Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth ReviewEver since I was a child trapped inside by the pouring rain as the remnants of Camille passed over East Tennessee, I have been fascinated by hurricanes. With that in mind, this book was hard to resist. Especially since I had spent many hours watching Dr. Sheets on television. It is pretty obvious though that Jack Williams did most of the writing and for those of us who are not that familiar with the science of meteorology that is a very good thing for this is a very complicated subject and dumbing down is exactly what I needed.
This book is not so much a book about major hurricanes as it is a history of the predicting of hurricanes. From Columbus to the present satellites and Doppler systems this book tells the story of man's attempts to guess what Mother Nature is up to. There is even a chapter about attempts to actually control hurricanes.
Even with the simple way the authors attempted to tell their story I was lost at times but not all too often. For a trained meteorologist this book would probably seem almost childish, but for the average person like myself it is just about right. I still don't completely understand everything about wind sheer, computer models, and latent heat but I am at least familiar with the terms now. From now on, as a hurricane approaches the U.S. coast and I sit there in front of the TV I will have a vague idea of how the computer models work and will know all about the Bermuda high.
The chapter I found the most interesting was the chapter about hurricane Andrew. That is the kind of thing I was actually looking for in this book but even though I only found one chapter of what I had been looking for, I still found this book to be highly informative, interesting, and well written. I imagine that Dr. Sheets could write an entire book on Andrew, and I wish he wouldHurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth Overview

Category 5: The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane ReviewThis book meant a lot to me as my grandparents, great grandfather, and other family members died in the Labor Day Hurricane that destroyed Matecumbe in 1935. Other surviving family members and friends were also documented. The account of the military veterans who were living in tents in Matecumbe was fascinating as well as the personal stories about the people who lived or were visiting Matecumbe on that fateful day, and were reminiscent of the stories my mother recounted to me over the years. This storm forever changed the fabric of the lives of ones left behind. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the Florida Keys.Category 5: The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane Overview

Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) ReviewI recently began to pursue a life long interest in learning more about severe weather; it's forecasting and impact on the environment. As my search for materials to help me learn expanded and my research came to its peak, I kept getting the same feedback from all the various web sites and sources. "Pick up anything from Tim Vasquez."
I have looked high and low for anything that didn't require a physics degree to read and I have found that in every single book I have purchased with his name on it. His books have excited me even more about severe weather and led me down the path to becoming a trained spotter with Skywarn. I cannot recommend his books highly enough.
Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) OverviewThe science of forecasting has not changed, but the Internet and new marvels of technology have completely redefined the process. It's not a rare thing for weather hobbyists and National Weather Service forecasters to get a product from the very same site. With more and more charts and tools appearing on the Internet by the week, how do you make sense of the avalanche of weather imagery and data? Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. The WSR-88D doppler radar, in use by the United States weather services, has played a vast part in the weather information revolution. In the Weather Map Handbook, it gets thirty pages packed with the fundamentals and algorithms of the WSR-88D. Much of this information is obscure and nearly impossible to find. From the workings of the Composite Reflectivity product to the exact process used by the Mesocyclone Detection Algorithm to deconstruct a radar scan, any NEXRAD radar product on the Internet can be understood. From the WRF to the NGM, from the GFS to the GEM, each numerical forecast model is revealed in incredible detail. Ensemble forecasts are highlighted. The satellite chapter explains visible, infrared, and water vapor imagery, how it is created, and how to interpret it. Even the METAR, TAF, SYNOP, and radiosonde formats get their own sections, complete with decoding instructions. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more! Whether you're a hobbyist, private forecaster, a professional, or a student, the Weather Map Handbook is the book you can't be without.

