A World Turned Over : A Killer Tornado and the Lives It Changed Forever ReviewI would like to make two comments about this book. Most important, it is powerful, beautiful, and interesting, and is a great example of literary reporting, as well as memoir.
My second comment is to express my anger at the amazingly ill-informed and inaccurate comments made by "a reader from Arlington, Virginia," who saw fit to give the lowest rating possible to a book that, by all appearances, he or she has not even read. The comment that it is "poorly researched" could not be further from the truth, and his condescending suggestion that the author should have made use of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History makes him look like a fool, since that institution was cited as a source of information, as was the Eudora Welty Library. The reviewer is right that the town of "Byram" is not spelled correctly, though his argument is rather deflated in light of the fact that he cannot correctly spell the word "rectified" himself. There are many Jackson natives that would take issue with his assertion that there is not a single live oak tree in Jackson. One of the most amazingly ignorant "criticisms" is that "there were very few eyewitness interviews in the book"-----There were more than twenty. Even more outrageous is the claim that there is "very little on the impact the event had upon the community of South Jackson." (sic)
In reality, this impact is the subject of the ENTIRE BOOK.
It's unfortunate that this person's careless reading was translated into a review. Listen instead to The New York Times, which praised A World Turned Over and called it "lush" and "evocative."A World Turned Over : A Killer Tornado and the Lives It Changed Forever Overview

The Sisters Club: Cloudy with a Chance of Boys ReviewIf I had to limit my review to one word, I would say this book is "cute." It didn't do a whole lot for me, but it was still an enjoyable read. Obviously, I am way out of the intended target group to find much in common with this book, but I can see why my students held it hostage for so long. I haven't been able to read it until now because it was constantly going missing off the book shelf.
Basically, you have three very chumming sisters who wish for something "amazing" to happen on a stormy night. Since the ages vary, the "amazing" thing also varies for each sister. I loved how the youngest sister, Joey, was disgusted by boys. Her wish was to see a rare blue tree frog. Stevie, the middle sister doesn't have a clear idea of what she wants, so she just wants something new and exciting. She doesn't count on that including a new boy that has a crush on her. Alex, the oldest, is already interested in boys and wants to get her first kiss. You can guess what her wish is.
It was pretty straight forward and predictable. I liked the little sketches added in by Joey. They were a funny addition. I also liked the fortune telling sock monkey. Those conversations were pretty funny-- perfect for a tween's sense of humor.
This book fits in well with a 10-12 year old girl's reading. I know for a fact that this particular age group loves this book. I've witnessed that first hand. It was a good, clean book. Two simple (and hilarious) kiss scenes are about as "trashy" as you'll find. The Sisters Club: Cloudy with a Chance of Boys OverviewThe forecast calls for a first crush after Stevie makes a wish for something new and daring in this authentic, funny Sisters Club adventure. As the middle sister in a family with three girls, Stevie Reel doesn't know much about boys, and that's always been just fine with her. But lately, things have been changing: kids at school are starting to pair up, and Owen, the new boy in her Earth Science class, seems to have his sights set on Stevie. The trouble is, Stevie doesn't want a boyfriend- she's not even sure she's ready to have a boy friend. And her sisters, who know exactly where they stand on the issue of boys, are no help: drama queen Alex is busy trying to orchestrate a perfect, Romeo-and-Juliet-style first kiss from her heartthrob, Scott Towel (er, Howell), while Joey can't understand why anyone would like a boy better than a frog anyway. If only figuring out boys were as easy as predicting the weather!

Essentials of Meteorology: An Invitation to the Atmosphere ReviewI am a college student at the Univeristy of Colorado at Boulder. I was required to read Ahrens book and I found it very helpful and informative. At times it was a little dull and simple, but it covered the atmosphere and weather related topics extremely well. I recommend this text to anyone interested in weather. The pictures and graphs were great too!Essentials of Meteorology: An Invitation to the Atmosphere OverviewThis updated and enhanced sixth edition of ESSENTIALS OF METEOROLOGY is written by the widely read and authoritative author in introductory meteorology--Donald Ahrens. Ahrens's ability to explain relatively complicated ideas in a student-friendly, manageable fashion will allow you to easily visualize the principles of meteorology. The Weather in the Streets (Virago Modern Classics) ReviewRosamond Lehmann's _The Weather in the Streets_ is a sequel to her earlier book, _Invitation to the Waltz_. Here, Olivia, who in _Invitation to the Waltz_ was a nervous debutante, is now older, though perhaps not much wiser; separated from her husband, she falls in love with the married brother of an old friend and embarks upon a tempestuous affair. Compared to its predecessor, _The Weather in the Streets_ is darker, but more powerful and more complex. Olivia's inner monologues are brilliantly done, and Lehmann even slips into the first person for one section of the book, though the change is so unobtrusive that I almost didn't notice it. Of all of the writers I've read, Lehmann is one of the best at getting into her character's thoughts and showing us their experiences and emotions honestly and directly. The Weather in the Streets (Virago Modern Classics) OverviewTaking up where Invitation to the Waltz left off, The Weather in the Streets shows us Olivia Curtis ten years older, a failed marriage behind her, thinner, sadder, and apprently not much wiser. A chance encounter on a train with a man who enchanted her as a teenager leads to a forbidden love affair and a new world of secret meetings, brief phone calls, and snatched liaisons in anonymous hotel rooms. Years ahead of its time when first published, this subtle and powerful novel shocked even the most stalwart Lehmann fans with its searing honesty and passionate portrayal of clandestine love.

