The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) ReviewLutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. The illustrations by Dennis Tasa are, of course, excellent, as are most of the photos. I was required to read Ahrens book and I found it very helpful and informative. At times it was a little dull and simple, but it covered the atmosphere and weather related topics extremely well. My Weather Journal (Shutterbug Books) ReviewI wanted to write a quick review of this item mostly because it wasn't what I thought it was. I was looking for an actual journal for keeping track of our local weather and while such an idea can be created easily enough from items at hand, I had thought that having an actual official weather recording journal might be a bit more exciting as we began this. Alas, that was not what this was.
"My Weather Journal" is simply an introduction to temperature for the young child. It It covers seven of the twelve months with an average temperature if you live in a four season climate in the northern hemisphere. The "hands on" activity portion of this book is a sliding thermometer that can be accessed from every page so that your child or student can slide the mercury to the temperature given for the month in question. Each 2-page spread offers a photograph of the time of year with a journal entry such as the one for March 11th:
Dear Journal,
Today the weather is damp and foggy.
All of the winter snow has melted.
There might be rain on the way.
The temperature is 45 F.
It is a good day to stay inside and write in my journal.
And so on for the other months. The book is clearly intended for the K-1 crowd but could go along with any math lesson covering temperature if your child happens to be getting it in a different grade. My one gripe would be only offering the Fahrenheit scale. In a world that is mostly metric I would have appreciated covering from the git go that there is another common form of measuring temperature and have the early experience of comparing the two and seeing the difference so that it might begin to be natural for the mind to automatically have some reference points besides 0 and 100 when thinking centigrade.
Despite it being a little "young" in my son's case, we did keep the book. He still enjoyed playing with the thermometer and afterward was more inclined to run around the house looking for thermometers to tell him the temperature inside and out than he was after simply filling in the obligatory answers on his math worksheets. I'll count that for something -- if not exactly what I was looking for still a catalyst; but we're still going to make a legitimate weather journal and keep daily outside readings, general weather observations and advance to cloud types (starting with cirrus, stratus and cumulus as a starter and advancing a bit more later on down the line).My Weather Journal (Shutterbug Books) Overview

As a beginning weather hobbyist with a new weather station, I have been looking at many weather books over the past couple months. I have been disappointed. Most seem geared to elementary school levels. A couple handfuls are for the general population, a few intermediate, and a couple handfuls are for more advanced hobbyists or professionals.
This book was one of the very few that I would strongly recommend. The information is great and presented very well. It is colorful and slick (yes, substance is more important than slickness, but this book has both).
I found the CD less than useful, so I tried it and removed it. You won't be missing anything, really. The book has it all. Just a great book.Meteorology Today: An Introduction to Weather, Climate, and the Environment (with InfoTrac and Blue Skies CD-ROM) OverviewMETEOROLOGY TODAY has for many years been one of the most widely used and authoritative texts for the introductory meteorology course. Battling the Elements: Weather and Terrain in the Conduct of War ReviewIs this a book on geography for a military strategist or a study of military geography for a general geographer? I'm inclined to say it is both.
The words, "...couldn't put it down ...", may be overworked but how often can they be applied to what is, basically, a text book?
The book is divided into 12 chapters, each based on an element of physical geography (terrain, weather, climate, sea coasts, etc.) Each chapter gives a very general background on the geographic element (all very much in non-geographer language) and then gives the chronology of two or three battles showing how the physical feature shaped the battle's outcome. The range of battles go from Kubla Khan's 1274 attack on Japan to Khe Sanh, Viet Nam in 1968. They stretch the globe from Iwo Jima in the Pacific to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. It is a delightful combination of geography and military strategy.
As I am writing this, the world is discussing the possible intervention of ground troops in Kosovo. I hope the generals making the decisions have a sound geographic background. (Maybe Amazon.Com will send the Pentagon a few copies of this outstandingly readable work.)Battling the Elements: Weather and Terrain in the Conduct of War Overview

Exercises for Weather and Climate (7th Edition) ReviewThis book is an adjunct to a meteorology class I am taking. It is full of errors, mathmatical ones, graphics, even page numbers. I expect better from Pearson. I don't know who edited this book but they did a poor job.
Also the labs do not flow particularly well, and some things don't make sense. Not the greatest teaching tool I have ever seen, even with the cool CD.
