Climate (Our Fragile Planet) ReviewClimate is a great book to learn about the climate in one easy to read book. The author does a great job of explaining the details of the causes and effects of the world, and refers to several scientific studies that help put together this wealth of information.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the age group of 6th grade to 12th grade or an adult. This book makes you more aware of all the things we do in our daily lives and how it is effecting our world.
I even asked the author to explain a table to me a little better and it was answered on www.ExplainMyBook.com.Climate (Our Fragile Planet) Overview

Inside Tornadoes (Inside Series) ReviewAs a librarian, I'm always on the lookout for good quality children's nonfiction that isn't dumbed down or overly text dense. This books strikes just the right balance between good quality information [well-written; not too much, nor too little], photos, activities, charts, and even helpful hints for sheltering during a tornado. Basically, it can keep a young reader's attention all the way through. It has some cool fold out pages which work nicely. I especially liked the fold out chart of tornado intensity: pretty cool. I also liked the tornado activity project that you can make with two 2-liter bottles. I would recommend this for readers in 3rd grade through middle school.Inside Tornadoes (Inside Series) OverviewTornadoes are the most violent storms on the planet-as these dramatic photographs and gatefolds vividly reveal. Young readers will get the inside scoop on tornadoes in this electrifying volume, filled with powerful before-and-after images of storm sites. They'll discover what makes a tornado, where they strike, and what scientists discover as they risk their lives driving equipment as close as possible to these storms. With first-person accounts of historic storms, fascinating facts on climate change and its potential effect on tornadoes, and hands-on activities, this book will fascinate curious readers.

Things That Are Most in the World ReviewJust today I used this book to teach a decoding lesson to my first graders. They were captivated by the lively illustrations and quite entertained by the clever humor. This book lends itself well to a quick, low maintenance, yet creative activity. We began to make our own book in a similar fashion. Students completed the sentence, "The _____est thing in the world is ______." They came up with some very creative responses and then illustrated them. We are looking forward to putting our book together right away and sharing it! This book could be used at different levels up through 3rd grade to target a variety of skills.Things That Are Most in the World Overview

Tornado Alert (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) Review...with it's ability to explain this twist of nature at a level young children can understand. I was most impressed with the fact that not only does it describe the scientific aspects of tornado formation in simple terms, it also discusses tornado safety by giving kids several examples of where they might be when a tornado hits and the best place to take cover for each situation. While the publisher lists ages 4-8 as the targeted reading level, I found with our library groups at school that our 9-11 year olds were very interested in it as well.If you have younger children and live in an area where tornadoes are a real threat, I highly recommend using this book to introduce tornado safety.Tornado Alert (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) Overview‘Branley explains these powerful storms in simple terms young children can understand. He describes the funnel cloud and how it forms and [tells] what to do during a tornado. The book ends on a comfortable note, that the idea is not to panic but to know what to do to ensure safety.' -BL. A Reading Rainbow Selection

Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth ReviewEver since I was a child trapped inside by the pouring rain as the remnants of Camille passed over East Tennessee, I have been fascinated by hurricanes. With that in mind, this book was hard to resist. Especially since I had spent many hours watching Dr. Sheets on television. It is pretty obvious though that Jack Williams did most of the writing and for those of us who are not that familiar with the science of meteorology that is a very good thing for this is a very complicated subject and dumbing down is exactly what I needed.
This book is not so much a book about major hurricanes as it is a history of the predicting of hurricanes. From Columbus to the present satellites and Doppler systems this book tells the story of man's attempts to guess what Mother Nature is up to. There is even a chapter about attempts to actually control hurricanes.
Even with the simple way the authors attempted to tell their story I was lost at times but not all too often. For a trained meteorologist this book would probably seem almost childish, but for the average person like myself it is just about right. I still don't completely understand everything about wind sheer, computer models, and latent heat but I am at least familiar with the terms now. From now on, as a hurricane approaches the U.S. coast and I sit there in front of the TV I will have a vague idea of how the computer models work and will know all about the Bermuda high.
The chapter I found the most interesting was the chapter about hurricane Andrew. That is the kind of thing I was actually looking for in this book but even though I only found one chapter of what I had been looking for, I still found this book to be highly informative, interesting, and well written. I imagine that Dr. Sheets could write an entire book on Andrew, and I wish he wouldHurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth Overview

Category 5: The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane ReviewThis book meant a lot to me as my grandparents, great grandfather, and other family members died in the Labor Day Hurricane that destroyed Matecumbe in 1935. Other surviving family members and friends were also documented. The account of the military veterans who were living in tents in Matecumbe was fascinating as well as the personal stories about the people who lived or were visiting Matecumbe on that fateful day, and were reminiscent of the stories my mother recounted to me over the years. This storm forever changed the fabric of the lives of ones left behind. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the Florida Keys.Category 5: The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane Overview

