Eye of the Storm (Picture Books) ReviewThis book is a beautiful summery of Faidley's "Storm Chaser" for kids. The photos are simply breadth-taking and incredible. Most kids would be more interested in storm chasing than storms itself, but Faidley will use his wonderful photos to arouse their curiosity about the science behind our violent atmosphere. If the words can't leave them gasping awe, the photographs will.Eye of the Storm (Picture Books) Overview

The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) ReviewLutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. The illustrations by Dennis Tasa are, of course, excellent, as are most of the photos. I used this text for a weather and climate class I taught and would use it again. The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) OverviewFor introductory courses in Introduction to Meteorology, Introduction to Weather and Climate, and Introduction to the Atmosphere, in departments of Geography, Physical Sciences, Meteorology, Earth Sciences, Geology, and Physics. This student-friendly text offers a current and comprehensive introduction to the atmosphere-its components, problems, and applications. It contains easy-to-understand and everyday examples that reinforce basic concepts and related science principles.

Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers ReviewThis is the most complete introductory-advanced book I have seen to date. It covers many pertinient subjects. Important meteorological concepts are explained in enough detail to satisfy even the more advanced users, but simple enough to give the beginner excellent insight. These concepts do not have to be presented in a difficult fashion to make the author appear intelligent - he makes a bold, simple statement by taking tough concepts and making them understandable to the masses!Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers OverviewThe Second Edition of Roland Stull's METEOROLOGY FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS lets professors quantify the concepts in Ahren's METEOROLOGY TODAY, SEVENTH EDITION like never before. This book can serve as a technical companion to Ahren's text or as a stand-alone text. It provides the mathematical equations needed for a higher level of understanding of meteorology. The organization is mapped directly to the Ahrens book, making Stull's text a perfect companion. More than a lab manual or workbook, this text contains detailed math and physics that expand upon concepts presented in Ahrens' text, as well as numerous solved problems. This text demonstrates how to use mathematical equations (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and finite differential equations) to explain the dominant characteristics of certain atmospheric phenomena and processes.

Satellite Meteorology: An Introduction (International Geophysics) ReviewThis is a very good book for atmospheric science and meteorology students and researchers. It includes many topics that are very useful for both educational and research purposes: the orbits of satellites, the instruments they carry, the radiation they detect, and, most importantly, the fundamental atmospheric data that can be retrieved from their observations.I first read this book when I was a graduate student in atmospheric sciences. Most books I have read are concerned with dynamics or physics, which are the classical fields. Very few of them discuss the practical yet not so established topics like satellite meteorology. This book is the most comprehensive one I have ever read that covers this whole new field.Satellite Meteorology: An Introduction (International Geophysics) Overview