Weather Derivative Valuation: The Meteorological, Statistical, Financial and Mathematical Foundations ReviewMany businesses, particularly ones that specialize in energy and agriculture, can be subjected to severe financial impact by changes in the weather. Techniques from financial engineering can be used to manage the financial risk involved in these changes, and are structured as swap, call, and put contracts based on `weather indices'. These financial instruments are referred to as `weather derivatives' and are the subject of this book. The weather indices are typically the `heating degree day' (HDD), and the `cooling degree day' (CDD), but could also be such quantities as precipitation, snowfall, and humidity. The HDD (for a particular day) is usually defined as the maximum difference (bounded below by zero) between a chosen baseline temperature and the average temperature. The CDD is the difference between the average temperature and a baseline (again bounded below by zero).
A perfect weather derivative would be designed so as to eliminate all risk due to the weather. For example, if the temperature is to be the index of choice, then one would like to be able to `hedge' so successfully so as to make, as far as the affected industry is concerned, the weather effectively irrelevant. This of course is not possible, due to the unavailability of perfect forecasts. However, one can enter into weather derivative contracts that will enable the affected industry to manage their weather risk in a manner that that makes use of what can actually be predicted in weather forecasts, with the remaining uncertainty being hedged. Possible lost revenue due to adverse weather can be hedged for example by a weather derivative that will give a revenue stream that is based on the forecast error.
Like all other financial instruments, there will be a cost associated with weather derivative contracts. Within the scope of propriety, the authors have given an excellent introduction to the methodologies used to price weather derivatives, and how to perform risk management of portfolios based on weather derivatives. Since the underlying weather indices are not traded, pricing based on arbitrage is more involved for the case of weather derivatives. The authors though show how arbitrage pricing can be done, and also give in-depth discussion on other pricing strategies, these being classified as `actuarial' and `market-based' pricing. Actuarial pricing, as the name implies, involves calculating the probabilities of all future outcomes of a contract or portfolio of contracts, while market-based pricing is based on the actual prices that are observed in the market. Arbitrage pricing can be done in locations where the option is actively traded. Otherwise, the authors show how a swap contract defined on the index can be used to obtain dynamic hedging. However, they remark that this pricing strategy is not widely done at the time of writing. Actuarial pricing thus dominates the discussions in the book.

The mathematical modeling involved in weather derivatives can be difficult, due in part to the fact that the underlying weather indices are nonstationary, i.e. they are characterized by variations and trends with scales greater than the length of the historical record. In addition, the weather indices exhibit a high degree of autocorrelation. Also, the actual measurement of volatility can be problematic, due to sparse data sets or even the unavailability of data. Further, arriving at a general method for estimating volatility is difficult since the exposure to weather risk is highly variable between different companies.
One method of valuing single contracts discussed early on in the book is called `burn analysis', and can be viewed as a step above a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation. It attempts to value a contract based on how it would have performed in the past. The authors estimate the fair strike for a swap, i.e. the strike that gives an expected value of zero, using burn analysis. This involves using the (detrended) historical index values and the calculation of the mean of this data to estimate the expected index. The authors show how to incorporate `risk loading' to model more closely what is actually going on in the trading of swaps. They also show how to apply the burn analysis to options, calculating the `fair premium' by using the historical pay-offs, with the mean of this data being the expected pay-off.
The most interesting part of the book is the one on arbitrage pricing models. The price charged for a weather contract will be influenced by the possibility of hedging, which is different from actuarial pricing, which is based on diversification. The arbitrage pricing mechanism that the authors discuss is restricted to weather swaps, and they review arbitrage theory both from the standpoint of partial stochastic differential equations and from measure theory. The swaps are all assumed to be linear and based on linear degree days. The authors derive the stochastic differential equations for the swap price to obtain a version of the Black-Scholes equation for weather swaps trading with a premium. They also derive, using a hedging strategy based on forward contracts, the partial differential equation satisfied by the price of the weather option. The solution of this equation gives the arbitrage price, which interestingly turns out to be the same as the actuarial fair price without risk loading. This is due to the absence of drift in the discounted swap price and also the fact that there is no expected loss on the swaps. The authors' algorithm for calculating the arbitrage price for options consists of taking the market swap price to be the expected index, using this to calculate the expected pay-off, and then discounting this quantity to give the arbitrage price. This algorithm is done assuming knowledge of the standard deviation of the settlement index. Their algorithm is interesting, but its validation is not discussed in the book. Readers will have to consult the references for further discussion on this important issue. To gain confidence in the efficacy of the algorithm will of course require it be used in real-life trading or risk management.Weather Derivative Valuation: The Meteorological, Statistical, Financial and Mathematical Foundations OverviewOriginally published in 2005, Weather Derivative Valuation covers all the meteorological, statistical, financial and mathematical issues that arise in the pricing and risk management of weather derivatives. There are chapters on meteorological data and data cleaning, the modelling and pricing of single weather derivatives, the modelling and valuation of portfolios, the use of weather and seasonal forecasts in the pricing of weather derivatives, arbitrage pricing for weather derivatives, risk management, and the modelling of temperature, wind and precipitation. Specific issues covered in detail include the analysis of uncertainty in weather derivative pricing, time-series modelling of daily temperatures, the creation and use of probabilistic meteorological forecasts and the derivation of the weather derivative version of the Black-Scholes equation of mathematical finance. Written by consultants who work within the weather derivative industry, this book is packed with practical information and theoretical insight into the world of weather derivative pricing.

