Eric Sloane's Book of Storms: Hurricanes, Twisters and Squalls ReviewThis book which is a reprint of the 1950's version is a good book for the young and beginner storm buffs. some of the material is outdated since it was writted in the 50's but most of the scientific principals are still the same. Advances in technology has rendered the book rather "old" but as I say the past never changed and what was current up to that time in included....So go back to the days before satellite photos and radar and see how storms were forecast. The book covers: Hurricanes, Thunderstorms, Squalls, Fronts, Pressure systems, Tornadoes, Waterspouts, in a very easy to read format.Eric Sloane's Book of Storms: Hurricanes, Twisters and Squalls OverviewWhat triggers a tornado? What can you see in the eye of a hurricane? What's the difference between a thunderbolt and a thunderclap? With his warm, conversational style and more than 100 original illustrations, popular author and artist Eric Sloane explains "elementary meteorology so clearly that the completely uninformed can gain an immediate understanding." - San Francisco Chronicle.

Category 5: The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane ReviewThis book meant a lot to me as my grandparents, great grandfather, and other family members died in the Labor Day Hurricane that destroyed Matecumbe in 1935. Other surviving family members and friends were also documented. The account of the military veterans who were living in tents in Matecumbe was fascinating as well as the personal stories about the people who lived or were visiting Matecumbe on that fateful day, and were reminiscent of the stories my mother recounted to me over the years. This storm forever changed the fabric of the lives of ones left behind. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the Florida Keys.Category 5: The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane Overview

The Children's Blizzard (P.S.) ReviewWe forget sometimes just how vicious nature can be. In hurricanes this year, in 1991's Perfect Storm, the tri-State Tornado in 1925, and the Children's Blizzard of 1888 nature showed what it can do. Of these disasters, the Children's Blizzard is the least well known. Finally we have a book that chronicles this incident.
January 12, 1888 was a nice balmy day, the first after a fairly hard few weeks. Children went off to school without coats and gloves, farmers went out to work on projects they had been putting off.
Then the cold front came through. In three minutes the temperature dropped 18 degrees. A vicious wind blowing heavy snow caused a whiteout that dropped visibility to near zero. By midnight the windhill was down to 40 below zero. By morning (Friday the thirteenth) some 500 people were dead, many of them children trying to get home from school.
1888 was, by our standards, a primative time. There were certainly no satellite imagery put on television by the local weather forecaster. To be sure, there was some indication of a drop in temperature and snow at the weather forecasting office, but extremely limited communications prevented this warning from being widely circulated.
Well researched, well written, this is a book for reading in front of the fire in a strongly built house (the storm ripped the roof off of many schools, exposing the inside to the full fury of the storm) maybe with a hot buttered rum at hand. The Children's Blizzard (P.S.) Overview

Braving the Elements: The Stormy History of American Weather ReviewThere have been many books on weather and climate that havepassed through my hands over the last twenty five years. This is one of the more memorable ones. When my brother comes over for a visit I'll go to the bookshelf, pull thisvolume down and read page after page to him. Why? Well, quite simply David Laskin condensed the American climateinto a slender volume that reads like a good novel. Merging modern meteorological understanding and historical research he brings alive the shock European settlers feltwhen they experienced the frigid North American winters andblistering summers. He introduces the reader to theologicalmeteorology, nationalist meteorology, and plain old badmeteorology, all in a style designed to excite and educate the reader."BRAVING THBraving the Elements: The Stormy History of American Weather Overview

Rains All the Time: A Connoisseur's History of Weather in the Pacific Northwest ReviewI loved this book! I wish it was available for Kindle so I could keep a copy around, the only copy I've ever found was in the library.
It's a nice "social history of weather" as the blurb puts it. I found it engaging, and not nearly as dry as I expected for a book about weather.Rains All the Time: A Connoisseur's History of Weather in the Pacific Northwest Overview
Here is the first social history of the weather in this notoriouslywet region--not just how damp it is, but what all of this extravagantweather does to the souls who have endured, cursed, and worshiped it.

The Ravaging Tide: Strange Weather, Future Katrinas, and the Coming Death of America's Coastal Cities ReviewThis is a highly emotional work. Mike Tidwell predicted the disasters of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita several years before they happened, and he is justifiably angry that his warnings were not heeded. In The Ravaging Tide Tidwell expands on his earlier work to explain why human activities such as building levees actually increased the destruction at New Orleans, and to warn that other coastal areas now face the same sort of threat.
At times Tidwell waxes somewhat repetitive, making the same point over and over again, but this stems from the overwhelming frustration he feels over public and government inaction. He also relies heavily on secondary sources such as Jared Diamond's Collapse (to which he refers repeatedly) so that those of us who have read that work feel Tidwell's own work is little more than a condensed version of other books.
Tidwell is strongest when he concentrates on explaining how so much of what we face from climate change can be alleviated or even avoided through common sense measures, such as using more energy efficient appliances or requiring energy using companies to upgrade to already existing and far more environment friendly technology. He is also at his most eloquent when condemning the fecklessness of the Bush Administration on energy policy and climate change.
Tidwell's work, like those of Jared Diamond, Tim Flannery, Eugene Linden, and Elizabeth Kolbert, should be read by everyone concerned for the future of our world. The Ravaging Tide: Strange Weather, Future Katrinas, and the Coming Death of America's Coastal Cities Overview

Eric Sloane's Weather Book ReviewI didn't realize we had inherited a copy of this book from my father-in-law until I found it rather late in the semester I took Meteorology. I read it cover-to-cover while studying for the final and managed a 'B' which for me on a science topic was AWESOME. Eric Sloane's simplistic explanations and drawings helped this non-science major grasp some of the tougher concepts.
The only time I really NOTICED how old it is was when he mentioned how the earth would appear if one were to take a trip into space in a suit made of air -- we hadn't landed on the moon when this was written. No mention of ozone or the top two levels of the atmosphere either but, hey, who knew they were there in 1949?Eric Sloane's Weather Book OverviewSloane instructs readers how to glean climate information by "reading" such natural phenomena as winds, skies, and animal sounds. A beautifully illustrated and practical treasure trove of enlightening lore for outdoorsmen, farmers, sailors, and anyone who has ever wondered whether to take an umbrella when leaving the house. 87 illustrations.

Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne ReviewA great book about a great lady. Although there was nothing disclosed in the book that I didn't already know, it was a thoroughly facinating read and I couldn't put the book down until I had completed it. I did discover that there was an album released named "Lena Horne- Now". I have every record that Lena released except for this one and I would love to have it. I understand that it is an album of protest songs during the civil rights era but I don't think that it's out on CD. We will probably never understand or know what Lena's motivation truly was but whatever it was, it honed an entertainer that could interpret a love song in a way that has not been and will never be matched by any other. The original and only "Look" but "Don't Touch" Lady reigned supreme and lived long enough to laugh at those forces that attempted to stifle her and her talent. One thing I wish had been contained in the book was the comment of the stripper arrested in London while Lena was playing there. She said to the authorities - "I don't know why you are arresting me when Lena Horne playing down the street has more sex in one finger than I have in my entire body". Happy Birthday Lena and God Bless. We owe you a great debt of gratitude. By the way, Gavin, the cover photo doesn't do the great Lady Justice.Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne Overview
