Thirty Percent Chance of Enlightenment ReviewThe nature of my work is such that I work in as many as 70 countries every year. I'm always interested in new places, but more than that I'm interested in the questions that new places cause me to ask that I have never asked before. Unfamiliar places cause curiosity, which far more fun than reaching answers. Tim Brookes' "Thirty Percent Chance of Enlightenment" is a voyage that caused me to ask the same kinds of intriguing questions as I was reading it that I normally ask when I'm on the road in an unfamiliar place. He approaches the seemingly mundane (weather, for example)from oblique perspectives that reveal sides of the ordinary that are nothing short of extraordinary. You will enjoy this book - I highly recommend it to anyone with even the mildest sense of curiosity about the world around us.Thirty Percent Chance of Enlightenment OverviewOften hilarious, ultimately profound, Thirty Percent Chance of Enlightenment begins when Tim Brookes receives a phone call from his editor at National Geographic asking if he'd like to write an article on weather forecasting-an assignment that doesn't go as forecast. He embarks on an adventure that starts in a hurricane on an icy mountaintop in New Hampshire and takes him to India to watch the monsoon come ashore and write about the elaborate, almost mystical art of monsoon forecasting. When the rain begins, however, a series of misunderstandings finds him banned from every single office of the India Meteorological Department. Before long, his journey turns into a cross-country road trip in search of the true meaning of the monsoon-a trip that takes him through the spice villages high in the Western Ghats, to a Hindu wedding at which all the main participants end up drenched, and leaves him ankle-deep in a holy river where the temple elephants bathe. He discovers the history of the umbrella, the bizarre ritual of rain-inducing donkey weddings, and for his erratic and dusty labors, he ends up being rewarded with a glimpse into the spiritual nature of water.

Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) ReviewI recently began to pursue a life long interest in learning more about severe weather; it's forecasting and impact on the environment. As my search for materials to help me learn expanded and my research came to its peak, I kept getting the same feedback from all the various web sites and sources. "Pick up anything from Tim Vasquez."
I have looked high and low for anything that didn't require a physics degree to read and I have found that in every single book I have purchased with his name on it. His books have excited me even more about severe weather and led me down the path to becoming a trained spotter with Skywarn. I cannot recommend his books highly enough.
Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) OverviewThe science of forecasting has not changed, but the Internet and new marvels of technology have completely redefined the process. It's not a rare thing for weather hobbyists and National Weather Service forecasters to get a product from the very same site. With more and more charts and tools appearing on the Internet by the week, how do you make sense of the avalanche of weather imagery and data? Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. The WSR-88D doppler radar, in use by the United States weather services, has played a vast part in the weather information revolution. In the Weather Map Handbook, it gets thirty pages packed with the fundamentals and algorithms of the WSR-88D. Much of this information is obscure and nearly impossible to find. From the workings of the Composite Reflectivity product to the exact process used by the Mesocyclone Detection Algorithm to deconstruct a radar scan, any NEXRAD radar product on the Internet can be understood. From the WRF to the NGM, from the GFS to the GEM, each numerical forecast model is revealed in incredible detail. Ensemble forecasts are highlighted. The satellite chapter explains visible, infrared, and water vapor imagery, how it is created, and how to interpret it. Even the METAR, TAF, SYNOP, and radiosonde formats get their own sections, complete with decoding instructions. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more! Whether you're a hobbyist, private forecaster, a professional, or a student, the Weather Map Handbook is the book you can't be without.

