So Terrible a Storm: A Tale of Fury on Lake Superior ReviewThis is a remarkable, well researched book, written in such a way that one can almost feel the horror of that awful storm of 1905. I can only imagine what those poor men experienced with the high waves, strong wind, blowing snow, and being wet and almost frozen out on that lake. It takes a special breed of men to be able to do this work.I did notice a couple editing errors of dates, however. One on page 243 which said Edward Honnor's son was born on 3/2/1947 instead of 1847. And another date on page 252 that states that the Corey was put into service in June of 2005 instead of, I presume, 1905. Small matters of little consequence in this terric book.So Terrible a Storm: A Tale of Fury on Lake Superior Overview
"Not since Sebastian Junger in ThePerfect Storm has a writer captured so well the fury of the seas asCurt Brown." —The Maritime Executive

Ninth Ward ReviewIn a novel for younger readers, Jewel Parker Rhodes tells the story of thirteen-year-old Lanesha, a girl who lives in New Orleans' Ninth Ward pre-Katrina with a grandmotherly lady she calls Mama Ya-Ya. The relationship between elderly woman and child, while not of blood, is one bound in spirit and love. With her roots in the old voodoo ways, Mama Ya-Ya combines a nurturing presence with the wisdom of her years; in fact, it was Mama Ya-Ya who delivered Lanesha when the girl's mother died in childbirth. As well as Mama Ya-Ya, it isn't uncommon for Lanesha to see ghosts, among them her mother, and others who wander the streets of New Orleans, a city with a particularly rich cultural history. As Katrina approaches, Mama Ya-Ya senses something more than a storm, though her weary soul cannot see clearly what is ahead. As the old lady dreams, Lanesha takes over, preparing for the hurricane, boarding windows, preparing food.
There is an almost allegorical sense of the old giving way to the new in this poignant tale, albeit with an uncertain future. An avid student who dreams of building bridges, Lanesha's curiosity is insatiable, but it is her compassion and bravery that will inspire young readers, the spiritual ties between generations and the capacity to entertain the extraordinary. The author clearly loves this city and its wealth of history and stories, however it may have been damaged by Katrina and its shameful aftermath. And she writes with the same fluid grace and turn of phrase that has distinguished her adult novels. Lanesha's world may have changed with Katrina's devastation, but she is truly a child of Mama Ya-Ya's heart, buoyed by her appetite to taste the world and her appreciation of others, real or imagined. Luan Gaines/2010.

Trapped ReviewScotty just wants to go home the Tuesday morning school is canceled due to the snow piling up outside. But his friends Jason and Pete convince him to stay a little longer to work in the shop, just until four o'clock when Jason's dad will pick them up. But the school slowly empties and the storm gets worse, and as the hours stretch into the evening, it becomes clear that no one is coming.

Sevens teens are stuck in the high school in the worst blizzard in a century, and no one knows that they're there. At first, it's not too bad--they have access to plenty of food and they can wait it out. But then the power and the heat go out, and the snow continues to pile higher and higher, compromising the building . The snow has them trapped inside, but even the building isn't safe anymore--will it be too late for Scotty and his friends?

Trapped is one of those gripping and chilling reads that will make you question just how likely you would be able to survive if thrust into the same situation. It's quite a spectacular story of survival, but it's very well-described, showing that Northrop really thought this situation through inside and out. His writing also shows that he really understands teens; the attitudes, the feelings, and the interactions are all done very well, and the emotions and tensions that everyone feels due to their entrapment and despair are all very realistic. Northrop also makes really good use of foreshadowing as Scotty alludes to some fatal consequences of the storm at the beginning of the story, making the book seem a bit foreboding before the snow even really begins to fall. The ending was powerful and abrupt, but it does leave you wondering about the fate of so many people, most of which aren't revealed, or are left up to the reader's imagination. This is a quick, unsettling read that will be easy to get into, but not so easy to leave once you've finished.Trapped Overview

