DK Eyewitness Books: Natural Disasters ReviewI am a big fan of the Dorling Kindersley 'Eyewitness Books' series. They offer an appealing combination of concise text and colorful images that provide a basic understanding of a particular subject. NATURAL DISASTERS, published by DK in 2006, offers a fascinating if sometimes scary look at the destructive forces mother nature has at her beck and call. While the book is intended for readers 9-12 years old, older readers will also find NATURAL DISASTERS of interest.
After brief sections on our restless earth, author Claire Watts discusses tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides/avalanches, hurricanes/tornadoes, floods, droughts, fires, climate changes, unnatural disasters, diseases/epidemics, and future disasters. Each topic gets at least a two-page spread with basic information on that topic and six-eight b&w and/or color photographs, maps or diagrams showing, for example, what an avalanche in action looks like and its aftermath. Some topics rate additional pages. The tsunami section, for instance, runs to 12 pages. The book also includes an FAQ section, glossary and useful websites but, curiously, no bibliography.
The information and illustrations are appropriate for the intended age level. Some of the images, especially of people in peril, might be too intense for younger readers.
Watts' book would be ideal for students reports and for anyone with a beginning interest in the world of natural disasters, how people cope with them and how nations/agencies work to minimize the damage they inflict. How the Weather Works ReviewThis series of books has a major problem with the experiments. I purchased the entire set to use for home schooling, and when I started doing the experiments with my son ran into a lot of problems quickly. I took the books to a local science shop and they identified that many of the experiments were missing important components. An example: one experiment in one of the books showed how to make a battery using pennies, litmus paper and lemon juice. The battery never worked. According to the local science shop it never would work without some zinc. This was information was ommitted from the book. I found using these books to be very frustrating and wouldn't recommend them to others. However, I do have friends who like them a lot. So, I guess it is just a matter of opinion.How the Weather Works OverviewAn introduction to the weather, filled with hundreds of experiments that let the reader discover for themselves the way the weather works. The book allows the reader to make their own "home laboratory" with available materials from the house and garden. Step-by-step instructions show clearly how to carry out each project.

Wild Weather: Lightning (Hello Reader Science: Level 4) ReviewI thought this book was very well-illustrated for young children. The charts and tables and diagrams were easy to understand, and attracted interest in the text. This was an important book for me to read with my grandchildren because we live in New Mexico, where lightning is an almost daily event. As with the Floods book in this series, it features a female scientist and young girls in the illustrations, which really helps my granddaughters to relate to the information. The science is clear. My granddaughters really grasped the concepts, and could even use the book to observe our lightning storms. For example, the books says to close your eyes right after a lightning strike and you can see the pattern of the lightning, in miniature, on your eyelids. The Handy Weather Answer Book (The Handy Answer Book Series) ReviewThis is indeed a handy book. It's useful to educators and folks of any age who are curious about meteorological phenomena. The book is divided into 11 comprehensive chapters that answer over 1000 questions about the weather in exceptionally clear and simple terms.
Fundamentals are covered first, followed by units on the atmosphere, heat and cold, clouds and precipitation, storms, and phenomena like lightning and rainbows. Next, the roles of land masses and oceans, the moon and sun, and human beings are addressed. The book concludes with chapters on climate change and weather forecasting. Well over 100 color photos liven things up, and dozens of tables provide statistics about every sort of weather under the sun.
When "The Science Teacher," "The Weather Doctor," "Forecast" magazine, the "Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society," and many other authoritative publications and websites recommend this excellent reference work, you can be assured that the information is correct and up-to-date.
I also recommend any of the other titles in Visible Ink's Handy Answer Book series. National Geographic My First Pocket Guides: Weather ReviewThe Audubon First Guide to Weather is one of the best in the series of Audubon First Guides. The book has a decent number of weather formation listings, including: cumulus congestus, cumulonimbus, cirrus, mesocyclones and quite a few others. Stating that the book is kiddish is quite strange, as this book and its content does not seem geared toward kids particularly at all. It is a fine guide for everyone to use in the field.
There is only one, less recent edition of this guide sold on the market. It is leatherback like the advanced Audubon Guides, so it will come in as a useful reference.National Geographic My First Pocket Guides: Weather Overview

Hurricane & Tornado (DK Eyewitness Books) ReviewI am an adult but have read about 35-40 DK Eyewitness books in the past 15 months. I'm catching up with a lot of the science I never learned in school, and the illustrations and simple style that is easy for young readers to understand while not talking down to adults like me are invaluable in building my knowledge of these subject areas.
I have a perverse interest in tornadoes, so I looked forward to reading this book. However, I think a better title for this book would have been "Extreme Weather". Of the 60-some pages of material in this book, only 4 each are devoted to the subjects of hurricanes and tornadoes. The remainder of the book is devoted to weather basics (also covered excellently in the book in this series called "Weather") and other severe and extreme weather conditions.
Despite this somewhat misleading title, I highly recommend this book and all of the DK Eyewitness books that I've read. A somewhat newer book in the series, "Natural Disasters", covers some of the same material plus non-weather-related calamities such as volcanoes, earthquakes, and disease epidemics. "Natural Disasters" was published recently enough to include coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004.Hurricane & Tornado (DK Eyewitness Books) OverviewNew Look! Weather: How It Works And Why It Matters ReviewFirst, I would like to comment on the overall tone of this book that discusses one of those topics that often would invoke some form of repulsion by the average layman - Junger has done a marvelous job at engaging the reader through an otherwise lengthy and descriptive piece of literature.
The author leads the reader through the weather journey from his honest personal experiences to the history of Earth's atmospheric evolution, all but topped with curious facts about other planets and the Universe. I really enjoyed the systematic approach he applies in the discussion of Global Warming, the delicate inter relationship that marries the climate and human activities and preventive measures.
However, one huge drawback of this book that now seems to beg you to buy it is the lack of detailed Geographical analyses of mechanisms of the weather machine and their causes. The author tends to gloss over the details (which may be a good thing for some) but offers many examples to support his statements.
What I find particularly refreshing is the section on weather lore. To cite one example, the old saying that when dew appears rain will not come, actually arises from the lack of cloud cover. Comprehensive and light hearted talk about the weather. Thumbs up.Weather: How It Works And Why It Matters OverviewScientists have delved deep into the smallest particles of matter and have extended their view to the far reaches of the universe, but still they are unable to predict the temperature five days hence. In this intriguing book, two experts in meteorology and astronomy take us on a grand tour of Earth's weather. Amid colorful anecdotes of the Galápagos, Siberia, and places closer to home, they describe the factors involved in shaping our weather, from humidity and prevailing winds to air-pressure systems and the causes of seasonal change. They also explore the history of Earth's climate and its pivotal role in the development of life and human evolution. The authors end with a discussion of the major threats to Earth's atmosphere brought on by human activity, including global warming and ozone depletion, and argue that pure science-not politics-should dictate our policy responses.

There is a lot of information in each page, information about different equipment used to track and measure the weather. Photographs and graphics are used to describe the weather and how to track it. In the back of the book there are pages devoted to making a home weather station to track and record the weather. The book is indexed in the back for easy access to information. It makes the book a good choice to have for easy reference or a young student's weather project. The material is not presented in a boring matter.