Marine Weather Forecasting Reviewi have three problems with this book: organization & presentation of material, depth of material and quality of the book itself.
i'll start with the quality of the book, as it's easiest to explain. when the meat of the 'forecasting' is based upon you being able to read cloud formations, and the pictures of the cloud formations are in black and white and low resolution, it kind of makes the whole thing moot. if you don't already know what alto stratus clouds look like, you're going to run into some problems trying to identify them after looking at a photo that resembles a sonogram.
next, the depth of the material. the meat of the book comes in a chapter that goes over ways to interpret different cloud formations. the material is presented in forty or so bullet point statements, kind of like "if the sky looks like X, then Y will be the weather". now, i'm not saying that the information presented here is necessarily wrong - it's just not really explained. WHY is this the case, you'll ask yourself repeatedly? or maybe you won't. i guess if you have no desire to see the information justified scientifically, you'll be fine with this. personally, i'd like a little science to back up the guidelines presented. the author does occasionally say things such as, "this happens because there is more moisture in the atmosphere, and as a result the sky is red". however explainations are generally too brief for me to consider them to be of real value.
finally, the organization and presentation of the book. honestly, the book isn't terribly well written. the author kind of jumps right into things going from A to B to C without creating a real flow or structure to the material. I found myself saying things like "why is he suddently presenting this material here?" on several occasions. additionally, many people may find parts of the book completely irrelevent, wishing the author took these pages to further explain the good material he does present within the book.
i'd say make a trip to your library before jumping into this one.Marine Weather Forecasting OverviewHave you ever listened to a weather forecast stating there may be a slight chance of showers but the rain is coming down so hard you are seriously considering a lifejacket while standing on the dock? During such times, one suggestion to the forecaster runs through everyone's mind: "Look out the window!!" That is certainly one of the most accurate methods to forecast the immediate weather. Everyone knows the look of the sky when a thunderstorm or squall is moving in, but few know how to determine what is in store more than a few hours ahead.Frank has taken the mystery out of weather forecasting in his book Marine Weather Forecasting. He explains how to tell more about the weather, for hours and days to come, than any broadcast. But you must know what to look for when you go on deck. The wind, clouds, moon and sun all tell the story and Frank explains how to read these signs.Anyone can understand Frank's detailed descriptions of forecasting and the illustrations add to the ease. CAUTION: After reading this book you may never rely on another broadcast report.Illustrated