One Day in the Desert (Trophy Chapter Book) ReviewNaturalist Jean Craighead George introduces us to the world of the mountain lion, the road runner, the cactus, the kangaroo rat, the ringtailed cat, the swift fox, the elf owl, the coyote, and the bombadier beetle in this book as she did wolves and caribou in JULIE OF THE WOLVES and peregrine falcons in MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. A young Papago Indian girl named Bird Wing and her mother live in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. This usually arid place is about to fall victim to a terrible thunderstorm and a flash flood. Bird Wing and all the animals of the desert struggle to find shelter before the flood. Some will survive--and some will not. This is a beautiful story about the close connection between human beings and all living things, and the unpredictable ways of nature. Other books in the ONE DAY series that include exciting natural disasters are ONE DAY IN THE ALPINE TUNDRA and ONE DAY IN THE PRAIRIE. There is also the fascinating ONE DAY IN THE WOODS and ONE DAY IN THE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST. And don't forget Jean Craighead George's 80+ stories about nature, like The Thirteen Moons series and THERE'S AN OWL IN THE SHOWER.One Day in the Desert (Trophy Chapter Book) Overview‘A wounded mountain lion moves from his mountain habitat to a Papago Indian hut in Arizona's Sonoran desert during a record-breaking July day. All creation adapts to the blistering heat until a cloudburst causes a flash flood. With a measured yet vivid style, this introduction to desert ecology makes a memorable impact." -SLJ.

Storms (Reading Rainbow Books) ReviewDetailed and thorough descriptions of lightening/thunder storms, tornadoes and hurricanes are given. There is plenty of information about what we know about how the storm is created, the role of electricity in the storm, etc. What people should do if they are caught in a storm so that the risk of personal injury is lessened is also explained in detail. Hail is explained with a wonderful photo of a cross-section of a large hailstone. The damage and injury that hail can do is explained in detail. There are brief descriptions of two types of clouds. Simple rainstorms are not discussed, and not every type of cloud is addressed.
I felt that the author should have included an explanation of how certain storms are regional or more likely to occur in certain areas of North America. Warnings of death, airplane flight issues, and injury are given, so be forewarned if you are reading this to very young readers. There is no mention as to the frequency of the storms, which had my child worried that we'd soon encounter a tornado (even though they are extremely rare in our area of the country and despite the fact that I censored out some of the scarier results of the storms).
NOTE: After I read "Storms" and wrote the above review I read his separate books focused on one topic: "Hurricanes" and "Lightning". The books which focus on one topic are actually more interesting in style of writing, contain more information about where storms hit, details of how dangerous they are or are not, and give many more specific and wonderful photographs. Therefore I prefer the books that focus on one individual topic. "Storms" seems to boil down the information in a way that is not equal to reading the individual books. For this reason I will rate this book a 4, and I rate the individual books a 5.
The photographs are stunning and depict everything covered: from gorgeous lightening to large storm fronts, to hurricanes with the eye visible, to a series of photos of a tornado, going from its' beginning to end. I feel the high quality photographs are key to maintaining the interest level of the child and they help the child understand and remember the information.Storms (Reading Rainbow Books) Overview"A succinct, informative essay illuminated by magnificent photographs. The subject is particularly absorbing, as it highlights the natural drama of a commonly experienced phenomenon....The stunning visual portrayal of storms, accompanied by impressive factual data and clear explanations in crisp prose, is truly compelling."--Horn Book.

The book provides just enough information to keep it interesting for student readers. The pictures are not real, but are realistic. I like how the authors write a note in the beginning of the story inviting the reader to read their book. This book will be appealing for students in the upper elementary grades. Fatal Forecast: An Incredible True Tale of Disaster and Survival at Sea ReviewIf you liked "The Perfect Storm," you'll love "Fatal Forecast."
Michael J. Tougias' book is a gripping page-turner about fishermen fighting for their lives amid a severe storm off the New England coast.
Tougias' taut storytelling puts the reader in the middle of the action. Like the best survival stories, you can feel yourself in the characters' place, trying to figure what to do next.
I also like that Tougias includes related stories of fishing boat disasters (and near-disasters).
I do have one small complaint. This book, like many of this type, includes a batch of pictures in the middle. I suppose it's cheaper to print the photos altogether like this rather than insert them at the appropriate place in the story. But in this case, if you look at the pictures (and what reader wouldn't?), some of them give away the ending of the book.
That said, it's still a great story. Allow yourself plenty of time when you pick up "Fatal Forecast" -- it's hard to put down.Fatal Forecast: An Incredible True Tale of Disaster and Survival at Sea Overview

Hurricane Force: In the Path of America's Deadliest Storms (New York Times) ReviewI've never had to live through a hurricane. Living in the Midwest, I don't see it happening in the near future, and after reading HURRICANE FORCE I can say that I'm glad! If you've ever wondered about the destructive force of these massive storms, this is definitely the book for you.
Although a large portion of the book focuses on the August 2005 arrival of Hurricane Katrina to the Gulf Coast, references are also made to hurricanes dating as far back as the early 1900's. Chapters are also spent on the work done by the National Weather Service in tracking, reporting, and identifying hurricanes, as well as how NWS strategies have changed over the years.
Maps and photos of actual radar images are prevalent throughout the book, tracking the progress of well-known hurricanes such as Katrina, Rita, and Charley. Photos of horrific damage resulting from these hurricanes, especially that of Katrina, are also shown, making the devastation seem that much more personable.
I would recommend HURRICANE FORCE to anyone interested in hurricanes, Katrina in particular, but also to those looking for more insight on how hurricanes form and what causes them to strike where they do. A highly informative book!