Weather Derivative Valuation: The Meteorological, Statistical, Financial and Mathematical Foundations ReviewMany businesses, particularly ones that specialize in energy and agriculture, can be subjected to severe financial impact by changes in the weather. Techniques from financial engineering can be used to manage the financial risk involved in these changes, and are structured as swap, call, and put contracts based on `weather indices'. These financial instruments are referred to as `weather derivatives' and are the subject of this book. The weather indices are typically the `heating degree day' (HDD), and the `cooling degree day' (CDD), but could also be such quantities as precipitation, snowfall, and humidity. The HDD (for a particular day) is usually defined as the maximum difference (bounded below by zero) between a chosen baseline temperature and the average temperature. The CDD is the difference between the average temperature and a baseline (again bounded below by zero).
A perfect weather derivative would be designed so as to eliminate all risk due to the weather. For example, if the temperature is to be the index of choice, then one would like to be able to `hedge' so successfully so as to make, as far as the affected industry is concerned, the weather effectively irrelevant. This of course is not possible, due to the unavailability of perfect forecasts. However, one can enter into weather derivative contracts that will enable the affected industry to manage their weather risk in a manner that that makes use of what can actually be predicted in weather forecasts, with the remaining uncertainty being hedged. Possible lost revenue due to adverse weather can be hedged for example by a weather derivative that will give a revenue stream that is based on the forecast error.
Like all other financial instruments, there will be a cost associated with weather derivative contracts. Within the scope of propriety, the authors have given an excellent introduction to the methodologies used to price weather derivatives, and how to perform risk management of portfolios based on weather derivatives. Since the underlying weather indices are not traded, pricing based on arbitrage is more involved for the case of weather derivatives. The authors though show how arbitrage pricing can be done, and also give in-depth discussion on other pricing strategies, these being classified as `actuarial' and `market-based' pricing. Actuarial pricing, as the name implies, involves calculating the probabilities of all future outcomes of a contract or portfolio of contracts, while market-based pricing is based on the actual prices that are observed in the market. Arbitrage pricing can be done in locations where the option is actively traded. Otherwise, the authors show how a swap contract defined on the index can be used to obtain dynamic hedging. However, they remark that this pricing strategy is not widely done at the time of writing. Actuarial pricing thus dominates the discussions in the book.

The mathematical modeling involved in weather derivatives can be difficult, due in part to the fact that the underlying weather indices are nonstationary, i.e. they are characterized by variations and trends with scales greater than the length of the historical record. In addition, the weather indices exhibit a high degree of autocorrelation. Also, the actual measurement of volatility can be problematic, due to sparse data sets or even the unavailability of data. Further, arriving at a general method for estimating volatility is difficult since the exposure to weather risk is highly variable between different companies.
One method of valuing single contracts discussed early on in the book is called `burn analysis', and can be viewed as a step above a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation. It attempts to value a contract based on how it would have performed in the past. The authors estimate the fair strike for a swap, i.e. the strike that gives an expected value of zero, using burn analysis. This involves using the (detrended) historical index values and the calculation of the mean of this data to estimate the expected index. The authors show how to incorporate `risk loading' to model more closely what is actually going on in the trading of swaps. They also show how to apply the burn analysis to options, calculating the `fair premium' by using the historical pay-offs, with the mean of this data being the expected pay-off.
The most interesting part of the book is the one on arbitrage pricing models. The price charged for a weather contract will be influenced by the possibility of hedging, which is different from actuarial pricing, which is based on diversification. The arbitrage pricing mechanism that the authors discuss is restricted to weather swaps, and they review arbitrage theory both from the standpoint of partial stochastic differential equations and from measure theory. The swaps are all assumed to be linear and based on linear degree days. The authors derive the stochastic differential equations for the swap price to obtain a version of the Black-Scholes equation for weather swaps trading with a premium. They also derive, using a hedging strategy based on forward contracts, the partial differential equation satisfied by the price of the weather option. The solution of this equation gives the arbitrage price, which interestingly turns out to be the same as the actuarial fair price without risk loading. This is due to the absence of drift in the discounted swap price and also the fact that there is no expected loss on the swaps. The authors' algorithm for calculating the arbitrage price for options consists of taking the market swap price to be the expected index, using this to calculate the expected pay-off, and then discounting this quantity to give the arbitrage price. This algorithm is done assuming knowledge of the standard deviation of the settlement index. Their algorithm is interesting, but its validation is not discussed in the book. Readers will have to consult the references for further discussion on this important issue. To gain confidence in the efficacy of the algorithm will of course require it be used in real-life trading or risk management.Weather Derivative Valuation: The Meteorological, Statistical, Financial and Mathematical Foundations OverviewOriginally published in 2005, Weather Derivative Valuation covers all the meteorological, statistical, financial and mathematical issues that arise in the pricing and risk management of weather derivatives. There are chapters on meteorological data and data cleaning, the modelling and pricing of single weather derivatives, the modelling and valuation of portfolios, the use of weather and seasonal forecasts in the pricing of weather derivatives, arbitrage pricing for weather derivatives, risk management, and the modelling of temperature, wind and precipitation. Specific issues covered in detail include the analysis of uncertainty in weather derivative pricing, time-series modelling of daily temperatures, the creation and use of probabilistic meteorological forecasts and the derivation of the weather derivative version of the Black-Scholes equation of mathematical finance. Written by consultants who work within the weather derivative industry, this book is packed with practical information and theoretical insight into the world of weather derivative pricing.