Weather: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) ReviewDespite the very bad reviews in here, I decided to go to Barnes and
Noble, took a look at the book, and bought it in there. After moving to Seattle, I wondered why the weather in Northwestern America might be like this, and Katrina desaster was also a motivation for me to want to understand how weather works. And I have no desire to try to understand it in expert level (nor do I have time to do so).
First of all, this book is not for weather majors or experts.
this book is for general readers who don't have a clue about how weather works but want to know. For that purpuse, I haven't found any better book than this. I'm not a geologist or weather expert. So, I can't say how accurate this book is. However this book explains things so well with a lot of beautiful pictures. Saying that this book doesn't have any content, all misinformation, etc. is simply over-exaggerating minor mistakes that any books might have. Go to the bookstore and see it yourself. You will love this book.
Even though you don't like the content for any reason, the beautiful pictures themselves will worth the money. However, there is no reason why casual readers who want to know about whether would not like the contents of this book. Don't let skeptic's over-exaggerated nitpicking discourage your owning this wonderful book.
This is one of the books from which you can learn science without studying, and with pleasure. And you don't even need to have any science background to read this book. All you need is curiosity. As a reader, I thank authors to create this wonderful book.Weather: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) Overview

Images in Weather Forecasting: A Practical Guide for Interpreting Satellite and Radar Imagery ReviewThis book provides the best overall technical discussion of the use of satellite imagery and radar data in weather forecasting. For the weather enthusiast this book may at times be difficult to understand;however, there still is plenty of easy to understand information pertaining to visible, infrared, and water vapor imagery interpretation. The book is richly appointed with color and black and white figures with concise discussions of the meteorological conditions that produce the weather described in the figure. I would especially recommend this book for the serious student of meteorology.Images in Weather Forecasting: A Practical Guide for Interpreting Satellite and Radar Imagery OverviewThis manual presents the meteorology student and operational forecaster with the current techniques for interpreting satellite and radar images of weather systems in mid-latitudes. The focus of the book is the large number of illustrations. Images are matched with conceptual models and weather charts. Written in an image-led mode, rather than in the style of a standard textbook on meteorology, the presentation allows the user to identify and interpret patterns on the images as easily and quickly as possible. Patterns observed in satellite and radar images have been explained in terms of basic archetypal airflows. Examples are presented showing variations on the basic archetypes for many regions. Material for the book has been provided by experts from North America and Europe, and reviewed by people from universities, training establishments of meteorological services and operational forecasters.

