Kingfisher Knowledge: Endangered Planet ReviewThis is a very informative book on the environment. The first chapter teaches us about life on earth and the things that we need to live. The next chapter tells us about threats to the earth such as population growth, the greenhouse effect and air pollution. The third and final chapter is all about things that we can do to help protect the earth such as conserving resource, recycling, and wildlife protection. What did you like or not like about the book?
I liked the fact that at the end of each chapter has a section called Go Further. This section features vocabulary words, websites, and booklists that kids can look for to learn more.
Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?
This is a great book for kids ages 8-11 interested in ecology. They will enjoy the mix of pictures and useful information. The book would even make a great resource for report writing

Trapped ReviewScotty just wants to go home the Tuesday morning school is canceled due to the snow piling up outside. But his friends Jason and Pete convince him to stay a little longer to work in the shop, just until four o'clock when Jason's dad will pick them up. But the school slowly empties and the storm gets worse, and as the hours stretch into the evening, it becomes clear that no one is coming.

Sevens teens are stuck in the high school in the worst blizzard in a century, and no one knows that they're there. At first, it's not too bad--they have access to plenty of food and they can wait it out. But then the power and the heat go out, and the snow continues to pile higher and higher, compromising the building . The snow has them trapped inside, but even the building isn't safe anymore--will it be too late for Scotty and his friends?

Trapped is one of those gripping and chilling reads that will make you question just how likely you would be able to survive if thrust into the same situation. It's quite a spectacular story of survival, but it's very well-described, showing that Northrop really thought this situation through inside and out. His writing also shows that he really understands teens; the attitudes, the feelings, and the interactions are all done very well, and the emotions and tensions that everyone feels due to their entrapment and despair are all very realistic. Northrop also makes really good use of foreshadowing as Scotty alludes to some fatal consequences of the storm at the beginning of the story, making the book seem a bit foreboding before the snow even really begins to fall. The ending was powerful and abrupt, but it does leave you wondering about the fate of so many people, most of which aren't revealed, or are left up to the reader's imagination. This is a quick, unsettling read that will be easy to get into, but not so easy to leave once you've finished.Trapped Overview

Carl's Snowy Afternoon ReviewHaving a Rottie Service Dog who pulls me around in my wheelchair the Carl books have been wonderful to read with the grandchildren though I confess that when we read together I tell the little ones the dog's name is Gunter. What an excellent series with wonderful life like illustrations that allow the reader to craft the story to the needs and understanding of the child being read to. Storm Runners Book 2: The Surge ReviewBy This Kid Reviews Books! Find me on the web!
You may think that if you're a kid in the middle of a hurricane - your bus crashed, you nearly drowned, you survived an alligator attack, and everything is flooding - that things can't get much worse, right? Wrong. Chase, Nicole, and Rashawn thought the answer was "right."

Chase, his Dad and, Tomas, his Dad's partner, travel to where natural disasters happen and make their living by helping to rebuild after the disaster happens. Chase's father always made sure he was away from the center of the disasters, but this time the storm shifted! Now Chase and his friends, Nicole and Rashawn are in the middle of it! They thought they were safe when they reached Nicole's house but her family owns a farm but this is no ordinary farm. It is a farm where Nicole's family keeps their circus animals when they are not traveling with the circus and now some of the animals are loose. An angry leopard, that could kill them with a pounce, is running amuck and a lion that just mauled its trainer is loose, too. To top things off, the SURGE from lake water is flooding the farm. They are cold, wet, hungry, hurt and may be cat food! Will they survive the hurricane?

This book is the 2nd book in the series and it was even better than the first one (Storm Runners)! The 3rd book is called "Eruption" and it will be published March 12, 2012 (AHK! TOO LONG TO WAIT!). I like Tomas the best because he seems like a great friend, especially to John and Chase Masters (Tomas is John's best friend and business partner). I recommend "The Surge" to fans of adventure, action, thrills, and Roland Smith. The book is very suspenseful and you never exactly know what's going to happen next! I already pre-ordered my copy of Eruption, I'm not going to tell you how Chase's day gets EVEN worse but I'll give you a hint -think VOLCANO!

After reading a bunch of Mr. Smith's books (Legwork, Cryptid Hunters, Tentacles, The Storm Runners Series) Roland Smith has become one of my favorite authors. I am going to read some more of his older books!
Storm Runners Book 2: The Surge OverviewMaster of middle-grade adventure Roland Smith returns with a second installment in this fast-paced action series.
Chase and his friends Nicole and Rashawn have just survived Hurricane Emily, the storm of the century, but their troubles are just beginning. Though they've made it to the safety of Nicole's family's farm -- the winter home of the Rossi Brothers Circus -- the flood waters are rising and they need to reach higher ground. The circus's lions have escaped their cages, and a mean and unpredicable leopard is also on the loose. And then, of course, there's the problem of the wildlife preserve next door! Have Chase and his friends lived through a terrifying night only to face a new danger?

