Ready, Set . . . WAIT: What Animals Do Before a Hurricane ReviewAuthor Patti R. Zelch and artist Connie McLennan have brought us another wonderful learning tool through Sylvan Dell Publishing. As with all the books offered by this company, this one is something rather special.
This work begins with a family preparing for a hurricane which will arrive shortly. As the family makes all the necessary preparations and precautions, the little boy of the family looks into a tree and wonders, "what do wild animals do before and during a hurricane?" And so our story really starts.
The book now take a look at twelve different animals; fish, lobsters, crocodiles, dolphins, manatees, butterflies, sharks, birds and rabbits, and briefly tells us just what preparations these creatures who surround us take when a big storm is about to hit. Over and over again the author stresses that the animals "know," and indeed, those of you that are familiar with the wildlife in your local area will understand perfectly what the author is talking about. The animals most certainly do know when a storm is about to hit or when the weather is in for a drastic change.
The story text in this work is straight forward and is geared toward the 4 through 9 year old age group. There is plenty in the story that will keep a child's interest and as a matter of fact should bring on a plethora of questions as you read! (Better do your homework). The words the author has chosen are easily read by this age group but the author has thrown vocabulary building words in here and there such as "instinctively," "antennae," and more. Each word could be used to develop a story within a story if the reader or teacher chooses to do so. This is something I like.
The illustrator, Connie McLennan has given us some amazing paintings of creatures in their natural habitat. I took a close look at the various animals represented here and could find absolutely nothing anatomically incorrect. The artist has use bold lines and colors yet has kept the integrity of the creature she has drawn along with a beautiful background in each and every frame. The text goes perfectly with the illustrations, all of which are in a double page format.
The last seven pages of this book are for the parent or teacher. We are given a rather close-up look at just what a hurricane is, it seasons, what cyclones, tropical cyclones and typhoons are. The designated strength number given to storms at different stages is discussed at length and there is a very nice summation of actions that need to be taken by us humans when a storm approaches. The author then goes on to discuss in more detail each of the critters covered in the book and gives a short discussion on animal behavior during storms.
This entire work is quite well researched by both author and artist. It is of course an ideal book to add to your child's library and it is also ideal for use in the public or private classroom and most certainly would be useful for home schoolers.
There is a tremendous amount of information packed into this small book and it has been professionally presented. This is certainly one you will want to put on your list.

Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938 ReviewAs an avid fan of all things weather-related, this book does not dissapoint. Much like Sebastian Unger's Perfect Storm, Sudden Sea focusses on an entire region that is caught off-guard by what in all estimates is still today one of the most devestatingly powerful storms the United States has seen. Scotti a does a wonderful job of intertwining story-lines stretching up and down the Eastern seaboard,further illustrating just how ill-prepared the population was for this freak storm.
Imagine not one by one, the middle-atlantic and new england coastlines being so devestated that cities were unable of warning the next. This is what happened in the summer of 1938. A storm that moved so fast and with such destruction that it literally reshaped the Eastern Coastline.
Buy this book. If you ever want to catch a glimpse into the humanity that becomes us in the face of disaster, this is a wonderful read. Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth ReviewEver since I was a child trapped inside by the pouring rain as the remnants of Camille passed over East Tennessee, I have been fascinated by hurricanes. With that in mind, this book was hard to resist. Especially since I had spent many hours watching Dr. Sheets on television. It is pretty obvious though that Jack Williams did most of the writing and for those of us who are not that familiar with the science of meteorology that is a very good thing for this is a very complicated subject and dumbing down is exactly what I needed.
This book is not so much a book about major hurricanes as it is a history of the predicting of hurricanes. From Columbus to the present satellites and Doppler systems this book tells the story of man's attempts to guess what Mother Nature is up to. There is even a chapter about attempts to actually control hurricanes.
Even with the simple way the authors attempted to tell their story I was lost at times but not all too often. For a trained meteorologist this book would probably seem almost childish, but for the average person like myself it is just about right. I still don't completely understand everything about wind sheer, computer models, and latent heat but I am at least familiar with the terms now. From now on, as a hurricane approaches the U.S. coast and I sit there in front of the TV I will have a vague idea of how the computer models work and will know all about the Bermuda high.
The chapter I found the most interesting was the chapter about hurricane Andrew. That is the kind of thing I was actually looking for in this book but even though I only found one chapter of what I had been looking for, I still found this book to be highly informative, interesting, and well written. I imagine that Dr. Sheets could write an entire book on Andrew, and I wish he wouldHurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth Overview

Other surviving family members and friends were also documented. The account of the military veterans who were living in tents in Matecumbe was fascinating as well as the personal stories about the people who lived or were visiting Matecumbe on that fateful day, and were reminiscent of the stories my mother recounted to me over the years. This storm forever changed the fabric of the lives of ones left behind. DK Eyewitness Books: Natural Disasters ReviewI am a big fan of the Dorling Kindersley 'Eyewitness Books' series. They offer an appealing combination of concise text and colorful images that provide a basic understanding of a particular subject. NATURAL DISASTERS, published by DK in 2006, offers a fascinating if sometimes scary look at the destructive forces mother nature has at her beck and call. While the book is intended for readers 9-12 years old, older readers will also find NATURAL DISASTERS of interest.