Modern Marine Weather ReviewI am a weather buff. I have read a lot of weather books, but this one is definately my favorite. I think it is easy to follow, everything is explained in great detail. So many books leave these details out, so these details are up to the imagination of the reader.
I like the fact that if the author sometimes partially explains a future subject to clarify the one that he is talking about at the moment, but lets you know that he will be talking about it more later. That way the reader knows there will be more detail later and doesn't spend a lot of time figuring it out at the moment. The future subject was only being talked about to clarify the present subject.
I frequently found that while reading other weather books that my thought process was derailed because of lack of detail. I would have to spend time trying to figure out what the author was talking about. Everything is very clear to me with this book.
If a person was to only read one marine weather book, I would recommend this one. It is like a complete weather course, but written in a way that is very easy to understand and remember. This book will be good for the beginner, or the more advanced student. David discusses weather routing nicely.
The reason that I bought this book in the first place is because I've taken other courses and read other books from David Burch. I have enjoyed each one and recommended them to my friends.
Modern Marine Weather OverviewA comprehensive text on how to take weather into account for the planning and navigation of voyages, local or global, using the latest technologies as well as the time-honored skills of maritime tradition, so that your time on the water remains as safe and efficient as possible. Covers practical applications of GRIB files, QuikSCAT wind measurements, and other modern resources. ' "No subject is more important to every sailor than the wind and its direction. Weather Forecasting Handbook (5th Edition) ReviewThis book is the first book to truly go into detail on exactly what goes into professional and non-professional forecasts. The author explains the fundamentals of forecasting while leaving out textbook-style boredom. This book is perfect for beginners who want to learn how to forecast and also veterans who need to brush up. This book explains somewhat hard-to-explain-topics with ease. I am a 4th year meteorology student, and I find the book riveting. Very well researched and extremely thorough, the author is a master at forecasting for the most dangerous area in the world: tornado alley. He knows what he's talking about! Do yourself a favor and buy it. This is the best book on the subject I have ever read, and I have read a lot!!Weather Forecasting Handbook (5th Edition) OverviewThe Information Age has blossomed and now anyone can run a weather center from their own office or home. Unfortunately, nearly all popular weather books are nothing more than essays on the science of meteorology. The Weather Forecasting Handbook breaks this mold by explaining all the latest forecasting principles, techniques, and tools. Basic physical concepts are reviewed, and commonly-employed analysis methods are presented. Then weather systems are explained in terms of their thermal structure, dynamics, and effects. Special problems such as thunderstorms, winter weather, and tropical weather get chapters of their own. Margins are filled with forecasting facts, hard-hitting quotes, education stories, and even a few fun weather jokes. With added emphasis on analysis, visualization, and awareness of model limitations, readers learn to learn tools properly and are always a step ahead. The Weather Forecasting Handbook is a must-have for all meteorology students, advanced weather hobbyists, professionals, weathercasters, storm chasers, sailors, and pilots. Whether you want to know how a short wave works, how to find a front, what isentropic surfaces are, how to analyze a 500-millibar chart, what type of vertical motion to expect around jet streaks, or why a high pressure area is building, the Weather Forecasting Handbook's no-nonsense approach will give you a solid foundation to understanding everyday forecasting problems. This version adds 41 pages and 46 illustrations compared to the previous (fourth) edition. It includes expanded information on numerous topics, especially on the subject of analysis, and adds minor corrections.192 illustrations, 7 x 10", color cover.

Doppler Radar, Satellites, and Computer Models: The Science of Weather Forecasting (Weatherwise) ReviewMany people watch the evening news weather reports each night to find out how the weather will be in their area for the upcoming week. Sometimes they have something they want to do outside, they have a vacation coming and want to know if the weather will be good, or if serious storms are coming they want to know all about them just in case they need to make preparations. Just how weather predictions are made, how meteorologists go about their task of formulating a forecast and the science of weather forecasting are just a few of the things you'll find in this book. The science of weather forecasting may sound quite simple, but in actuality it is quite a complicated science.
Inclement weather can be very disruptive to our lives and can cause delays in transportation, floods, drought, and many other serious problems, but "weather forecasts can save lives" and "forecasters can protect livelihoods." In order to make a prediction we need to know the current weather conditions, worldwide weather conditions, and we "need to understand weather patterns. There are many bits of information we need to gather such as air pressure, humidity, and wind direction because the more information you have, the more accurate your forecast will be. The job of a meteorologist has become much more sophisticated and high-tech than it was just a few decades ago. The meteorologist uses "the most high-tech equipment to take local measurements and taps into weather information from around the world."
Our National Weather Service operates 24/7 and collects information from "121 weather stations around the country." A full 187 countries "also gather weather information" and belong to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In this book you'll get right down to the nitty gritty and learn how a forecast is made with everything from weather balloons to Doppler radar, a type of "radar that can measure the speed and direction of moving objects such as raindrops and snowflakes." Scientists send out alerts when inclement weather is approaching and you'll learn the difference between a watch, a warning, and an advisory. You'll learn about composite radar images, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES), "super computers," how computers draw maps, you'll learn how to read a weather map, you'll learn weather lingo, how to make your own predictions, how and why forecasters can err in their predictions, you'll learn about climate change and much more. Sound interesting? It sure is!
This is a very clear, concise, well written book about the science of weather forecasting for the budding meteorologist. There is a wealth of information in this book that will really give the young student an understanding about how weather predictions are made, not only by the backyard weather forecaster, but by those who use the most sophisticated, high-tech equipment available. I found the information to be of high interest and feel it may spur many students on to begin taking an interest in meteorology and what is actually going on weather wise not only in their own communities, but the world around them. There are many full color photographs, map reproductions (including Doppler, computer drawn, NOAA, etc.), and numerous informative sidebars. In the back of the book is a section on "Forecasting Folklore," an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.Doppler Radar, Satellites, and Computer Models: The Science of Weather Forecasting (Weatherwise) OverviewHow do scientists predict the weather? What tools and instruments help them make forecasts? How far in advance can they make good predictions?Weather forecasting is a tricky science. Forecasters gather current weather data and study trends and historical patterns. They use their expertise to predict what kind of weather is likely coming next--with help from computers, satellites, and other machines. In this fact-packed book, discover what it really takes to forecast Earth's weather.