The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue ReviewI started reading this book, and a day and half later I finished it. I couldn't put this book down and it's an incredible story. I'm not usually into stories like this, but it was tastefully done, quick, to the point and the story was not exaggerated. It gives us a look into what our Service men and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard (if I forgot anyone I apologize), really go through on a daily basis in protecting everyone in this country and how dangerous it can be at times. I highly recommend reading it. You won't be disappointed. The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue Overview

H.A.A.R.P.S FURY (Bryson McGann Novels) ReviewWhen I found out about the HAARP Project in Alaska, I was hoping someone would write a novel about it. Wiliam Beck has done that with exceptional style. A suspensful, intriguing mystery awaits the reader. Beck's style lies somewhere between Clancy and Cussler and it does not disappoint! Great characters and a believable premise won't let you put it down until you turn the last page. A potential for a blockbuster!H.A.A.R.P.S FURY (Bryson McGann Novels) OverviewHidden in the remote reaches of northwestern Alaska, the H.A.A.R.P. Project is now complete. Its true intent is known only to a small contingent of high-ranking military officials. When this team arrives to observe testing of the ‘black-ops' project, their unforeseen discovery yields numerous questions that offer no answers. The only clue left behind are four letters scrawled in blood at the mysteriously deserted compound. A decade later, Bryson McGann, employed by the National Earth Seas Science Agency, finds himself involved in an undersea mining project of an ore with great military potential. Ruthless Canadian businessman, Fletcher Durnulqc, holds the key to its extraction. An alluring woman, and a nearly fatal underwater accident, leads McGann unexpectedly to a chance meeting with Durnulqc at his estate.Threads begin to unravel, as abnormal and malevolent weather patterns emerge globally, unprecedented in their destruction and chaos. Could Durnulqc be involved and linked to the H.A.A.R.P. Project's demise? McGann finds himself pitted in a race against time that, if played out, will forever change the face of the planet and cost the lives of millions.

Extreme Scientists: Exploring Nature's Mysteries from Perilous Places (Scientists in the Field Series) ReviewSometimes the passion and the rewards of a job outweigh its risks as in the case of many "extreme scientists." They all have jobs to do and flirting with danger is just part of it. You just gotta do what you gotta do and in this book you'll be an armchair observer and feel the thrills without a chance of getting hurt unless of course you fall out of your chair with excitement when you dream of having one of these careers!
Paul Flaherty was always fascinated by the weather and knew, even as a young boy, that he was going to be a meteorologist. The blizzard of `78 for a "weather-crazed kid" turned him on, but the first storm that totally mesmerized him was Hurricane Gloria. He went out in the storm . . . "the sand blinded me at times and it was the first time I saw the ocean crash over the seawall." Paul was going to be a hurricane hunter and mark the "absolute center" of them!
Hazel Barton is a microbiologist and her quest takes her underground in search of some of the world's "tiniest inhabitants." Her specialty is looking for "extremophiles," microbes that can survive under the harshest of conditions. When she was a teenager, a biology assignment was to grow microbes in a petri dish using anything from her body, say like dandruff. "The next day, this gross yellow snotty thing grew, and it was just amazing to me . . . From that point on, I knew I wanted to do microbiology." Now the Cave Woman forges into the unknown beneath the Earth in search of microbes.
Steve Sillett was like a lot of kids. He loved climbing trees. When he was in college, he "studied organisms that live in trees" and then became "fascinated with forest canopies," the stuff that grows at the top of trees. Now Steve was made of all the right stuff to become a botanist. He was the first scientist to climb to the top of the redwoods and the community he saw up there astounded him. He even found "wandering salamanders living in the soils high in the crowns of the redwoods." Amazing, isn't it?
I found this book to be wildly fascinating as will its intended audience. The text is lively and engaging and is peppered with interesting photographs. There are several "oh, wow!" moments every few pages. There are numerous informative sidebars throughout the book and a "Quick Questions" section at the end of each chapter about each scientist. In the back of the book there is a glossary of "Trailblazing Terms," an index and additional recommended books, DVDS and website resources. Are you interested in being an extreme scientist? If so you might want to take a close look at this book!Extreme Scientists: Exploring Nature's Mysteries from Perilous Places (Scientists in the Field Series) Overview