After brief sections on our restless earth, author Claire Watts discusses tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides/avalanches, hurricanes/tornadoes, floods, droughts, fires, climate changes, unnatural disasters, diseases/epidemics, and future disasters. Each topic gets at least a two-page spread with basic information on that topic and six-eight b&w and/or color photographs, maps or diagrams showing, for example, what an avalanche in action looks like and its aftermath. Some topics rate additional pages. The tsunami section, for instance, runs to 12 pages. The book also includes an FAQ section, glossary and useful websites but, curiously, no bibliography.
The information and illustrations are appropriate for the intended age level. Some of the images, especially of people in peril, might be too intense for younger readers.
Watts' book would be ideal for students reports and for anyone with a beginning interest in the world of natural disasters, how people cope with them and how nations/agencies work to minimize the damage they inflict. Island in a Storm: A Rising Sea, a Vanishing Coast, and a Nineteenth-Century Disaster that Warns of a Warmer World ReviewAt first glance, you would wonder as to the timeliness of a book addressing a devastating storm which occurred in 1856 and slammed into the Gulf of Mexico and in particular, a small resort island; Isle Derniere. After reading just the first chapter of this rather unique and amazing work, the wonder will disappear as you, the reader will start recognizing quite familiar situations, granted, often stored in the back of the mind, but never the less there. The message of this work is timeless...in so many different ways.
This work offers so very much in so few pages. It is like reading two or three books simultaneously. Not only is the story absolutely captivating, but the facts, trivial and important, fly fast and furious. We receive a wonderful lesson in history as the author takes us to antebellum Louisiana, giving the reader glimpses in the lives of the rich sugarcane plantation owners, politicians, developers, Riverboat Captains, the poor working people, the horrid and unworkable institution of slavery, transportation of the time, attitudes, dress, diet and so much more. A history of New Orleans is served up which is a separate and fascinating study unto its own. Along with the history lesson, the reader receives lessons in river, ocean and weather dynamics along with a life and death story of an island. Behind this entire work though, the author has woven dire warnings; warnings that need to be heeded. Have we changed all that much since the mid 1800s?
Basically, this is the story of Isle Derniere, one of the various barrier islands off of the coast of Louisiana which on August 10, 1856 was hit and demolished and more or less completely whipped out by a hurricane. It is the story of the rich vacationers there and their slaves as they tried desperately to survive. Along with these unfortunate folk, we have a number of nearby ships which are suffering the same fate. Through the authors pen we are served a wonderful, vivid and delicious profile of many individuals; the good, the bad and the ugly. The reader must keep in mind that this is not in any sense of the word a novel. This is a true story which has been meticulously reconstructed by the author through detailed research. Fortunately for us, there were survivors of this disaster and much documentation and first hand accounts are available to which the author has had access. The author has perfectly captured the essence of the times.
Now we have here even extra bonuses! Abby Sallenger has a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Virginia and was the former chief scientist of the U.S. Geological Survey's Center for Coastal Geology. He is currently leading the USGS storm Impact research group. Sound pretty boring, huh? When I first open this book I must admit that my eyes did a bit of a roll and I let out a little moan of despair. Goodness was I wrong! No dry thesis here, no, no, no! No ramblings of a musty academic are to be found in these pages! This work is as much of a page turner as many a novel I have read! This guy, Sallenger, can write! He is also an obvious natural story teller. I can truthfully favorably compare his skills to that of David McCullough and Stephen Ambrose as a writer of popular history. It does not stop there though. While I am far from an expert in Marine Science, History of Louisiana or meteorology, I have, over the past 50 years, done a tremendous amount of reading in these areas and traveled through the geographical areas featured in this work, so when I say that this book is well researched, it is not an empty statement just to fill up space...this writer knows his stuff!
This work is a fascinating read and will give the reader much food for thought on many levels. The earth has been changing for millions of years and our coast lines change at a comparatively fast page. Will we learn from our past? Will we heed the warnings we are receiving via a rising sea level and shrinking ice cap? Personally, I am quite pessimistic in this area, but you need to read this one yourself and make your own mind up.
Bottom Line: A wonderful mixture of history, science and the human condition told by a very skillful writer and story teller.
I enthusiastically recommend that you put this book at the top of your "to read" list. The time you spend reading it will be well worth it!

Extreme Scientists: Exploring Nature's Mysteries from Perilous Places (Scientists in the Field Series) ReviewSometimes the passion and the rewards of a job outweigh its risks as in the case of many "extreme scientists." They all have jobs to do and flirting with danger is just part of it. You just gotta do what you gotta do and in this book you'll be an armchair observer and feel the thrills without a chance of getting hurt unless of course you fall out of your chair with excitement when you dream of having one of these careers!
