The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) ReviewLutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. The illustrations by Dennis Tasa are, of course, excellent, as are most of the photos. I used this text for a weather and climate class I taught and would use it again. The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) OverviewFor introductory courses in Introduction to Meteorology, Introduction to Weather and Climate, and Introduction to the Atmosphere, in departments of Geography, Physical Sciences, Meteorology, Earth Sciences, Geology, and Physics. This student-friendly text offers a current and comprehensive introduction to the atmosphere-its components, problems, and applications. It contains easy-to-understand and everyday examples that reinforce basic concepts and related science principles.

Kingfisher Knowledge: Endangered Planet ReviewThis is a very informative book on the environment. The first chapter teaches us about life on earth and the things that we need to live. The next chapter tells us about threats to the earth such as population growth, the greenhouse effect and air pollution. The third and final chapter is all about things that we can do to help protect the earth such as conserving resource, recycling, and wildlife protection. What did you like or not like about the book?
I liked the fact that at the end of each chapter has a section called Go Further. This section features vocabulary words, websites, and booklists that kids can look for to learn more.
Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?
This is a great book for kids ages 8-11 interested in ecology. They will enjoy the mix of pictures and useful information. The book would even make a great resource for report writing

Radiative Transfer in the Atmosphere and Ocean (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series) ReviewThe service provided is indeed very good. However, inevitably there exist some printing mistakes in this hard cover edition. Some pages are confused with others, also some characters are printed wrong. That's why I just give it 4 stats other than 5.Radiative Transfer in the Atmosphere and Ocean (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series) OverviewThis text provides a foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of radiative transfer, for advanced students of atmospheric, oceanic and environmental sciences. The transfer of solar and infrared radiation through optically-thick clouds, aerosol layer, and the oceanic mixed layer is presented through the use of heuristic models of scattering and absorption, and a systematic approach to formulation and solution of the radiative transfer equation. Problems such as the the transmission of ultraviolet radiation through the atmosphere and ocean, remote sensing, solar heating and infrared cooling processes, UV biological dose rates, and Greenhouse warming are solved using a variety of methods. This self-contained, systematic treatment will prepare students from a range of disciplines in problems concerning the effects of solar and infrared radiation on natural systems. The hardback edition received excellent reviews.

Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) ReviewI recently began to pursue a life long interest in learning more about severe weather; it's forecasting and impact on the environment. As my search for materials to help me learn expanded and my research came to its peak, I kept getting the same feedback from all the various web sites and sources. "Pick up anything from Tim Vasquez."
I have looked high and low for anything that didn't require a physics degree to read and I have found that in every single book I have purchased with his name on it. His books have excited me even more about severe weather and led me down the path to becoming a trained spotter with Skywarn. I cannot recommend his books highly enough.
Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) OverviewThe science of forecasting has not changed, but the Internet and new marvels of technology have completely redefined the process. It's not a rare thing for weather hobbyists and National Weather Service forecasters to get a product from the very same site. With more and more charts and tools appearing on the Internet by the week, how do you make sense of the avalanche of weather imagery and data? Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. The WSR-88D doppler radar, in use by the United States weather services, has played a vast part in the weather information revolution. In the Weather Map Handbook, it gets thirty pages packed with the fundamentals and algorithms of the WSR-88D. Much of this information is obscure and nearly impossible to find. From the workings of the Composite Reflectivity product to the exact process used by the Mesocyclone Detection Algorithm to deconstruct a radar scan, any NEXRAD radar product on the Internet can be understood. From the WRF to the NGM, from the GFS to the GEM, each numerical forecast model is revealed in incredible detail. Ensemble forecasts are highlighted. The satellite chapter explains visible, infrared, and water vapor imagery, how it is created, and how to interpret it. Even the METAR, TAF, SYNOP, and radiosonde formats get their own sections, complete with decoding instructions. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more! Whether you're a hobbyist, private forecaster, a professional, or a student, the Weather Map Handbook is the book you can't be without.

Meteorology Demystified ReviewThe purpose of this book is to demystify weather. But while the book begins with a promising use of physical equations, these serve only to pad the book with test questions that are not further applied in the text to demystify (i.e., explain in causal terms) why things happen in the atmosphere. For example, there is no explanation of the Coriolis effect, and thus the wind patterns presented early on make no sense at all. There is a great deal of talk about what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a tornado, and so on, but this information is readily available from any disaster center and elsewhere on the web. I came away from this book more mystified than when I opened it. A tempestuous disappointment.Meteorology Demystified Overview