Overboard: A True Blue-water Odyssey of Disaster and Survival ReviewThe misery, sea sickness, cold, terror and fight to survive offshore sailors sometimes experience is captured in this book about this 45' boat sailing to Bermuda from Connecticut in early May, 2005. The 65 year old captain had made 48 round trips to Bermuda and he and the boat could not be more experienced. The captain even taught offshore sailing! He and his first mate had made many passages together and on this trip took 3 people looking to increase their offshore experience. Did they ever! The boat got into the storm of their lives that sank or damaged several other boats. They were half way to Bermuda when the storm hit, well out of Coast Guard helo range. Will the boat sink? Will they all survive or will any survive?
Having raced to Bermuda three times I can identify with this captain and crew, and could not put the book down. It is an extremely will written true suspense and survival story. For serious sailors there are many lessons to be learned or relearned from the fight for survival they experienced.Overboard: A True Blue-water Odyssey of Disaster and Survival Overview

Snow Bound ReviewSnowbound centers around the story of two isolated teens, Cindy Reichert and Tony Laporte, who happen to find each other and become stuck in the snow after a storm hits. Tony is a spoiled kid who is a little conceited and feels as though he should have things his way. Cindy is a little self-concious about her self worth, and does not seem to understand the right way to feel better about who she is. When Tony gets upset with his parents for not letting him keep a dog that he found, he decides to skip school and "steal" the family car to look for the dog. Along the way, he picks up Cindy, who is hitchhiking because her bus is late. From there the clashing of their personalities becomes apparent, and eventually, after they get stuck, they have to learn how to get along to survive in the snow.
Although a bit simplistic, the major essense of Mazer's work is to show how important cooperation is to the element of survival. Will Tony and Cindy use each other's skills to get out of their delimma? Or will they just fight?
Another significant asepct of the book is the issue of self identity and change. Cindy and Tony must figure out their own strengths and personal weaknesses and come to another realization about themselves.
Snow Bound OverviewAt fifteen, Tony Laporte is what many people would call a throughly spoiled kid. He gets away with a lot because his parents want him to have all the things they never had. But when they surprise him by refusing to let him keep a stray dog he has found, Tony decides to teach them a lesson by running off in his mother's old Plymouth. Driving without a license in the middle of a severe snowstorm, he picks up a hitchhiker named Cindy Reichert, an aloof girl who has always had difficulty forming friendships. To impress Cindy, Tony tries to show off his driving skills and ends up wrecking the car in a very desolated area far from the main highway. After spending precious days bickering with each other and waiting for rescue that never comes, they finally realize that their lives are at stake and they must cooperate to survive. The question is--can they survive?

Wide Blue Yonder: A Novel ReviewTelling a cohesive story from the narrative perspective of multiple characters is one of the toughest tricks in fiction. One voice usually outshines the others. Wide Blue Yonder is the glorious exception that proves the rule. All four voices are not only distinctive and wonderful but they balance and inform each other as well, spanning the spectrum from a young girl's teenage ennui to a con man's deepening madness. That Thompson's prose is crisp and often startlingly inventive is icing on a cake that is already deep and rich and completely satisfying.Wide Blue Yonder: A Novel Overview

Braving the Elements: The Stormy History of American Weather ReviewThere have been many books on weather and climate that havepassed through my hands over the last twenty five years. This is one of the more memorable ones. When my brother comes over for a visit I'll go to the bookshelf, pull thisvolume down and read page after page to him. Why? Well, quite simply David Laskin condensed the American climateinto a slender volume that reads like a good novel. Merging modern meteorological understanding and historical research he brings alive the shock European settlers feltwhen they experienced the frigid North American winters andblistering summers. He introduces the reader to theologicalmeteorology, nationalist meteorology, and plain old badmeteorology, all in a style designed to excite and educate the reader."BRAVING THBraving the Elements: The Stormy History of American Weather Overview

Tempest ReviewI really enjoyed this book. I cold not put it down. I liked the theory about the Tempest. I hope to hear more from this author. I would reccomend this book to Young adult and adult readers.
First we have Janelle who you can't help but root for. She moves to Florida and all of a sudden she is very strong and strange things are happening to her when she touches ocean water. She has a birth right that her mother expects her to follow through with but she does not want to. When she moves to Flordia it happens to be during Hurricane Gary. Then we meet Gary who lives with his Guardian. He is sixteen. And happens to come out of the eye of the Hurricane. He ends up in a hospital and on the run from his guardian. Where he seems to run into Janelle alot.
This story has love, action, adventure. Alittle bit of everything. I could not get the story out of my mind when I was not reading it. I hope to see a sequel in the future.Tempest OverviewBook 1 of the Destroyers SeriesSixteen-year-old Janelle never thought the gray spiral birthmark on her arm meant anything special. That is, until she meets Gary, a boy her age with a birthmark exactly like hers. Gary's attractive, brooding, and perfectly normal...except for the fact that he materialized out of a dangerous hurricane right in front of her. Janelle's certain of only one thing. Gary's mark-and hers, too-mean something, but he's reluctant to tell her what. At last she squeezes the truth from Gary about their markings. And the truth is utterly terrifying: Janelle and Gary are more connected to the destructive power of nature than she ever dreamed possible. And learning the truth about herself is only the start of her nightmare. 2010 Amazon Breatkthrough Novel Awards Semifinalist"Meteorology may seem an odd literary motivation, but this novel puts weather at the center of a solid fantasy-adventure."--Publishers Weekly

