The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) ReviewLutgens and Tarbuck made this a very readable text by writing in a stratightforward manner and by focusing on fundamental principles. The typical non-science major undergrad or general reader should be able to grasp the important concepts, while the more scientifically literate readers will find plenty of material to wrap their minds around. For example, much of the quantitative stuff is presented in separate boxes, for those who want to go beyond the basics as presented in the text. The illustrations by Dennis Tasa are, of course, excellent, as are most of the photos. I used this text for a weather and climate class I taught and would use it again. The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (8th Edition) OverviewFor introductory courses in Introduction to Meteorology, Introduction to Weather and Climate, and Introduction to the Atmosphere, in departments of Geography, Physical Sciences, Meteorology, Earth Sciences, Geology, and Physics. This student-friendly text offers a current and comprehensive introduction to the atmosphere-its components, problems, and applications. It contains easy-to-understand and everyday examples that reinforce basic concepts and related science principles.

The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (10th Edition) ReviewThis text is an excellent resource for an Introductory Meteorology course. Each chapter and topic built upon learning from the previous chapters and topics. This text not only covered detailed information about all meteorological topics, but also contained current event information from the past decade, news clippings, and common questions that may confuse students. The animations and extras included on the additional CD provided an added resource for further learning. The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology (10th Edition) Overview Using everyday, easy-to-grasp examples to reinforce basic concepts, this highly regarded handbook remains the standard introduction to meteorology and the atmosphere – components, problems, and applications. Includes the most up-to-date coverage of topics such as: ozone depletion; the ultraviolet index; temperature; dew point temperature and orographic effects; wildfires and weather; thunderstorms and lightning; the record-breaking Florida hurricane season; effects of air pollution, and more. Incorporates top-quality visuals, including new satellite images and illustrations by the award-winning Dennis Tasa, to demonstrate the highly visual nature of meteorology. Uses a largely non-technical writing style to help readers grasp important concepts. For those interested in learning more about meteorology.

Weather Map Handbook ReviewI do a lot of sailing, and really needed something to guide me through all of the available charts. I'm glad to say that this title measures up in every regard. It covers each type of weather chart, one by one, such as the Surface Chart, 700 mb Chart, and so on, presents an example, and scrutinizes the purpose and utility of each one. It even covers forecast models and radar products. This really is a unique (and welcome) departure from the format of other weather books. I found that the Weather Map Handbook gave me some excellent insight into understanding the weather systems that I have to deal with on the Gulf Coast. My only beef with the book is that it needs a few more marine-oriented charts. Some color maps would be nice, but this doesn't really detract from the book. Two thumbs up!Weather Map Handbook OverviewThe Weather Map Handbook explains nearly every forecasting chart used in meteorology. It's designed especially for the Internet, showing how to predict weather from scratch using the same charts that professional meteorologists use.A complete listing of weather map symbols, iconographs, and decoding information fills the pages. It's perfect for hobbyists, pilots, students, broadcasters, and storm chasers.Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more.

Exercises for Weather and Climate (7th Edition) ReviewThis book is an adjunct to a meteorology class I am taking. It is full of errors, mathmatical ones, graphics, even page numbers. I expect better from Pearson. I don't know who edited this book but they did a poor job.
Also the labs do not flow particularly well, and some things don't make sense. Not the greatest teaching tool I have ever seen, even with the cool CD.
Exercises for Weather and Climate (7th Edition) OverviewThis lab manual's 18 exercises encourage readers to review important ideas and concepts through problem solving, simulations, and guided thinking. The graphics program and seven computer-based simulations and tutorials help to convey key concepts. Designed to accompany any meteorology book, it features a two-column format with perforated pages for easy use in the lab. Interactive computer modules are presented as Flash applets, examining topics such as Earth-Sun geometry, radiation fluxes, moisture, hurricanes, and climate controls. A CD containing seven modules of simulations and tutorials has been completely revised to run in with Flash, offering a more user-friendly interface and a higher degree of interactivity. This software is bound into every new copy of the Exercise manual. Vertical Structure of the Atmosphere; Earth-Sun Geometry; The Surface Energy Budget; Simulating the Earth's Energy Budget; Atmospheric Moisture; Saturation and Atmospheric Stability; Cloud Droplets and Raindrops; Atmospheric Motion; Weather Map Analysis; Mid-Latitude Cyclones; Thunderstorms and Tornadoes; Hurricanes; Climate Controls; Climate Classification and World Climates; Climatic Variability and Change; Simulating Climatic Change; Dimensions and Units; Earth Measures; GeoClock; Weather Symbols. A useful reference for anyone interested in learning more about weather and climate.