Meteorology Demystified ReviewThe purpose of this book is to demystify weather. But while the book begins with a promising use of physical equations, these serve only to pad the book with test questions that are not further applied in the text to demystify (i.e., explain in causal terms) why things happen in the atmosphere. For example, there is no explanation of the Coriolis effect, and thus the wind patterns presented early on make no sense at all. There is a great deal of talk about what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a tornado, and so on, but this information is readily available from any disaster center and elsewhere on the web. I came away from this book more mystified than when I opened it. A tempestuous disappointment.Meteorology Demystified Overview

Weather Map Handbook ReviewI do a lot of sailing, and really needed something to guide me through all of the available charts. I'm glad to say that this title measures up in every regard. It covers each type of weather chart, one by one, such as the Surface Chart, 700 mb Chart, and so on, presents an example, and scrutinizes the purpose and utility of each one. It even covers forecast models and radar products. This really is a unique (and welcome) departure from the format of other weather books. I found that the Weather Map Handbook gave me some excellent insight into understanding the weather systems that I have to deal with on the Gulf Coast. My only beef with the book is that it needs a few more marine-oriented charts. Some color maps would be nice, but this doesn't really detract from the book. Two thumbs up!Weather Map Handbook OverviewThe Weather Map Handbook explains nearly every forecasting chart used in meteorology. It's designed especially for the Internet, showing how to predict weather from scratch using the same charts that professional meteorologists use.A complete listing of weather map symbols, iconographs, and decoding information fills the pages. It's perfect for hobbyists, pilots, students, broadcasters, and storm chasers.Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. Weather Matters: An American Cultural History Since 1900 (Culture America) Review"Weather Matters" is on the ROROTOKO list of cutting-edge intellectual nonfiction. Professor Mergen's book interview ran here as cover feature on April 10, 2009.Weather Matters: An American Cultural History Since 1900 (Culture America) OverviewEverybody talks about it--and why not? From tornadoes in the Heartland to hurricanes in the Gulf, blizzards in the Midwest to droughts across the South, weather matters to Americans and makes a difference in their daily lives.Bernard Mergen's captivating and kaleidoscopic new book illuminates our inevitable obsession with weather--as both physical reality and evocative metaphor--in all of its myriad forms, focusing on the ways in which it is perceived, feared, embraced, managed, and even marketed. From the roaring winds atop Mount Washington to the reflective calm of the poet's lair, he takes a long-overdue look at public response to weather in art, literature, and the media. In the process, he reveals the cross-pollination of ideas and perceptions about weather across many fields, including science, government, education, and consumer culture. Rich in detail and anecdote, Weather Matters is filled with eccentric characters, quirky facts, and vividly drawn events. Mergen elaborates on the curious question of the "butterfly effect," tracing the notion to a 1918 suggestion that a grasshopper in Idaho could cause a devastating storm in New York City. He chronicles the history of the U.S. Weather Bureau and the American Meteorological Society and their struggles for credibility, as well as the rise of private meteorology and weather modification--including the military's flirtation with manipulating weather as a weapon. And he recounts an eight-day trip with storm chasers, a gripping tale of weather at its fiercest that shows scientists putting their lives at stake in the pursuit of data.Ultimately, Mergen contends that the popularity of weather as a topic of conversation can be found in its quasi-religious power: the way it illuminates the paradoxes of order and disorder in daily life--a way of understanding the roles of chance, scientific law, and free will that makes our experience of weather uniquely American. Brimming with new insights into familiar experiences, Weather Matters makes phenomena like Hurricane Katrina and global warming at once more understandable and more troubling--examples of our inability to really control the environment--as it gives us a new way of looking at our everyday world. This book is part of the CultureAmerica series.

