Storms in Space ReviewI'm frequently quoted in this book, so have an interest in it
having been well done. John has done a fine job in giving explanations
that will appeal to readers from outside our community
and that should serve as a model for writers in
our field. He conveys technical information easily and makes
it interesting -- but I'm an easy sell. I have found about
6 mistakes in the text, but they are mostly trivial.Storms in Space OverviewImagine what an extra-terrestrial Weather Channel would be like, with a professional space weatherman as your forecaster, and you get rather close to the astounding aspects of nature described in John Freeman's Storms in Space. Known only to a handful of space scientists, yet capable of disrupting technical systems as extensive as communication satellites and electric power gridsStorms in Space is the first book to unveil the unseen elements of outer space.Opening with a series of vignettes (describing how the Northern and Southern lights [the aurora] are a visible manifestation of space storms, or how satellites serve as weather stations in space), Freeman provides visual analogies to help illustrate the effects of a storm in space on people. These vignettes explore the chain of events that lead to the storm and to connect the facets of the storm with the scenes in the vignettes. Freeman details the state of the art in forecasting space storms, the models that are used, and the prospects for their future improvement. He also describes the hazards of space storms for human technological systems including human space flight.Storms in Space provides both a new understanding and appreciation of how seemingly insignificant disturbances out there can have major effects right here. John W. Freeman is Professor Emeritus and Research Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University.Over the past 35 years he has directed a number of satellite instrumentation projects, including the Apollo 12, 14, and 15 projects for which he was awarded the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement (1973).He has also served as Editor-in-Chief of Space Power.Freeman is currently working to develop a model that will forecast the intensity of the Van Allen Radiation Belts and helping to build a National Space Weather Service.

Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) ReviewIf the tech writers for Panasonic and Canon could write as clearly as Mark Maslin, I could probably program all my electronics without asking my teenage son for help! In 148 pages, he provides as much fair and balanced insight into the science and the politics of "global warming" as any five other books I've looked at, and as much information as most of us might need to behave as responsible citizens. Although the book is already "out of date" in view of the recent release of the 2007 IPCC report, none of its main points, either of science or of societal concern, have been supplanted.
Maslin is clearly convinced that anthropogenic climate change is occurring, and that it would be proper to take precautionary steps to deal with its possible effects. But he gives the skeptics their due, dispassionately summarizing their objections and responding respectfully when a response is available. He is NOT an alarmist, though he plainly thinks that some alarm is a reasonable reaction to the best-case scenarios as well as the worst.
I don't usually squeal that such-and-such book is a MUST-READ for everyone's sewing circle, Sunday School class, and dog-walker. If I had the means, however, I'd send every household in the USA a copy of this book along with the seasonal catalogues. My thanks to Jay, the only previous reviewer, for bringing this useful little book to my attention.Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions) OverviewGlobal warming is arguably the most critical and controversial issue facing the world in the twenty-first century, one that will affect every living creature on the planet. It is also an extraordinarily complex problem, which everyone needs to understand as clearly and completely as possible. This Very Short Introduction provides a concise and accessible explanation of the key aspects of global warming. Mark Maslin discusses how and why changes are occurring, sets current warming trends in the context of past climate change, examines the predicted impact of global warming, as well as the political controversies of recent years and the many proposed solutions. Fully updated for 2008, this compelling account offers the best current scientific understanding of global warming, describing recent developments in US policy and the UK Climate Change Bill, where we now stand with the Kyoto Protocol, and the latest findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Maslin also includes a chapter on local solutions, reflecting the now widely held view that, to mitigate any impending disaster, governments as well as individuals must to act together.

Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast ReviewThere are some annoying typographical errors in this book, otherwise I would give
it five stars --- visit the book's website for a list of errata.
Plenty of books tell you about global warming, but this book really does
dymystify the nuts and bolts of how climate scientists know what they
say they know. The book says it is based on a course for non-scientists and
it shows --- the explanations are clearly honed from experience of explaining
scientific concepts to non-scientists. It is always difficult for scientists
in any field to convey the depth of knowledge which has accumulated over
a long period of time to people coming from other disciplines, but this book
does a pretty good job.Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast Overview