Meteorology Today: An Introduction to Weather, Climate, and the Environment (with InfoTrac and Blue Skies CD-ROM) ReviewThis is a great book. It was expensive (aren't all college textbooks?), but worth it.
As a beginning weather hobbyist with a new weather station, I have been looking at many weather books over the past couple months. I have been disappointed. Most seem geared to elementary school levels. A couple handfuls are for the general population, a few intermediate, and a couple handfuls are for more advanced hobbyists or professionals.
This book was one of the very few that I would strongly recommend. The information is great and presented very well. It is colorful and slick (yes, substance is more important than slickness, but this book has both).
I found the CD less than useful, so I tried it and removed it. You won't be missing anything, really. The book has it all. Just a great book.Meteorology Today: An Introduction to Weather, Climate, and the Environment (with InfoTrac and Blue Skies CD-ROM) OverviewMETEOROLOGY TODAY has for many years been one of the most widely used and authoritative texts for the introductory meteorology course. Each edition is extensively reviewed by leading researchers in the field to ensure that the text remains completely up-to-date and reflects today's current understanding of meteorological concepts. Author Donald Ahrens has been widely praised for his ability to explain relatively complicated ideas so that even under-prepared students can understand them. The text's clear and inviting presentation is supplemented by numerous pedagogical features that help augment students' understanding. Introductory stories found at the beginning of each chapter draws students naturally into the discussion. In-chapter reviews then help students to consolidate their understanding as they read, while four types of end-of-chapter exercises provide opportunities for everything from further review to in-class discussion questions. Graphics are carefully designed and subsequently refined so that the key ideas clearly emerge. Many of the photos in the book are taken by the author and provide unmatched images of dramatic weather phenomena. A unique and popular feature over this title's seven editions has been the foldout cloud chart at the back of the book. A wealth of online resources accompanies METEOROLOGY TODAY, Seventh Edition, allowing professors to integrate striking and illuminative interactive weather exercises into their course. Many of the exercises on the BLUE SKIES CD-ROM packaged FREE with each new copy of the text are tied to downloadable real-time weather data, offering instructors an easy way to bring the exploration of current weather events into the course discussion.

Weather Map Handbook ReviewI do a lot of sailing, and really needed something to guide me through all of the available charts. I'm glad to say that this title measures up in every regard. It covers each type of weather chart, one by one, such as the Surface Chart, 700 mb Chart, and so on, presents an example, and scrutinizes the purpose and utility of each one. It even covers forecast models and radar products. This really is a unique (and welcome) departure from the format of other weather books. I found that the Weather Map Handbook gave me some excellent insight into understanding the weather systems that I have to deal with on the Gulf Coast. My only beef with the book is that it needs a few more marine-oriented charts. Some color maps would be nice, but this doesn't really detract from the book. Two thumbs up!Weather Map Handbook OverviewThe Weather Map Handbook explains nearly every forecasting chart used in meteorology. It's designed especially for the Internet, showing how to predict weather from scratch using the same charts that professional meteorologists use.A complete listing of weather map symbols, iconographs, and decoding information fills the pages. It's perfect for hobbyists, pilots, students, broadcasters, and storm chasers.Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. Blame It on the Rain: How the Weather Has Changed History Review
Good history is hard to find. For example, did you know?
--At one point in human history, there may have been as few as 500 women capable of procreation. They were very popular.
--Because of the bubonic plague which first...well, plagued Europe in the 6th century, English is the dominant language in the world today.
--The hostile climate in Siberia made it possible for the eruption of modern American culture.
--Napoleon lost the battle of Waterloo because it was raining.
--Had it not been for the Little Ice Age in the 15-16th centuries, we would not have Stradivarius violins today.
--In 1947, a scientist proved you could change the course of a hurricane headed to the coast of Florida by dropping two hundred pounds of dry ice into its eye. What the scientist didn't demonstrate was that he could control the new direction, which was Savannah, Georgia where it did about five million dollars worth of damage. The Georgians weren't amused.
Of course you didn't know all this. How could you? There's a lot more history than there's time to read it, which is why the world owes a great debt of thanks to Laura Lee for bringing into the light so much that had been hidden in mist and fog. With a dry sense of humor and a keen eye for recognizing and marrying apparently unrelated events, she has created the perfect excuse for abandoning Gibbon's 25,000 page Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and relying on her slim volume for the truth behind much of world history.
The book brings to mind that most august and definitive history of the island of Britain, 1066 and All That: A Memorable History of England, comprising all the parts you can remember, including 103 Good Things, 5 Bad Kings, and 2 Genuine Dates. Written by W.C. Sellar and R.J. Yeatman and published in 1930, it proved that history need not be long, complicated, or even accurate in order to be interesting.
To her credit, Ms. Lee tackles the entire world. At one point she toys with the notion of bring the Big Bang Theory into her thesis, but, in this reviewer's eyes, wisely backs away. That's a black hole from which few if any historians, even of Ms. Lee's caliber, ever return.
There are books that, like potato chips, cannot be put down. There are others that, like fine chocolate, must be savored a bit at a time. Blame it on the Rain clearly falls into the latter category. One only need pick it up to read a brief chapter (few are longer than five or six pages,) smile, and feel ennobled by the wisdom one has gained. While not a large box of chocolates, the book, if read properly, can keep one's appetite sated for months.
There is one significant flaw in the book that cannot be overlooked. Ms. Lee has been duped by Sir Thomas Moore (when he was still a lackey publicist for Henry VIII) who influenced Shakespeare into creating the pernicious lie that King Richard III of England murdered two young princes and stole the throne of England for himself. This is not true. Nor was Richard a hunch-back. Nor was he a particularly bad guy. He just happened to not be of the same family as Henry VII who needed to buttress his dubious claim to the throne.
But anyone can make a mistake.
Ms. Lee does have a message within this delightful romp through the mud, rain, sleet, and snow. "If all of this history and science has taught us anything it is this: We are neither the masters of the weather nor the servants of it--we are in a marriage with it."
We may not be masters of the weather, but Laura Lee is a master of the English language. Her writing is crisp, direct, and playful while at the same time powerful enough to bring to life some of the great horrors of human existence.Blame It on the Rain: How the Weather Has Changed History Overview