Adventures in Tornado Alley: The Storm Chasers Review"Mike and Eric seem to have taken the art of storm photography to new heights...they have produced images that speak eloquently about the grandeur and beauty of storms that many people will never see for themselves."
--from the introduction by Dr. Charles A. Doswell IIIFull disclosure first: I'm biased because both authors are good friends of mine and my name is mentioned more than once in the text---but I don't make any money from the sales or have any interest other than promoting the book because I think it's an outstanding product.
Mike and Eric are two of the finest weather photographers in the world, and this book is essentially a greatest hits collection from their individual catalogs. Every page contains one stunning image after another, carefully reproduced on heavy, quality stock. The book is organized by chase day or event, with about six individual chases from Mike, four solo chases by Eric, and the rest featuring pictures from both photographers, usually from different angles to give real dramatic range to the imagery. Accompanying the photos is text from both describing their forecast process and tactical decisions they made in the field. Since Mike and Eric have different styles of chasing, this makes for an interesting contrast as well as an entertaining and informative explanation for various shots.
The introduction by tornado scientist and longtime chaser Charles Doswell sets the tone, describing the allure of storm chasing and placing Mike and Eric's work in the context of those who came before them. Toward the end of the book, Dr. Doswell provides an explanation behind the science of severe weather, an easy-to-understand and memorable description of how such sudden mountains of air and water appear on the plains.
What I like most about the book is how it reflects the values of my two friends: the spectacle of atmospheric phenomena. Their vision is focused strictly outward, on the subjects of their photographs, such as the classic supercells of the northern plains or LPs in New Mexico, Mike's breathtaking auroras in winter, or Eric's timeless shots of the Mulvane, Kansas white tornado and rainbow.
Most chasers know that Eric passed away in the summer of 2007. This collection of images is the perfect tribute to his career as a storm observer and photographer, both in form and content. I believe Eric would agree that the book depicts chasing the way many of us know and love it best, as an escape from daily hassles into the theater of the sky, where an awe-inspiring show plays every spring: the severe storms of the Tornado Alley."In storm chasing, you have the chance to see a pageant of power and elegant form unfold before your eyes, even in the absence of the ultimate: a tornado. Mike and Eric have captured that over and over in these images."
--Charles DoswellAdventures in Tornado Alley: The Storm Chasers Overview
From surreal skyscapes to wholesale destruction: the most dramatic scenes from the natural world.
The destructive power of nature has always been a source of fear and fascination, and never more so than now, when climate change and extreme weather conditions are constantly in the news. Across the central United States, the infamous storms of Tornado Alley are fueled by the collision of cold fronts from Canada and warm fronts from the Gulf of Mexico. People have been chasing these storms for decades in pursuit of thrilling experiences, but now a new generation of storm chasers is combining scientific knowledge with powerful images. This book follows Mike Hollingshead and Eric Nguyen on seventeen chases through Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and South Dakota, illustrating the unfolding events with sequential shots and a running commentary by the chasers themselves. These spectacular storm portfolios are expanded with special features on weather phenomena like hail and mammatus clouds plus insights into forecasting and research. 340 color photographs

Hurricane Almanac: The Essential Guide to Storms Past, Present, and Future (Hurricane Almanac: The Essential Guide to Storms Past, Present, & Fu) ReviewBryan Norcross did a teriffic job with this paperback book its about 250 pages of easy reading. He writes about things like: what a hurricane is, Past storms of the years, modern storms, FAQ's. He then talks about life in a hurricane zone. He tells you things like where to park your car, where to be in your house during the storm, to evacuate or not to?, what to have on hand during the storm, what to do when winds approach certain levels. He then talks about storm surges, insurance claims, etc. He gives a summary of what a Hurricane is, and how he feels about things like Hurricane Categories 1-5, and 5 day hurricane tracks!! The book is overall a must to have for those in dangers harm, it includes several check lists of things to do, before, during and after the storm. I give this book a 4 out of 5 star scale, its GREAT!Hurricane Almanac: The Essential Guide to Storms Past, Present, and Future (Hurricane Almanac: The Essential Guide to Storms Past, Present, & Fu) OverviewEssential Information from CBS News' Hurricane AnalystBryan Norcross's pioneering and courageous TV coverage of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 helped millions of people in Florida cope with the killer storm. This revised and updated version of last year's popular almanac adds detailed stories ofthepowerful hurricanes of the past that would be catastrophes if they happened today and explores how explosive coastal development during a timeof relatively few hurricanes has set the stage for mega-disasters. If hurricanes make landfall today at the rate they did in much of the twentieth century, how could we prevent the unimaginable destruction? A new section will also help you better understand hurricane advisories.Bryan Norcross's Hurricane Almanac is two books in one. The first half is hurricane science, history, and perspectives on how we, as a society, deal with hurricanes. The second half isa personal guide to "Living Successfully in the Hurricane Zone." In addition to reviewing and explaining the relatively mild 2006 hurricane season, it looks forward to hurricane seasons to come, highlights the fascinating history of hurricanes interacting with civilization, and detailsour rapidly increasingly ability---but still with limitations---to predict the severity and tracks of storms. With preparation checklists and shopping lists, an easy-to-understand guide to the technical information coming from the National Hurricane Center, and critical practical information, Hurricane Almanac is your essential guide to coping with Mother Nature's greatest storms. MexWX: Mexico Weather for Boaters ReviewSeems like every cruising boat has a copy of this onboard. It's a great reference about many of the local weather phenomena affecting boaters -- areas of katabatic winds, summer chubascos (wicked thunderstorms), hurricanes and the Tehuantepeckers -- and how to minimize your risk from each.
Note that it's over 10 years old now, so some of the resources listed (radio frequencies, etc.) have changed. Don't worry -- friendly boaters will give you the current information on that stuff. The basic weather patterns haven't changed, and that's the real reason to buy this book.MexWX: Mexico Weather for Boaters Overview"MexWX: Mexico Weather for Boaters" is an important textfor any boater visiting Mexico's Pacific waters. Concisely written andwell illustrated, it answers: HOW to use your boat's own SSB, VHF,WXfax and Ham radios to gather vital weather forecasts for yourlocation in Mexican waters;WHEN does Hurricane Season start and end; WHERE is it safe to "summerover;" WHAT creates a "weather window" and HOW to tell if it's aboutto slam shut; WHO broadcasts weather for Mexico; HOW to navigate theinfamous Gulfs of Tehuantepec and Papagallo, and more. Sprinkled witha few choice sea stories and vivid ancedotes, Rains wrote this bookfor fellow adventurers. ("WX" is radio jargon for "weather" -pronounced "wex") Hence, MexWX.Fully indexed, perfect bound, with a durable film lamination, this 7"x 10' book was built for boating.

Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth ReviewEver since I was a child trapped inside by the pouring rain as the remnants of Camille passed over East Tennessee, I have been fascinated by hurricanes. With that in mind, this book was hard to resist. Especially since I had spent many hours watching Dr. Sheets on television. It is pretty obvious though that Jack Williams did most of the writing and for those of us who are not that familiar with the science of meteorology that is a very good thing for this is a very complicated subject and dumbing down is exactly what I needed.
This book is not so much a book about major hurricanes as it is a history of the predicting of hurricanes. From Columbus to the present satellites and Doppler systems this book tells the story of man's attempts to guess what Mother Nature is up to. There is even a chapter about attempts to actually control hurricanes.
Even with the simple way the authors attempted to tell their story I was lost at times but not all too often. For a trained meteorologist this book would probably seem almost childish, but for the average person like myself it is just about right. I still don't completely understand everything about wind sheer, computer models, and latent heat but I am at least familiar with the terms now. From now on, as a hurricane approaches the U.S. coast and I sit there in front of the TV I will have a vague idea of how the computer models work and will know all about the Bermuda high.
The chapter I found the most interesting was the chapter about hurricane Andrew. That is the kind of thing I was actually looking for in this book but even though I only found one chapter of what I had been looking for, I still found this book to be highly informative, interesting, and well written. I imagine that Dr. Sheets could write an entire book on Andrew, and I wish he wouldHurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth Overview

The Tornado: Nature's Ultimate Windstorm ReviewI strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in tornadoes and wishing to learn more about the subject. Topics covered include nearly every aspect of tornado development and subsequent evolution, forecasting and warnings, the Fujita scale for rating damage, and tornado risks by geographical region. As a meteorologist, I think he does a great job communicating core scientific concepts to the reader in an easy-to-understand manner, and the chapters "Tornado Myths" and "Tornado Safety" contain valuable information and are must-reads, esp. for those less familiar with severe storms/tornadoes.
In short, a good read for anyone interested in tornadoes, and definitely a book you will want to have on your shelf. The Tornado: Nature's Ultimate Windstorm Overview
Tornadoes occur in every state in the Union, and each region of the nation has its unique "tornado season." The most intense tornadoes can carry automobiles a half-mile and level a well built home. Some tornadoes have crossed mountains, seemingly unimpeded. Some have lasted more than an hour, scouring the earth with wind speeds of 250 miles per hour. Nor are tornadoes unique to the United States. In Bangladesh, for example, they have killed a thousand people in a single swath.

Filled with dramatic accounts of tornado touchdowns, this book addresses the whirlwind of questions surrounding the phenomenon of the tornado. How often does a tornado hit a particular location? How fast are the winds? Do tornadoes really seek out trailer parks? Can they actually defeather a chicken? How many tornadoes hit the United States every year? How big can tornadoes grow?