Cloud Dance ReviewThomas Locker creates an interesting way to learn about clouds in this beautifully illustrated book. As the reader turns the pages of this book, they encounter numerous types of clouds. The first illustration shows the many different sizes and shapes clouds can assume, from the light and wispy cirrus cloud to the puffy cumulus cloud. With each turn of the page, clouds are seen in different seasons and times of day, under various weather conditions. The illustrations are eye appealing oil paintings. As you view each picture, it is like you are standing on the ground and seeing the vast sky with the clouds creating a mosaic of lights, shapes, and colors. You can almost feel the rain hitting your face when you look at the painting depicting clouds in a rain storm. The painting of the clouds that "shimmer in the moonlight" gives the reader a sense of calm. Each painting in this book causes the reader to feel some emotion--from the suppressed anger of a developing thunderstorm to the warm peace of a sunset. At the end of the book the author includes factual information about clouds. The scientific names are given for all the clouds along with a description. Answers are also given for such questions as "How are clouds formed?" and "How high does the sky reach?"This book would be a good way to introduce a science unit on clouds and weather. The illustrations would stimulate a student's imagination and could be a starting point for them to begin thinking about what clouds look like at different times and in a variety of conditions. Cloud Dance would be a valuable addition to anyone's library.Cloud Dance Overview

Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth ReviewEver since I was a child trapped inside by the pouring rain as the remnants of Camille passed over East Tennessee, I have been fascinated by hurricanes. With that in mind, this book was hard to resist. Especially since I had spent many hours watching Dr. Sheets on television. It is pretty obvious though that Jack Williams did most of the writing and for those of us who are not that familiar with the science of meteorology that is a very good thing for this is a very complicated subject and dumbing down is exactly what I needed.
This book is not so much a book about major hurricanes as it is a history of the predicting of hurricanes. From Columbus to the present satellites and Doppler systems this book tells the story of man's attempts to guess what Mother Nature is up to. There is even a chapter about attempts to actually control hurricanes.
Even with the simple way the authors attempted to tell their story I was lost at times but not all too often. For a trained meteorologist this book would probably seem almost childish, but for the average person like myself it is just about right. I still don't completely understand everything about wind sheer, computer models, and latent heat but I am at least familiar with the terms now. From now on, as a hurricane approaches the U.S. coast and I sit there in front of the TV I will have a vague idea of how the computer models work and will know all about the Bermuda high.
The chapter I found the most interesting was the chapter about hurricane Andrew. That is the kind of thing I was actually looking for in this book but even though I only found one chapter of what I had been looking for, I still found this book to be highly informative, interesting, and well written. I imagine that Dr. Sheets could write an entire book on Andrew, and I wish he wouldHurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth Overview

Climate, History and the Modern World ReviewI used this book as a reference to write a position paper on global warming for a graduate course in Environmental Science. Professor Lamb's book is a fascinating account of how climate has impacted human history. Originally published in 1982 the new edition (1995) includes material on global warming, atmospheric pollution, population growth, and implications for future climatic fluctuations. This is a one stop reference.Climate, History and the Modern World OverviewWe live in a world that is increasingly vulnerable to climatic shocks - affecting agriculture and industry, government and international trade, not to mention human health and happiness. Serious anxieties have been aroused by respected scientists warning of dire perils that could resultfrom upsets of the climatic regime. In this internationallyacclaimed book, Emeritus Professor Hubert Lamb examines what we know about climate, how the past record of climate can be reconstructed, the causes of climatic variation, and its impact on human affairs now and in the historical and prehistoric past. This 2nd Edition includes a new Preface and Postscript reviewing the wealth of literature to emerge in recent years, and discusses implications for a deeper understanding of the problems of future climatic fluctuations and forecasting.

Global Physical Climatology, Volume 56 (International Geophysics) ReviewThis is the most thorough, most rigorous, well-written textbook in global systems climatology that I've seen. If you're bright, interested, and aren't allergic to equations (you don't need to read them to understand the book, you just have to not freak out) then this text will teach you more about the planet as a dynamic system than any other that I've seen -- plus, unlike most texbooks, it's not chuck full of stupid mistakes. I've used it in my upper division climatology class since it came out.Global Physical Climatology, Volume 56 (International Geophysics) OverviewGlobal Physical Climatology is an introductory text devoted to the fundamental physical principles and problems of climate sensitivity and change. Addressing some of the most critical issues in climatology, this text features incisive coverage of topics that are central to understanding orbital parameter theory for past climate changes, and for anthropogenic and natural causes of near-future changes--Key Features* Covers the physics of climate change* Examines the nature of the current climate and its previous changes* Explores the sensitivity of climate and the mechanisms by which humans are likely to produce near-future climate changes* Provides instructive end-of-chapter exercises and appendices