Weather at Sea ReviewThis American edition of Weather At Sea is in a different and better category than the original British edition on which it is based. The book is about twice as long as the original, and the added detail is all North American related. The explanations of such weather elements as Adiabatic Lapse rate are as good as any I've read. For understanding and using the weather in the kind of sailing most of us do, i.e., mostly alongshore with an occasional short foray offshore, I can know of no better single volume. Even though published in the 1988, it still up to date and just plain good. What it does not do is delve into the kind of modern techniques in which I, personally, have little interest, e.g., faxes, 500 Mb charts, GRIBS, etc. A fine little book. It''s a pity it's no longer in print.
But it can be bought quite inexpensively both new and second hand.Weather at Sea OverviewThis book clearly explains the basic principals that govern the weather. The concepts have been made easy to understand, letting you get the most from weather maps and forecasts, along with teaching you to predict the weather.

Air Apparent: How Meteorologists Learned to Map, Predict, and Dramatize Weather ReviewThere have been many books about the history of maps, but few have addressed one of the types of maps that we consult most regularly: the weather map. Monmonier, a professor of geography at Syracuse University and author of several previous books, endeavors to remedy this deficiency and does so admirably.
He goes back to the earliest days of investigating the weather, before telephone or telegraph when any weather map had to be put together days or more after the fact. But it gets done, even so, and when higher-speed communications are available, people are ready.
He goes on to cover developments both technological and social: the advent of radar as a weather detection tool as well as the now-routine weather satellite views, but also how the weather is covered in the news, including the development of the newspaper weather map from the dull black-and-white diagrams that were once routine to the multicolored glory of USA Today's weather map.
There's weather on television, too, and he spends time talking about both The Weather Channel's coverage with their many maps on a chroma-key background and how local stations cover the weather using the latest in technology, from doppler radar to the fancy, fly-through 3-D graphics that many of them seem to use these days.
My personal preference would have been to learn more about the earliest days of the weather maps and how they were developed and less about the development of the glitzy modern weather reporting, but perhaps that is just me, and, considering the ubiquity of the latter, I can't fault its inclusion.
Overall, it's a well-written, good read, and highly recommended for the weather fanatics among us (and I must include myself!).Air Apparent: How Meteorologists Learned to Map, Predict, and Dramatize Weather Overview