Weather Forecasting Handbook (5th Edition) ReviewThis book is the first book to truly go into detail on exactly what goes into professional and non-professional forecasts. The author explains the fundamentals of forecasting while leaving out textbook-style boredom. This book is perfect for beginners who want to learn how to forecast and also veterans who need to brush up. This book explains somewhat hard-to-explain-topics with ease. I am a 4th year meteorology student, and I find the book riveting. Very well researched and extremely thorough, the author is a master at forecasting for the most dangerous area in the world: tornado alley. He knows what he's talking about! Do yourself a favor and buy it. This is the best book on the subject I have ever read, and I have read a lot!!Weather Forecasting Handbook (5th Edition) OverviewThe Information Age has blossomed and now anyone can run a weather center from their own office or home. Unfortunately, nearly all popular weather books are nothing more than essays on the science of meteorology. The Weather Forecasting Handbook breaks this mold by explaining all the latest forecasting principles, techniques, and tools. Basic physical concepts are reviewed, and commonly-employed analysis methods are presented. Then weather systems are explained in terms of their thermal structure, dynamics, and effects. Special problems such as thunderstorms, winter weather, and tropical weather get chapters of their own. Margins are filled with forecasting facts, hard-hitting quotes, education stories, and even a few fun weather jokes. With added emphasis on analysis, visualization, and awareness of model limitations, readers learn to learn tools properly and are always a step ahead. The Weather Forecasting Handbook is a must-have for all meteorology students, advanced weather hobbyists, professionals, weathercasters, storm chasers, sailors, and pilots. Whether you want to know how a short wave works, how to find a front, what isentropic surfaces are, how to analyze a 500-millibar chart, what type of vertical motion to expect around jet streaks, or why a high pressure area is building, the Weather Forecasting Handbook's no-nonsense approach will give you a solid foundation to understanding everyday forecasting problems. This version adds 41 pages and 46 illustrations compared to the previous (fourth) edition. It includes expanded information on numerous topics, especially on the subject of analysis, and adds minor corrections.192 illustrations, 7 x 10", color cover.

Mid-Latitude Weather Systems ReviewCarlson has written a profound book on synoptic systems. Unlike many meteorology texts, this book stresses physical understanding of synoptic systems through practical and lucid mathematical treatment. The physical insight Carlson provides so eloquently makes this an essential read for every student taking synoptic lab. Carlson explains abstruse topics (thermal vorticity for example) in a lucid and cogent manner. There are numerous case studies which are covered in depth and flow perfectly with the points Carlson wants to convey. The book does assume the reader has atleast a fundamental understanding of dynamics and thermo.
I would consider this book to be a perfect supplement to Bluestein's Vol I, Chapter 5, which is a rigorous mathematical treatment of QG theory. It would also serve well as an alternative view of synoptic systems to Bluestein's Vol II since the way they approach topics are considerably different. This book is essential reading for the student and the professional in the field. I would consider this to be the best book I have ever read on the subject despite a few obvious errors. Below are a listing of the chapters in the book:
1. Introduction and mathematical definitions
2. Vorticity and vertical motion
3. The vorticity and thermodynamic equation
4. QG forcing of vertical motions and surface pressure tendency
5. QG energetics
6. Evolution and motion of mid-tropospheric waves: Barotropic viewpoint
7. Simple dynamic models of wave/cyclone Development: Baroclinic Viewpoint
8. Alternative expressions for vertical motion and divergence
9. Some additional dynamic aspects of the baroclinic wave/cyclone. Effects of friction, terrain, and diabatic heating
10. The evolution of cyclones
11. Evolution of the wave/cyclone during cyclogenesis
12. Optimum wavelength and growth rate of baroclinic waves
13. Airflow through mid-latitude synoptic-scale disturbances
14. Aegeostrophic and the dynamics of fronts
15. Upper tropospheric fronts and jet streaks
16. Mid-tropospheric fronts, elevated mixed layers and the severe storm environment
Mid-Latitude Weather Systems OverviewMid-Latitude Weather Systems is the first text to make extensive use of conventional weather charts and equations to fully illustrate the behavior and evolution of weather patterns. With the use of well-documented case studies, Toby Carlson has achieved a unique presentation of selected concepts, which facilitate a clear interpretation of this active and challenging area of study. Early chapters focus on the mathematics necessary to construct simple models which are subsequently used to describe and interpret the movement, evolution, and structure of particular weather patterns. Particular meteorological phenomena are discussed using schematic illustrations in conjunction with actual weather charts for explanation. The charts are an original and powerful feature of the text and display parameters routinely issued by the United States Weather Service.Presenting a fusion between the mathematical and descriptive fields of meteorology and integrated coverage of synoptic and dynamic approaches, Mid-Latitude Weather Systems provides students with an invaluable course text and reference source to gain an unclouded appreciation of the underlying processes and behavior of mid-latitude weather patterns.