Introduction to Micrometeorology, Volume 79, Second Edition (International Geophysics) ReviewThis book was used as the textbook for a class on hydrometeorology. The explanations and sequence of the text was good for an entry level class on the subject. The book does not cover precipitation and clouds, an important part of micrometeorology, but overall I would recommend the text. More detailed descriptions of some of the physical processes are given in other texts. Extensive reference section to lead interested readers to relevant research papers.Introduction to Micrometeorology, Volume 79, Second Edition (International Geophysics) OverviewThis book is intended as a textbook for courses in micrometeorology for undergraduate students (juniors or seniors) in meteorology or environmental science, as well as for an introductory graduate-level course in boundary-layer meteorology. It will also serve as agood reference for professional meteorologists, environmental scientists and engineers, particularly those interested in problems of air pollution, atmospheric-biospheric interactions, wind-engineering and engineering meteorology. The book outlines basic laws and concepts, before using qualitative descriptions to introduce more complex theories. This new edition is updated and expanded, as are the references. Each chapter features worked-through problems and exercises.

The Tri-State Tornado: The Story of America's Greatest Tornado Disaster ReviewI first read this book while taking a class in severe & unusual weather at the University of Illinois a few years ago. If you're into jaw-dropping weather phenomena, you really need to get this book. There are great interviews with survivors, a few astounding pictures, and some good basic science to back it all up.The Tri-State Tornado: The Story of America's Greatest Tornado Disaster OverviewThe Tri-State Tornado is a gripping account of the worst tornado disaster in American history. Claiming 689 lives during a three-hour rampage across Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925, the storm had one of the longest uninterrupted paths (219 miles) and one of the widest (up to one mile) of any recorded tornado. Its continuous energy was so extreme that it completely obliterated several small towns in its path. Although the fatality count was nearly that of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, with the exception of meteorologists and residents of the affected area, few had ever heard of this catastrophe until this book's initial release in 1992.
The Tri-State Tornado reconstructs the tragedy, using vivid eyewitness accounts of fourteen survivors who lived along the tornado's path from the Missouri Ozarks to southwestern Indiana. The clarity with which they recall that day in their lives over sixty years earlier will give readers the unsettling feeling that the tornado struck days, not decades, ago.

Synoptic-Dynamic Meteorology in Midlatitudes: Volume II: Observations and Theory of Weather Systems ReviewBluestein's second volume is much more qualitative than the first; instead of dozens of derivations, he gives the reader a solid discussion of cyclones, applications of QG theory, fronts, jets, and then severe weather.
If you are new to meteorology, you'll still need a strong mathmematical background to follow Bluestein's text. The book is written at the academic level...I believe that it is best suited as a reference for those with prior courses in meteorology.
There are not many review problems at the end of any of the three chapters; this is disappointing, as there could easily be dozens (or more!) per section. Still, Bluestein's two-volume series is a must-have for all serious meteorologists.Synoptic-Dynamic Meteorology in Midlatitudes: Volume II: Observations and Theory of Weather Systems OverviewSynoptic meteorology, the study of large-scale weather systems and forecasting using observation, and dynamic meteorology, the study of the laws of physics involved in air movement, are treated in this major new text in two volumes. The author, a meteorologist noted for his research on tornadoes and severe storms, based his work on material he has taught for the past 14 years at the University of Oklahoma. There are no modern texts on the topic. Volume II covers the formation, motion and climatology of extratropical weather systems in the context of the quasigeostrophic theory and "IPV" thinking, the formation and structure of fronts and jets, applications of semigeostrophic theory, and the observed structure and dynamics of precipitation systems in midlatitudes.

Meteorology Demystified ReviewThe purpose of this book is to demystify weather. But while the book begins with a promising use of physical equations, these serve only to pad the book with test questions that are not further applied in the text to demystify (i.e., explain in causal terms) why things happen in the atmosphere. For example, there is no explanation of the Coriolis effect, and thus the wind patterns presented early on make no sense at all. There is a great deal of talk about what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a tornado, and so on, but this information is readily available from any disaster center and elsewhere on the web. I came away from this book more mystified than when I opened it. A tempestuous disappointment.Meteorology Demystified Overview

