The transfer of solar and infrared radiation through optically-thick clouds, aerosol layer, and the oceanic mixed layer is presented through the use of heuristic models of scattering and absorption, and a systematic approach to formulation and solution of the radiative transfer equation. Problems such as the the transmission of ultraviolet radiation through the atmosphere and ocean, remote sensing, solar heating and infrared cooling processes, UV biological dose rates, and Greenhouse warming are solved using a variety of methods. This self-contained, systematic treatment will prepare students from a range of disciplines in problems concerning the effects of solar and infrared radiation on natural systems. The hardback edition received excellent reviews.

Introduction To Three-dimensional Climate Modeling ReviewWhile this isn't a complete introduction, and while it may inevitably be slightly out of date, this is nonetheless the best introduction to climate modeling I've found. It presents the primary methods, and discusses the accomplishments and shortcomings of the field honestly (if at times a bit defensively).
There are clear limitations to climate modeling. For anyone with training in more mainstream Artificial Intelligence techniques, it's very uncomfortable to "test on the training data," which is exactly what climate modelers must do (i.e., they must run their models on the recent past, and if their models don't perform well on it, they will be tweaked until they do--effectively "cheating" because fidelity to the recent past is obviously no indication of predictive power if you tweak the model specifically to work on the recent past). Much of the uncertainty comes from sub-grid interactions that must be parameterized. For example, the formation of clouds is still an area of great uncertainty, and yet has an enormous effect on the climate. The authors recognize this issue, and identify it as a field where future research should focus.
On the other hand, climate modeling has been extremely useful as an inspiration to the imagination, and in working out the logical implications of what we currently believe to be true (both through those things that can be tested in a lab, like the absorption spectrum of carbon dioxide, or those that need to be parameterized, like cloud formation). We can't predict the future, but models allow us to get a sense of what may happen.
The authors discuss all of this, and illustrate it throughout. Of course, as scientists who have spent their lives in climate modeling, they are as supportive of climate modeling as one might expect. But they are also good scientists, and therefore open about the shortcomings.
In short, I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to climate modeling. It's a fascinating and important subject that more people should know more about.Introduction To Three-dimensional Climate Modeling OverviewThis book provides an introduction to the development of three-dimensional climate models, including their four major components: atmosphere, ocean, land/vegetation, and sea ice. The fundamental processes in each component and the interactions among them are explained using basic scientific principles, and elements of the numerical methods used in solving the model equations are also provided. The authors show how the theory and models grew historically and how well they are able to account for known aspects of the climate system. This book is written so that a reader who is only vaguely aware of climate models will be able to gain an understanding of what the models are attempting to simulate, how the models are constructed, what the models have succeeded in simulating, and how the models are being used. Examples illustrating the use of the models to simulate aspects of the current climate system are followed by examples illustrating the application of the models to important scientific areas such as understanding paleoclimates, the last millennium, the El Nino/Southern Oscillation, and the effects of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations on future climate change. The book is appropriate for scientists, graduate students, and upper-level undergraduates and can be used as a textbook or for self study and reference. The authors have considerably updated the book from the first edition by adding descriptions of many techniques and results developed since the mid-1980s.

Cloud Dynamics, Volume 53 (International Geophysics) ReviewDivided into two sections ("Fundamentals" and "Phenomena") Houze's book examines the general structure, physics, and evolution of a wide range of cloud types/forms. It's often difficult to blend these viewpoints together, but Houze does so with a healthy mix of equations (some difficult!), popular figures from the literature, and explanations.
The "Fundamentals" section (first 4 chapters) is a great reference item for anyone interested in meteorology: a pictorial cloud atlas, reviews of the equations of motion, of general microphysics (how particles in clouds form, grow, and decay), and a discussion of weather radar. "Phenomena" range from fog to cumulus clouds to hurricanes and even mid-latitude cyclones.
Houze applies the "fundamentals" to all of the "phenomena" he covers...once you master the fundamentals--senior undergraduates and beginning graduate students should be able to follow the math--discussion of the cloud processes becomes easier to read.Cloud Dynamics, Volume 53 (International Geophysics) Overview

Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry ReviewI used Prof. Jacob's pre-press web edition of this book to teach 20+ bachelor's students Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen during the fall of 1999. I have found it difficult to find an appropriate introductory level text for this class, and have usually been borrowing material for the class from four or five other books. The book is well written and a pleasure to read, but the real treat are the problems at the end of each chapter. Jacob has scoured the literature and illustrates important points in each chapter using recent advances in the field. The students and their instructor learned a great deal from the author's insightful choice of topics. The book reflects the author's perspective of the field, and is longer on atmospheric physics and shorter on chemistry than the title implies. I would have liked more information on aerosols, and the students definitely would have liked more introductory material on chemistry. Overall I would recommend this book to professionals interested in learning more about global warming or ozone depletion, and to teachers looking for a good book for bachelors or new graduate students.Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry Overview
Atmospheric chemistry is one of the fastest growing fields in the earth sciences. Until now, however, there has been no book designed to help students capture the essence of the subject in a brief course of study. Daniel Jacob, a leading researcher and teacher in the field, addresses that problem by presenting the first textbook on atmospheric chemistry for a one-semester course. Based on the approach he developed in his class at Harvard, Jacob introduces students in clear and concise chapters to the fundamentals as well as the latest ideas and findings in the field.

Synoptic-Dynamic Meteorology in Midlatitudes: Volume II: Observations and Theory of Weather Systems ReviewBluestein's second volume is much more qualitative than the first; instead of dozens of derivations, he gives the reader a solid discussion of cyclones, applications of QG theory, fronts, jets, and then severe weather.
If you are new to meteorology, you'll still need a strong mathmematical background to follow Bluestein's text. The book is written at the academic level...I believe that it is best suited as a reference for those with prior courses in meteorology.
There are not many review problems at the end of any of the three chapters; this is disappointing, as there could easily be dozens (or more!) per section. Still, Bluestein's two-volume series is a must-have for all serious meteorologists.Synoptic-Dynamic Meteorology in Midlatitudes: Volume II: Observations and Theory of Weather Systems OverviewSynoptic meteorology, the study of large-scale weather systems and forecasting using observation, and dynamic meteorology, the study of the laws of physics involved in air movement, are treated in this major new text in two volumes. The author, a meteorologist noted for his research on tornadoes and severe storms, based his work on material he has taught for the past 14 years at the University of Oklahoma. There are no modern texts on the topic. Volume II covers the formation, motion and climatology of extratropical weather systems in the context of the quasigeostrophic theory and "IPV" thinking, the formation and structure of fronts and jets, applications of semigeostrophic theory, and the observed structure and dynamics of precipitation systems in midlatitudes.

Mid-Latitude Weather Systems ReviewCarlson has written a profound book on synoptic systems. Unlike many meteorology texts, this book stresses physical understanding of synoptic systems through practical and lucid mathematical treatment. The physical insight Carlson provides so eloquently makes this an essential read for every student taking synoptic lab. Carlson explains abstruse topics (thermal vorticity for example) in a lucid and cogent manner. There are numerous case studies which are covered in depth and flow perfectly with the points Carlson wants to convey. The book does assume the reader has atleast a fundamental understanding of dynamics and thermo.
I would consider this book to be a perfect supplement to Bluestein's Vol I, Chapter 5, which is a rigorous mathematical treatment of QG theory. It would also serve well as an alternative view of synoptic systems to Bluestein's Vol II since the way they approach topics are considerably different. This book is essential reading for the student and the professional in the field. I would consider this to be the best book I have ever read on the subject despite a few obvious errors. Below are a listing of the chapters in the book:

I am a graduate student working on mesoscale meteorology models and good summaries of the many physics options was hard to find. This book fills that gap. It covers parameterization of land surface, soil & vegetation, water, surface layer & planetary boundary layer, convection, microphysics, radiation, clouds, and gravity waves. It is extremely well written (I read it cover to cover). It gives qualitative evaluations along with the necessary equations. The author reviews the basic science behind each type of parameterization at the beginning of each chapter, which avoids having to look back at other books for this information. The variables are defined after EACH equation so no having to look back to know what a letter stands for (every book should do this!). He also avoids unnecessary acronyms. He gives practical advices, such as at what resolution you should run convective vs. microphysics parameterizations. He also includes information on parameterizations for climate models.I highly recommend this book for anyone running NWP models.Parameterization Schemes: Keys to Understanding Numerical Weather Prediction Models OverviewNumerical weather prediction models play an increasingly important role in meteorology, both in short- and medium-range forecasting and global climate change studies.