Weather Studies Investigations Manual ReviewWarning - The AMS updates the manual every school year and if you buy the previous year's manual it will not work. I purchased this for my son's on-line class, hoping to save money over the new version but the questions at the end of the chapter are all different. Very confusing until we figured out that they change the order of the questions to make the previous year's manual obsolete for the current year's course.Weather Studies Investigations Manual Overview

The Weather of the Future: Heat Waves, Extreme Storms, and Other Scenes from a Climate-Changed Planet ReviewCullen's book is a good review of climatological information. For me, it fills in the blanks of my knowledge on the subject. Right from the beginning, she establishes a perspective that's missing from the generally available information. She begins with the history of climate science, nicely describing in chronological order, the individuals who made the early breakthroughs that bring us to our moment, with our much more sophisticated multi-model, super-computer averaged, long term climate forecasts.
She explains clearly the relationship of the earth's natural greenhouse gasses, including water vapor, methane, and the pivotal role of carbon dioxide, as the geo-historic regulator gas, which has directly effected the planet's temperature. In fact, like many other scientists, she points out, without irony, how modern society continues to relentlessly release these very gasses...through the burning of oil, coal, and natural gas. Gases, which took nature thousands of years to sequester...modern society releases in little more than a century. Thus our "forcings" are unwittingly reestablishing the same conditions of an earlier greenhouse earth...a much warmer place than today.
Of particular interest to me, is her explication of the contribution of Charles Keeling of Caltech, who single handedly had the insight to build the first instruments to measure accurately the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Keeling began his work in 1958, when he measured carbon dioxide at 315 ppm. Since, his work has closely described, with exquisitely sensitive data, a rise to 385 ppm by 2008. This is the highest carbon dioxide level in 800,000 years.
This book is also clear about the human reasons, why global warming is so low in the public's perception of what constitutes a crisis. Cullen, as a highly qualified, media savvy educator, with a PHD in climate science...having had her own show on the Weather Channel...describes very wisely and calmly, I think, how humans seem to be hard-wired, only for much more immanent crises...in some wonderfully insightful pages on human psychology.
Like most voices in the climate science community, Cullen is what her opponents call an "alarmist". In fact, climatologists like Cullen, ARE alarmed by the science they see becoming more and more powerful, just as our weather becomes more and more extreme. This, she demonstrates in the heart of her thesis, focusing in detail upon weather prognostications, in six world regions. This is not joyful reading. If you are a reader who dislikes such talk, then this book is not for you. But if you are one, who is willing to listen to the best of what climate science offers, Cullen should be on the top of your list. The Weather of the Future: Heat Waves, Extreme Storms, and Other Scenes from a Climate-Changed Planet Overview

Rough Winds: Extreme Weather and Climate Change (Kindle Single) ReviewOne of the problems with the problem of global warming is the phrase "global warming."
Everybody knows what "global" means.
Everybody knows what "warming" means.
Put it together and it means "the world getting hotter."
Simple. Right?
Not quite.
Next winter when a scientifically challenged associate of yours remarks, "So much for all that Global Warming crap! Look at all this snow!" You'll have an opportunity to educate someone as to what global warming really means.
It doesn't mean that we're never going to get snow.
It doesn't mean that it's going to be warm all of the time.
It doesn't mean the oceans are going to boil.
All it means is that the bell-shaped curve of weather events is going to get shifted over. There's going to be a new "average."
That doesn't mean that there isn't going to ever be day with nice weather in the future.
It means that the average temperature has risen and will keep rising.
Powell has written about some complex and confusing science and the effects of the problem in a very accessible way by using lots of illustrative examples. That's commendable. He gives you an appreciation of the spate of natural disasters we're experiencing in 2011 and are likely to experience in the future.Rough Winds: Extreme Weather and Climate Change (Kindle Single) OverviewFor the last few years, and especially in 2011, a new extreme weather event seems to pop up each week. Some decide to stick around: Texas and Oklahoma have been suffering from historic droughts for six months, with no sign of relief. No sooner does Hurricane Irene disappear than Tropical Storm Lee appears to flood Louisiana and stir up wildfires in nearby Texas. We seem beset by more, and more extreme, heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, torrential rainstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards than any of us can remember. Are we witnessing just the normal ups and downs of the weather or is the climate changing? This book arms readers with the facts about the recent extreme weather so that they can answer that question for themselves.