The Dance of Air and Sea: How Oceans, Weather, and Life Link Together ReviewTaylor has a nice reporting style which is fine except when he is dealing with more difficult concepts, e.g. Rossby waves, or unresolved issues where the reader can get lost in the back and forth without a proper synthesis. He does particularly well with ecology, but perhaps I think that because I started with more understanding of the concepts. If Taylor finds something interesting or amusing, he will put it in the book even if it has no real link to anything else; this is fine with me as I always enjoyed the extraneous material.
At the end of this write-up is the best explanation of the Coriolis "force" I could find on the web. I will first try to summarize the most important material on air and water circulation.
In general winds and water redistribute heat toward the poles, with winds driving ocean currents such as the Gulf Stream. Since cold air is denser than warm air, you would expect surface winds in the Northern hemisphere (I will focus on that hemisphere) to blow like the trade winds, from north to south, or northeast to southwest because of the Coriolis force. However, surprisingly, there is a high pressure area 30 degrees north (the horse latitudes), causing winds to blow north from there, or from southWEST to northeast because of the Coriolis force. These are the prevailing westerlies which influence US winters, and account much more than the Gulf stream for the moderate winter temperatures in Europe (not just because of the direction from the south, but because they are flowing over water before arriving in Europe, and in winter water is usually warmer than land).

There is also a tendency for colder water to sink, again because of relative density. This relative density is a major contributor to a worldwide pattern of slow ocean circulation (thermohaline circulation) which also helps redistribute heat toward the poles. In the earth's history, sudden release of fresh water from the north pole due to icebergs melting or huge continental lakes quickly draining, has interfered with the thermohaline due to the lower density of fresh to salty water, thereby having a cooling effect on the northern temperate areas.
Monsoons are created because of the temperature differential between land and sea, the sea being cooler in summer, so winds blow on shore carrying moisture. This air rises due to mountains or other causes, therefore cooling, and releasing precipitation.
CORIOLIS "FORCE". "When an object starts to move north or south and is not firmly connected to the ground (air, artillery fire, etc) then it maintains its initial eastward speed as it moves. An object leaving the equator will retain the eastward speed of other objects at the equator, but if it travels far enough it will no longer be going east at the same speed the ground beneath it is. In reality there is no actual force involved, the ground is simply moving at a different speed than the object is "used to". The result is that an object travelling away from the equator will be heading east faster than the ground and will seem to be forced east by some mysterious force. Objects travelling towards the equator will be going more slowly than the ground beneath them and will seem to be forced west. [look up Coriolis force at wisc.edu where there is also a simple diagram]

Sentinels of the Sun: Forecasting Space Weather Review"Sentinels of the Sun: Forecasting Space Weather" is a readable and informative book that vastly increases the non-astronomers knowledge of the history and nature of space weather. As a regular reader of the New York Times Science section, I find that this book, by successful first-time authors, Barbara Poppe and Kristin Jorden, appeals to a similar audience--those interested, but not expert, in specific areas of science and its practical applications. Illustrated with a variety of interesting photos and graphics, "Sentinels of the Sun" fully engages its readers. I commend it to fellow Amazon-ites.
Sentinels of the Sun: Forecasting Space Weather OverviewWatched and worshipped for millennia by cultures around the world, the Sun has rightly been seen as the source of weather, heat, and light. For thousands of years, it has also been seen as sacred, mysterious, and powerful.Although we no longer worship the Sun, we study it for a different kind of survival. Space weather- phenomena caused by the Sun- can seriously affect the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems; it can also endanger human life and health. This book takes a look at space weather and the Space Environment Center, a federal agency devoted to the study of the Sun. The numerous players in the story have brought this science to the forefront of space physics and solar forecasting because they understand that Earth systems will be increasingly affected by the Sun. This exciting time in the scientific understanding of our Sun will affect each of us who talks on a cell phone, finds our way with a GPS receiver, flies to the top of the world or beyond, or simply sits out under th northern lights pondering such beautiful displays.

They've succeeded where many scientific writers have failed; Murphree and Miller were able to translate this complex subject, i.e., atmospheric dynamics, into plain English. As an operational meteorologist and educator, I highly recommend this book. A must buy!Watching Weather OverviewFolksy and informative, and sure to delight weather buffs, this delightful entry in the Accidental Scientist series borrows as much from the Farmer's Almanac as it does from meteorological texts. Mary Miller and Tom Murphree show how large-scale weather patterns can be understood on a local basis and teach readers how to anticipate weather based on an understanding of their immediate surroundings. For anyone interested in descriptive concepts (no maths)of general meteorology and environment systems - how they work, this book covers just about every topic of interest to us today. Content is clearly laid out and easy to understand. The graphics are first class. This is a great book for basic understanding of the workings of our atmosphere. I congratulate the author. As a companion and for further indepth knowledge (with simle maths) I suggest Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers.