Knockdown : The Harrowing True Story of a Yacht Race Turned Deadly ReviewI've read this book, I've read all the others on this race, and I've sailed a number of Sydney-Hobarts.
We call the races "Hobarts", not "SydHobs" as Dugard suggests.
The '98 race was not easy - we had over 70 knots of wind across our deck and seas of over 20 meters, so no-one would ever suggest it was easy - but nor should it become a vehicle for an opportunist to score a few quick bucks by capitalising on the drama which others experienced, unless it is done professionally. This book just doesn't meet the grade.
It is unfortunate that Dugard obviously wrote his book with very little knowledge of sailing (let alone Ocean Racing in storm conditions), or of the race. I'm not sure he has even visited Australia, and suspect the research may have been limited to copies of Press reports and a few phone calls to friends in Sydney. You don't get that knowledge through reading books, nor as a passenger. You only get it by being there, and having the responsibility of delivering your boat and crew against the challenges thrown up by the weather.
Certainly given that ocean racing is about judgement calls in a context of nature at its harshest level, only those who are on the water in command of a craft carrying 15 or so other people, who are having to face the elements first hand and in real time, can evert know what it is like. Because sailing in these conditions is not something you can learn out of a text book, it is not something that is mechanical or formula driven - it is about real calls and real delivery in a real situation.
Dugard hasn't done it. If he hasn't done it he is not qualified in my view, but is quite probably what we call in Australia an armchair expert.
From a point of view of credibility, there are simply too many factual errors in the book, starting from virtually the first page.
Some of the errors are appalling, and not simply in the text - even one shot showing the stern of Helsal II is captioned suggesting we are looking at the bow. If the author can't tell the difference between bow and stern, how can he be relied upon to make comment or judgement about how the boats and crews performed or should perform under arduous conditions.
Its like the old Vietnam Veterans joke - you weren't there, so you wouldn't know....
An alternative book on the same race is that by Rob Mundle (A Fatal Storm). A better book, more detailed, more objective, and more accurate, compiled from interviews with a wide range of skippers and crews (and he published the interviews themselves), brilliant photos by Richard Bennett, and written by a man who has sailed a few Hobarts himself, so who knows what the journey down the racetrack is really like.Knockdown : The Harrowing True Story of a Yacht Race Turned Deadly Overview

The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue ReviewI started reading this book, and a day and half later I finished it. I couldn't put this book down and it's an incredible story. I'm not usually into stories like this, but it was tastefully done, quick, to the point and the story was not exaggerated. It gives us a look into what our Service men and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard (if I forgot anyone I apologize), really go through on a daily basis in protecting everyone in this country and how dangerous it can be at times. I highly recommend reading it. You won't be disappointed. The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue Overview

Fatal Forecast: An Incredible True Tale of Disaster and Survival at Sea ReviewIf you liked "The Perfect Storm," you'll love "Fatal Forecast."
Michael J. Tougias' book is a gripping page-turner about fishermen fighting for their lives amid a severe storm off the New England coast.
Tougias' taut storytelling puts the reader in the middle of the action. Like the best survival stories, you can feel yourself in the characters' place, trying to figure what to do next.
I also like that Tougias includes related stories of fishing boat disasters (and near-disasters).
I do have one small complaint. This book, like many of this type, includes a batch of pictures in the middle. I suppose it's cheaper to print the photos altogether like this rather than insert them at the appropriate place in the story. But in this case, if you look at the pictures (and what reader wouldn't?), some of them give away the ending of the book.
That said, it's still a great story. Allow yourself plenty of time when you pick up "Fatal Forecast" -- it's hard to put down.Fatal Forecast: An Incredible True Tale of Disaster and Survival at Sea Overview

AMC Guide to Winter Hiking and Camping: Everything You Need to Plan Your Next Cold-Weather Adventure ReviewIt covers essentially everything you need to know for winter hiking and camping - wear, gear, food, drink, first aid, trip planning, etc. Though it apparently targets beginners, it is a pleasant and informative read for experienced hikers. I did quite some winter hiking summiting many peaks in New England before this book was published. Reading this book still expanded my knowledge. The authors are avid hikers as well as leaders for youth hiking and camping. The content of this book is from their own experience making this book very readable, relevant and practical.
Like many other outdoor educational literature, this book provides very conservative instructions that even people with limited fitness and no experience can follow to minimize risks. The most important factor of safety - physical condition - is not discussed at all.
Overall, it is a very well written book.AMC Guide to Winter Hiking and Camping: Everything You Need to Plan Your Next Cold-Weather Adventure OverviewMany people think of hiking and camping as warm-weather activities, but every adventurer should experience the outdoors in winter. The sparkle of new-fallen snow on a tree's boughs, the spectacular panorama of white mountaintops, and the invigorating chill of the morning air are just some of the rewards of hiking and camping in the winter months. This comprehensive guide by Lucas St. Clair and Yemaya Maurer will help you plan a great trip with plenty of practical advice that emphasizes preparation, safety, outdoor stewardship, and fun. You'll learn when to go, what latest gear and clothing to bring, and the essentials of staying warm and dry. Also included are sections on navigation and what to eat while hiking in winter weather. Special consideration is given to the rapidly changing weather conditions in the Eastern US. The Winter Camping Handbook: Wilderness Travel & Adventure in the Cold-Weather Months, Updated Edition Review
I've emphasized the hiking part of the subtitle, because over half the book covers traveling on ice and snow, not just staying in place at a camp. Both stopping and going are important of course, and this book is an excellent survey of both subjects.
There is information about proper clothing for hiking, skiing and snowboarding, including equipment for snow shoeing and climbing over rocky terrain. Another chapter covers navigating, food and nutrition and traveling in groups.
Gorman is especially good on details; choosing a sleeping bag involves understanding quality of fill, shape, size both in action and on the ground, and temperature ratings. Water is a major consideration; we emit at least a pint of water sleeping in the cold.
Gorman recently gave an interesting interview to the "Concord Monitor" which introduces beginners to winter camping. High points include:
"The first time out winter camping, it is not such a bad idea to not go really far out into the back country. Going to a state park or national forest campground just off the road is a good way to shake things down, do everything right before going on a longer trip.
"During that first close outing, do jumping jacks or mild exercises - stretches, too - to warm up before getting into that sleeping bag. Don't worry, campgrounds are less crowded in winter, so don't be shy. Trying out that new stove? Use it in the evening to make yourself a hot water bottle, close it securely and place it in the bottom of the sleeping bag as added warmth. Then heat that water in the morning for coffee.
"Wear a cap to sleep, and be sure your clothing is dry. Feel comfortable layering clothing. That's a natural thermostat and can help you maintain your comfort level.
"Before you go, learn to plan ahead. In winter, many public parks and campgrounds are closed. Those that remain open often have limited services - like no water - and some require contacting the park before venturing in. Private campgrounds tend to have more services."
Gorman's book is an revised and updated edition of Gorman's highly regarded Amc Guide to Winter Camping: Wilderness Travel and Adventure in the Cold-Weather Months. I've looked at the glowing Amazon reviews of the previous edition. This revised edition is significantly better.
Gorman is an enthusiast; join him if you want to "explore the winter wilderness and experience the joys of winter."