National Geographic My First Pocket Guides: Weather ReviewThe Audubon First Guide to Weather is one of the best in the series of Audubon First Guides. Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather ReviewWhen cutting edge technology works and lives are saved it rapidly becomes ho-hum; violent death that did not happen doesn't make the television news or newspaper headlines. How many recall that a three-day storm over the Great Lakes in the 1800s would routinely kill 500 people, a hurricane in Galveston in 1900 killed more than 6,000, or that before 1960 a strong cold front spawning tornadoes could kill or mutilate a few thousand as it raced across the country? We have a short national memory, which is probably why weather scientists have not been heaped with more medals than they could carry for the lives they've saved in the last sixty years.
Mike Smith grew up at precisely the right time to become an intimate part of the revolution in weather analysis and forecasting that, outside the public eye, surged through this country. He writes of the efforts of weather scientists who not only did the research that allowed accurate forecasts of severe weather but took the steps to create a warning system that meant scores of Americans didn't die in their beds each year as their houses blew up around them in tornadoes. It is a story of creativity and determination fighting bureaucracy and of humanity at its best as ad hoc teams formed between meteorologists who had learned to forecast severe storms and TV and radio broadcasters who had enough foresight and willingness to come up with new and faster ways to get word to the people that bad things were about to happen in their world and how to protect themselves.
This year when tornadoes hit Kentucky and five people died, we didn't stop to think that before our modern warning systems the death toll would probably have been 100; we don't remember that we would lose one or two airliners full of passengers each year in wind shear crashes on takeoff or landing - we've only had one in the last 20 years because the meteorologists we are so quick to castigate figured out what a downburst was, how intensely powerful it could be and how to accurately forecast one and get a warning out so that airplanes stayed away from them. We also don't know how stupidly resistant the Federal Aviation Administration was to allowing such warnings to be transmitted or to sharing severe weather information it had with the non-aviation community. Mike Smith tells these stories in a riveting fashion.
Mike Smith had personal involvement in the rapidly developing world of saving lives by forecasting severe weather and warning people where it was going to hit. He writes about it in a style that is exciting; I found myself rescheduling appointments because I wasn't willing to stop reading. When I was done, I was convinced there should be a Nobel Prize for weather analysis and forecasting because it's saved so many lives.Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather OverviewExperience the most devastating storms of the last fifty years through the eyes of the scientific visionaries who took them on and tamed them.
For decades, the author, a pioneering meteorologist, has dedicated himself to saving lives by combining science, experience, and instinct. The struggle to understand nature's fury provides fascinating insights into the natural forces that shape our world, and the turbulent politics that influence our scientific establishment.
Tracing the Herculean effort to improve weather forecasting and advanced warning systems, the author draws fascinating biographical sketches of the scientists behind the breakthroughs, such as Dr. Theodore Fujita, creator of the Fujita Scale for tornado measurement.
With its gripping story-telling approach to major natural disasters, Warnings is narrative nonfiction at its heart-pounding best.
''I highly recommend this exceptional book.'' --Roger Pielke, Sr., Pielke Climate Science blog
''The weatherman's version of The Right Stuff--Mike Smith's Warnings. I recommend it highly.'' --Tom Fuller, The Examiner
''A fascinating journey inside the world of weather and the mind and heart of the meteorologist. A great read for anyone.'' --Bob Ryan, chief meteorologist, WRC TV (NBC), Washington DC, former president, American Meteorological Society
''This book chronicles the remarkable advances that have occurred in meteorology over the past 50 years--not through dry statistics but through very personal stories. The book discusses the virtual elimination of airline crashes due to wind shear and the thousands of lives saved by hurricane warnings. Its primary focus is on severe storms in the Midwestern U.S., but the issues raised about the evolution of forecasting the weather, and the impact those forecasts have on the people and commerce, are much more universal. The narrative throughout the book is engaging and compelling, and I found it very hard to put down after reading just the first few pages. This book is not just for hard-core weather enthusiasts or those who work in weather-related fields (though they will love it). Anyone who has ever watched a stormy sky on warm afternoon or felt moved by the images on the news following the Greensburg tornado or Hurricane Katrina (both of which are covered in this book) will get pulled into the narrative of this book.'' --Keith Seitter, Executive Director, American Meteorological Society Boston

