tall, slender, green-eyed Keith runs the lunch shift at the local diner, an air-conditioned oasis away from what John's life has become. The Weather in the Streets (Virago Modern Classics) ReviewRosamond Lehmann's _The Weather in the Streets_ is a sequel to her earlier book, _Invitation to the Waltz_. Here, Olivia, who in _Invitation to the Waltz_ was a nervous debutante, is now older, though perhaps not much wiser; separated from her husband, she falls in love with the married brother of an old friend and embarks upon a tempestuous affair. Compared to its predecessor, _The Weather in the Streets_ is darker, but more powerful and more complex. Olivia's inner monologues are brilliantly done, and Lehmann even slips into the first person for one section of the book, though the change is so unobtrusive that I almost didn't notice it. Of all of the writers I've read, Lehmann is one of the best at getting into her character's thoughts and showing us their experiences and emotions honestly and directly.The Weather in the Streets (Virago Modern Classics) OverviewTaking up where Invitation to the Waltz left off, The Weather in the Streets shows us Olivia Curtis ten years older, a failed marriage behind her, thinner, sadder, and apprently not much wiser. Girl, Make a Zombie, Start Your Own Religion ReviewI most definitely don't regret purchasing this book, albeit for the wrong reasons (free t-shirt). This book was funny and informative to say the least, but it is not a how-to or self-help, which I was led to believe. I don't know how other Mental Floss books are (so maybe I could have known what to expect), but I can imagine they are just like this one: an amusing facts book.
This book has great and wonderfully random facts and info (mainly historical), like how to get out of jury duty (one of the few useful facts), or the real deal behind ninjas (WARNING: if you love ninjas, this might be a little too informative), or even how to get out of quicksand (another rare useful tid-bit). I would recommend it as a bathroom or coffee table book, but that is not to say it was poor quality. Heavy Weather Avoidance and Route Design ReviewThis book forms an excellent basis for a "mental model" of upper level 500 mb contour charts and their relevance to surface weather, The initial explanatory chapters suffer from some murkiness in terminology: Are we talking about temperature, pressure, pressure surfaces, pressure "lines" etc.? But a careful reading will sort these terms out and will clarify the terminology in the reader's mind. The dynamic, three dimensional nature of the earth's atmosphere presents a difficult modelling problem for both the presenter and the mariner trying to derive information from the presentation that is useful to him. I would recommend this book as a worthy addition to any professional library, both for the commercial and the recreational mariner. It is both a good off-season study for the recreational boater and a practical on-board reference aid in interpreting weather information received.
The later chapters on weather routing and storm analysis are particularly valuable.

In Heavy Weather Avoidance, Chen and Chesneau merge the seamanship of a master mariner and the forecast expertise of a senior meteorologist, providing readers with double-barrel exposure to what actually goes on in the atmosphere and on the sea s surface. His game plan includes a sector analysis of short wave troughs, breaking them into four distinct zones and prioritizing the relative safety of navigating through each region.