Mid-Latitude Weather Systems ReviewCarlson has written a profound book on synoptic systems. Unlike many meteorology texts, this book stresses physical understanding of synoptic systems through practical and lucid mathematical treatment. The physical insight Carlson provides so eloquently makes this an essential read for every student taking synoptic lab. Carlson explains abstruse topics (thermal vorticity for example) in a lucid and cogent manner. There are numerous case studies which are covered in depth and flow perfectly with the points Carlson wants to convey. The book does assume the reader has atleast a fundamental understanding of dynamics and thermo.
I would consider this book to be a perfect supplement to Bluestein's Vol I, Chapter 5, which is a rigorous mathematical treatment of QG theory. It would also serve well as an alternative view of synoptic systems to Bluestein's Vol II since the way they approach topics are considerably different. This book is essential reading for the student and the professional in the field. I would consider this to be the best book I have ever read on the subject despite a few obvious errors. Below are a listing of the chapters in the book:
1. Introduction and mathematical definitions
2. Vorticity and vertical motion
3. The vorticity and thermodynamic equation
4. QG forcing of vertical motions and surface pressure tendency
5. QG energetics
6. Evolution and motion of mid-tropospheric waves: Barotropic viewpoint
7. Simple dynamic models of wave/cyclone Development: Baroclinic Viewpoint
8. Alternative expressions for vertical motion and divergence
9. Some additional dynamic aspects of the baroclinic wave/cyclone. Effects of friction, terrain, and diabatic heating
10. The evolution of cyclones
11. Evolution of the wave/cyclone during cyclogenesis
12. Optimum wavelength and growth rate of baroclinic waves
13. Airflow through mid-latitude synoptic-scale disturbances
14. Aegeostrophic and the dynamics of fronts
15. Upper tropospheric fronts and jet streaks
16. Mid-tropospheric fronts, elevated mixed layers and the severe storm environment
Mid-Latitude Weather Systems OverviewMid-Latitude Weather Systems is the first text to make extensive use of conventional weather charts and equations to fully illustrate the behavior and evolution of weather patterns. With the use of well-documented case studies, Toby Carlson has achieved a unique presentation of selected concepts, which facilitate a clear interpretation of this active and challenging area of study. Early chapters focus on the mathematics necessary to construct simple models which are subsequently used to describe and interpret the movement, evolution, and structure of particular weather patterns. Particular meteorological phenomena are discussed using schematic illustrations in conjunction with actual weather charts for explanation. The charts are an original and powerful feature of the text and display parameters routinely issued by the United States Weather Service.Presenting a fusion between the mathematical and descriptive fields of meteorology and integrated coverage of synoptic and dynamic approaches, Mid-Latitude Weather Systems provides students with an invaluable course text and reference source to gain an unclouded appreciation of the underlying processes and behavior of mid-latitude weather patterns.

Mariner's Weather ReviewThis is truely a gem! For those who are going to sea or those who are weather enthusiasts, this book should be in your library. My wife and I sailed across the Pacific and were helped immensely by Crawford's book. It is well written for both the unfamiliar reader as well as those wanting an in depth understanding of what makes weather happen and what to expect while it's happening. With almost every page having diagrams or photographs, Crawford takes the reader through an explanation of the atmosphere, introducing the reader to the whys and wheres of winds, the role that heat plays in meteorology, discussions of clouds, fogs, ice, and fronts. He discusses weather instruments and weather charts. The book is directed toward the mariner, both professional and cruiser. Though his book is not layed out specifically with generalities first, followed by increased specifics and details, it is not difficult for the reader to get the general gist of what the author is trying to convey, without having to sort through pages of confusing details. At the same time, those who are hungry for the intricacies of meteorlogical phenomina will have a hard time putting the book down: for them it will be like a compelling novel, and their sleep schedule will likely suffer as a result.
I am surprised to find that I am the first to review this fine book, because I regularly give it as a gift, and well received it has been!Mariner's Weather OverviewWeather disturbances occur in the atmospheric sea towering overhead and since all of us, even astronauts, live on the bottom of that sea we should know a lot about weather. But what we usually experience are only the swirls and eddies at our location.A meteorologist interprets data received from widespread observers so his view is broader. Yet since he doesn't actually experience theatmosphere they report his perceptions can be uncertain. And an airman's view is also less real. Weather disturbances are so dangerous to him that he tries to avoid them by flying above or around but not through them. By contrast a mariner's encounter with weather is more tangible. During one voyage he might leave Puget Sound in winter, a week later be standing watch in the Tropics and within another week be off Australia in its summer. But this book is not entitled Mariner's Weather to suggest it is primarily for mariners; nor does it flaunt the jargon of meteorology. In ordinary language it sifts decades of experience gained by mariners coping with atmospheric swirls and eddies all over the world at all times of the year. The result is a commonsense book for everyone ...and that could be why it is so well received.