Man vs. Weather: Be Your Own Weatherman ReviewAnyone who knows me personally can tell you that I am a bit of a weather enthusiast. I have been known to sit and watch the weather channel for hours on end. Yes I do realize that that is only acceptable behavior after the age of 80, but what can I say? My name is Holly, and I am a weather addict.
Let me start out by saying that this book is quite funny. It approaches the mundane topic of weather from a really entertaining angle. At the same time it manages to teach about even complex topics in weather. I never cared about the jet stream until I read this book. Now I know exactly how it works and why. I have tried explaining my new found knowledge to others, yet fail miserably, as I cannot serve up the info with such finesse as the author does.
The book is broken up in to chapters, each building upon the last. The first chapter dissects the atmosphere. After reading about the tropopause you will know what you are looking down at every time you get on a plane and look out the window wondering why the clouds seem to be hitting their heads on an invisible ceiling. Feel free to blurt out "Wow! What a great view of the tropopause!" People will wonder if a genius is among them. Then in the end it covers our dysfunctional relationship with weather. Including, but not limited to, the weathers insatiable appetite for human destruction. Smart, funny, well-written and informative, this book is a must. Weather enthusiast or not.
Man vs. Weather: Be Your Own Weatherman OverviewA humorous and practical guide to the history and science of understanding the weather—plus, how to build your own barometer! For as long as man has walked upon this earth, he has been forced to survive under the cruel tyranny of weather. Let's face it: there is no escape. Now, in Man vs. Weather, humorist Dennis DiClaudio offers up the knowledge to beat weather at its own game. Rooting through conventional wisdom, discovered gadgetry, and the advances of science, this book presents the geothermal mechanisms behind weather-related phenomena, the history of humanity's relationship with the climate, as well as the truth surrounding atmospheric aphorisms. Have no fear: By the time you make your way through this book, you will be able to read, understand, and defend yourself against the elements! • Is "Red sky at night, sailor's delight" a helpful saying or just the ramblings of idiotic drunkards who like to rhyme? • What are these Santa Ana winds that blow out warmly from the desert, and who is this hussy for which they are named? • What is this Gulf Stream that flows out from Mexico before crossing the Atlantic toward Africa and Europe, and how can a stream cut through the ocean anyway?

Basic Essentials Weather Forecasting, 3rd (Basic Essentials Series) ReviewWeather forecasting without modern technology (using just the five senses, the way our ancestors did it) is a hobby of mine. I own most of the books on this topic that are available here on Amazon. This book is my favorite. The explanations are relatively easy to understand, and I especially enjoyed the section on "Forecasting from Legends and Lore".Basic Essentials Weather Forecasting, 3rd (Basic Essentials Series) OverviewAn information-packed tool for the novice or handy reference for the veteran.Distills years of knowledge in an affordable and portable book.

Weather: How It Works And Why It Matters ReviewFirst, I would like to comment on the overall tone of this book that discusses one of those topics that often would invoke some form of repulsion by the average layman - Junger has done a marvelous job at engaging the reader through an otherwise lengthy and descriptive piece of literature.
The author leads the reader through the weather journey from his honest personal experiences to the history of Earth's atmospheric evolution, all but topped with curious facts about other planets and the Universe. I really enjoyed the systematic approach he applies in the discussion of Global Warming, the delicate inter relationship that marries the climate and human activities and preventive measures.
However, one huge drawback of this book that now seems to beg you to buy it is the lack of detailed Geographical analyses of mechanisms of the weather machine and their causes. The author tends to gloss over the details (which may be a good thing for some) but offers many examples to support his statements.
What I find particularly refreshing is the section on weather lore. To cite one example, the old saying that when dew appears rain will not come, actually arises from the lack of cloud cover. Comprehensive and light hearted talk about the weather. Thumbs up.Weather: How It Works And Why It Matters OverviewScientists have delved deep into the smallest particles of matter and have extended their view to the far reaches of the universe, but still they are unable to predict the temperature five days hence. In this intriguing book, two experts in meteorology and astronomy take us on a grand tour of Earth's weather. Amid colorful anecdotes of the Galápagos, Siberia, and places closer to home, they describe the factors involved in shaping our weather, from humidity and prevailing winds to air-pressure systems and the causes of seasonal change. They also explore the history of Earth's climate and its pivotal role in the development of life and human evolution. The authors end with a discussion of the major threats to Earth's atmosphere brought on by human activity, including global warming and ozone depletion, and argue that pure science-not politics-should dictate our policy responses.