The Weather-Resilient Garden: A Defensive Approach to Planning & Landscaping ReviewI picked this book up as we deal with the worst drought on record in the Chicagoland/Northern IL area--which is tough on gardeners even in the best years. Smith covers it all in an in-depth, very readable manner. For a newcomer to gardening (wherever you may live), there is plenty of information on specific conditions divided by chapter (ex.--heat, cold, drought, flood...whoops, we can have that all in one day around here!). You can turn to a section to find out how to deal with a situation immediately. There is also plenty of discussion on plants and types of plants suitable for a variety of locales. Not simply a weather-related tome, the author also sprinkles in good information on dealing with animal damage, providing habitats for birds, and lists (including a 100-plant glossary) of plants for specific conditions.
For experienced gardeners, there is excellent scientific information, historical discussions (no, Jethro Tull isn't simply Ian Anderson's band...), and techniques that may be new to you.
Good for browsing or curling up with by a toasty fire in the winter. Whether you need help now or want to learn more in general, this book will become a well-thumbed reference.
A great addition to your library. The Weather-Resilient Garden: A Defensive Approach to Planning & Landscaping Overview

Surviving Cold Weather: Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness ReviewThe best part about this survival guide is Davenport's descriptions of "improvised" items. Most people don't plan to be in a survival situation in freezing temperatures, and may not have the proper equipment. He teaches you how to use survival items you have purchased and may have with you (such as an avalanche beacon or a signal flare), but also what to do in a situtation in which you don't have what you need (improvising snowshoes, stick and shadow compass, etc). The section on constructing emergency shelters gave detailed instructions for many options depending on what resources are available - trees, ice, and/or deep snow. He even provides pictures as proof of his methods. The information on how to obtain food, especially berries, and how to navigate without a map or compass was also extremely helpful. The only disappointing thing for me in this book was the information on animals. Many of the descriptions seemed cut-and-pasted, with really no specific tips on how to avoid polar bear attacks versus brown bears versus pumas.
I bought this book because I live in Alaska and was hoping to learn something that would keep me from becoming one of the many people that do not survive in the wilderness out here because they are unprepared! I bring it with me when I go backpacking or camping, because you never know. I recommend reading this book if you spend time outdoors in cold weather, whether you put yourself in risky situations or not. You'll learn not only how to be prepared but how to stay alive if you are lost or find yourself without adequate transportation, food, or shelter.Surviving Cold Weather: Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness OverviewHow to dress for winter; how to create a campsite and what to use as shelter; how to keep warm How to signal for help with aerial flares, smoke, mirrors, and whistles; finding and purifying water; finding and preparing food; protecting yourself and your supplies from wildlife How to use a map and compass; how to travel on snow and ice with snowshoes, skis, and crampons; how to avoid and deal with avalanches The first in Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness series, Surviving Cold Weather covers the techniques and equipment necessary for surviving in ice and snow. Photos and drawings illustrate gear and techniques. The book covers the five survival essentials--personal protection, signaling, sustenance, navigation, and health--as they relate to the cold. Upcoming books in the series are Surviving Open and Coastal Waters, Surviving the Desert, and Surviving the Jungle.

Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest ReviewI have read several accounts about the 1996 disaster on Everest, and was eager to read Beck weather's version. I think the book can be divided into three parts: an account of his climb (Part I), the story of his recovery (Part II), and how the event has changed his life and given him new perspective (Part III). Part I was enthralling, although I was somewhat disappointed that it did not contain more detail as seen through his eyes. Part II was very slow and agonizing reading. I am glad that I stuck with it as I found Part III somewhat redeeming. The organization of the book is frustrating. Certainly, it was worthwhile to hear other perspectives from Beck's family and friends, but there could have been a better way to incorporate this information other than sticking quotes in places that often times seemed not to make sense. If you a a true Everest addict, this is a must read. But if you are looking for something as well written as Krakauer's INTO THIN AIR, then this is not the book for you.Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest Overview