The Horrible Huckleberry Hex Review
Jordan Davis, along with his sisters, Celeste and Tiffany, and his baby brother, Danny, are going on a camping trip with their Aunt Desiree. It is the first time that they have gone camping and they are very excited. Alani M'echel Weathers, in The Horrible Huckleberry Hex, takes Danny and readers on an unforgettable adventure.
While in the forest, Jordan and his family come across an unusual Huckleberry tree with the sweetest berries. Jordan later learns that adults cannot eat the berries. You will not believe what happens next to Jordan and his family. I found this story to be very funny. I actually did not want the story to end. At the end of each chapter, the author included very simple recipes for berries that I am sure young readers will find fun to make.

Rains All the Time: A Connoisseur's History of Weather in the Pacific Northwest ReviewI loved this book! I wish it was available for Kindle so I could keep a copy around, the only copy I've ever found was in the library.
It's a nice "social history of weather" as the blurb puts it. I found it engaging, and not nearly as dry as I expected for a book about weather.Rains All the Time: A Connoisseur's History of Weather in the Pacific Northwest Overview

Abigail: The Breeze Fairy (Rainbow Magic: The Weather Fairies, No. 2) ReviewThis is the second series of "Rainbow Magic" fairy books written by Daisy Meadows, picking up where the seven-part Rainbow Fairies series left off. These books are innocent and engaging, focusing on two young girls, Kirsty and Rachel, who meet while on vacation with their parents, and are drawn into the magical world of the fairies, who are in conflict with the mischievous Jack Frost. The structure of this series is nearly identical to the first: the girls are given a quest in which they must help seven fairies (each with sparkles aplenty and cute, super-girly outfits and princess-y names such as Hayley, Heather, Iris, Amber and Iris... ) who have been bothered by Jack and his goblin helpers. In each book they complete one part of the quest and meet one new fairy.
It is important to know going in that these books are interconnected -- each individual volume ties in with the others, so you will want to start with book #1, then go on to #2, etc. The plots are not very complicated, but they do make reference to each other, and the idea is to read them all together.
The other thing to know is that these books are not very scary or troubling - there is action, but no violence and not much real danger (the goblins are easily beaten, and not very frightening) so if you are looking for longer narratives for young kids to read, but don't want anything disturbing, this series is good option. One criticism is that the books are pretty WASP-y, and while a couple of the fairies might be seen as Asian, basically the entire series takes place in an all-white, middle-class world, populated with thin, blonde girls and a few brunettes. Other than that, though, this is a good series for families looking for light, engaging, age-appropriate stories. Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest ReviewI have read several accounts about the 1996 disaster on Everest, and was eager to read Beck weather's version. I think the book can be divided into three parts: an account of his climb (Part I), the story of his recovery (Part II), and how the event has changed his life and given him new perspective (Part III). Part I was enthralling, although I was somewhat disappointed that it did not contain more detail as seen through his eyes. Part II was very slow and agonizing reading. I am glad that I stuck with it as I found Part III somewhat redeeming. The organization of the book is frustrating. Certainly, it was worthwhile to hear other perspectives from Beck's family and friends, but there could have been a better way to incorporate this information other than sticking quotes in places that often times seemed not to make sense. If you a a true Everest addict, this is a must read. But if you are looking for something as well written as Krakauer's INTO THIN AIR, then this is not the book for you.Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest Overview

Hayley The Rain Fairy (Rainbow Magic, The Weather Faries #7) ReviewWe've been struggling for a way to get my daughter to read now that she's run out of Junie B. Jones books. The Weather Fairies books have done the trick. She seems to enjoy reading again for the first time in half a year or more.
I have to say I haven't read any of the Weather Fairies myself but I caught my twelve-year-old son reading the series because his sister had obviously liked it. He said he wanted to read more, too.Hayley The Rain Fairy (Rainbow Magic, The Weather Faries #7) OverviewFairyland is home to the seven Weather Fairies!Along with Doodle the rooster and his magical feathers, they bring all of the weather to Fairyland. But when evil Jack Frost and his goblins steal the feathers, the weather turns wacky. It's up to the Weather Fairies to fix it -- fast!
Rachel and Kirsty have only one magic feather left to find, and it belongs to Hayley the Rain Fairy. But with a flood in full flow, will they ever reach it?
Find the final feather in this book and fix the weather in Fairyland!