Paul Flaherty was always fascinated by the weather and knew, even as a young boy, that he was going to be a meteorologist. The blizzard of `78 for a "weather-crazed kid" turned him on, but the first storm that totally mesmerized him was Hurricane Gloria. He went out in the storm . . . "the sand blinded me at times and it was the first time I saw the ocean crash over the seawall." Paul was going to be a hurricane hunter and mark the "absolute center" of them!
Hazel Barton is a microbiologist and her quest takes her underground in search of some of the world's "tiniest inhabitants." Her specialty is looking for "extremophiles," microbes that can survive under the harshest of conditions. When she was a teenager, a biology assignment was to grow microbes in a petri dish using anything from her body, say like dandruff. "The next day, this gross yellow snotty thing grew, and it was just amazing to me . . . From that point on, I knew I wanted to do microbiology." Now the Cave Woman forges into the unknown beneath the Earth in search of microbes.
Steve Sillett was like a lot of kids. He loved climbing trees. When he was in college, he "studied organisms that live in trees" and then became "fascinated with forest canopies," the stuff that grows at the top of trees. Now Steve was made of all the right stuff to become a botanist. He was the first scientist to climb to the top of the redwoods and the community he saw up there astounded him. He even found "wandering salamanders living in the soils high in the crowns of the redwoods." Amazing, isn't it?
I found this book to be wildly fascinating as will its intended audience. The text is lively and engaging and is peppered with interesting photographs. There are several "oh, wow!" moments every few pages. There are numerous informative sidebars throughout the book and a "Quick Questions" section at the end of each chapter about each scientist. In the back of the book there is a glossary of "Trailblazing Terms," an index and additional recommended books, DVDS and website resources. Are you interested in being an extreme scientist? Tempest ReviewI really enjoyed this book. I cold not put it down. I liked the theory about the Tempest. I hope to hear more from this author. I would reccomend this book to Young adult and adult readers.
First we have Janelle who you can't help but root for. She moves to Florida and all of a sudden she is very strong and strange things are happening to her when she touches ocean water. She has a birth right that her mother expects her to follow through with but she does not want to. When she moves to Flordia it happens to be during Hurricane Gary.Then we meet Gary who lives with his Guardian. He is sixteen. And happens to come out of the eye of the Hurricane. He ends up in a hospital and on the run from his guardian. Where he seems to run into Janelle alot.
This story has love, action, adventure. Alittle bit of everything. I could not get the story out of my mind when I was not reading it. eXtreme New England Weather ReviewI just got the book and read it cover to cover. I love weather and this book delivered for me. Each chapter has a different type of New England severe weather and I learned a lot about how the weather happens. Then each chapter also has the complete history of storms here in the area, and it went back into the 1800s.
There are also lots of people's stories in the book, including many of the TV weather guys and gals that I grew up watching (and still do).
If you like weather and storms I would highly recommend this book, it's a home run.eXtreme New England Weather OvervieweXtreme New England Weather is a pictorial chronicle of the events surrounding the greatest storms to hit New England since 1888. SEVERE AND HAZARDOUS WEATHER: AN INTRODUCTION TO HIGH IMPACT METEOROLOGY - TEXTBOOK ONLY ReviewAs an earth and atmospheric science professor who specializes in natural hazards, I've seen probably every text available on this subject. For atmospheric hazards in particular, this is the best textbook I've used. It is easily accessible to second year meteorology undergraduates, and could even be somewhat useful in a graduate course. Although the text emphasizes the meteorological science of atmospheric hazards more than the societal impacts, I've found it to be a good balance for a hazardous weather course. This is a substantial textbook with information on nearly all atmospheric hazards, and it is accompanied by a well-produced CD-ROM (and website), which contain a lot of supplemental material and work very well in the classroom. The print size is large and there are many supporting diagrams that are easy to read. My only complaint is the complete lack of discussion of fog, which is a significant natural hazard. Wild Weather: Lightning (Hello Reader Science: Level 4) ReviewI thought this book was very well-illustrated for young children. The charts and tables and diagrams were easy to understand, and attracted interest in the text. This was an important book for me to read with my grandchildren because we live in New Mexico, where lightning is an almost daily event. As with the Floods book in this series, it features a female scientist and young girls in the illustrations, which really helps my granddaughters to relate to the information. The science is clear. My granddaughters really grasped the concepts, and could even use the book to observe our lightning storms. For example, the books says to close your eyes right after a lightning strike and you can see the pattern of the lightning, in miniature, on your eyelids. Each part shows both the experience and research of the author. I could have lived with fewer quotes from Mark Twain and fewer mentions of Mount Washington, but everything else more than makes up for it. A very professional book. Weather (Golden Guide) ReviewThis was one of the original Golden Guides done back in the 50's, along with The Stars, Rocks and Minerals, Birds, North American Trees, and some others. I collected and read just about all of these and it's surprising how much info they got into these little books. Each book is exactly 160 pages, if I remember right. Thus, they have a fixed format, so they have to be very careful about what they select for material since it all has to fit.
These books sold for 75 cents or 95 cents originally. They were great little educational tools when I was a schoolboy, and I could still read them with profit many years later.