Thomas P. Grazulis, a tornado research meteorologist and founder of the Tornado Project, has been a consultant for television specials, including Cyclone (National Geographic), Target Tornado (The Weather Channel), Forces of Nature (CBS), and others, helping provide answers to these questions for the general public. Here he sets the record straight about tornado risk, the Fujita Scale, and the number of tornadoes occurring annually. He also sheds light on misconceptions and contradictory theories about tornadoes. Recreating the incredible drama so often accompanying interactions between people and tornadoes, The Tornado: Nature's Ultimate Windstorm provides detailed meteorological and statistical information on these marvels of nature, among the most fascinating scientific puzzles on the planet.

"At about 4:25 P.M. on June 9 [1953], fishermen on the north end of the Quabbin Reservoir in western Massachusetts watched as an unusual boiling and tumbling cloud took the form of an enormous, revolving cylinder. Minutes later the end of the cylinder reached down like an enormous finger and trees began to snap in the woods of Petersham. . . . For the next eighty-four minutes, that funnel would cut a damage swath of unprecedented size and intensity in the northeastern United States. People died in the open, in cars, in lakes, and under homes in what would be called the Worcester tornado. It lifted and carried tons of debris eastward; tar paper, shingles, sheet metal, and plywood rained down onto two dozen towns in eastern Massachusetts. . . . Photographs and a piece of waterlogged, frozen mattress were found floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Trousers with a wallet were taken from the second floor of a home in Shrewsbury and dropped in Westwood, 25 miles east-southeast. . . . A Social Security card was returned to its owner from Hyannis on Cape Cod, 90 miles southeast of Worcester."--from the Preface

An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation, Volume 84, Second Edition (International Geophysics) ReviewTo my disappointed, this copy is quite different from the orignial copy from my aspects. First of all, the paper quality is different, not as smoothy as the original one.
Second, because of the bad paper, this copy is much thicker than the original one.
Third, the figures in this book are not as clear as the original ones, which can be noticed clearly by comparing with an original edition.
I wonder it is a copy one or just because of different printing companies. Anyway, I do not like this edition.
I hope Amazon can update this book as soon as possible. An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation, Volume 84, Second Edition (International Geophysics) OverviewThis Second Edition of An Introduction to Atmospheric Radiation has been extensively revised to address the fundamental study and quantitative measurement of the interactions of solar and terrestrial radiation with molecules, aerosols, and cloud particles in planetary atmospheres. It contains 70% new material, much of it stemming from the investigation of the atmospheric greenhouse effects of external radiative perturbations in climate systems, and the development of methodologies for inferring atmospheric and surface parameters by means of remote sensing. Liou's comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of atmospheric radiation was developed for students, academics, and researchers in atmospheric sciences, remote sensing, and climate modeling.Key Features*Balanced treatment of fundamentals and applications*Includes over 170 illustrations to complement the concise description of each subject*Numerous examples and hands-on exercises at the end of each chapter

Radiative Transfer in the Atmosphere and Ocean (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series) ReviewThe service provided is indeed very good. However, inevitably there exist some printing mistakes in this hard cover edition. Some pages are confused with others, also some characters are printed wrong. That's why I just give it 4 stats other than 5.Radiative Transfer in the Atmosphere and Ocean (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series) OverviewThis text provides a foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of radiative transfer, for advanced students of atmospheric, oceanic and environmental sciences. The transfer of solar and infrared radiation through optically-thick clouds, aerosol layer, and the oceanic mixed layer is presented through the use of heuristic models of scattering and absorption, and a systematic approach to formulation and solution of the radiative transfer equation. Problems such as the the transmission of ultraviolet radiation through the atmosphere and ocean, remote sensing, solar heating and infrared cooling processes, UV biological dose rates, and Greenhouse warming are solved using a variety of methods. This self-contained, systematic treatment will prepare students from a range of disciplines in problems concerning the effects of solar and infrared radiation on natural systems. The hardback edition received excellent reviews.
