A Field Guide to the Atmosphere (Peterson Field Guide) ReviewThis is a useful weather field guide because it spends most time illustrating regular weather phenomena. By that, I mean it spends most time on the various types of clouds, "garden-variety" thunderstorms, and ordinary optical phenomena like rainbows, irridescence, halo(e)s, and the like - the kind of stuff you're most likely to see if you glance out your bedroom window of a morning, or . . . whatever. (It's hard not to sound corny there!)Also, the text goes into how such phenomena comes about, which is useful.
There are also useful appendices like the Beaufort scale, and tornado safety rules in the back.
The only drawbacks are, the fact that this isn't a full-color guide: the color plates have been segregated to an insert around the middle of the book, which makes up perhaps an eighth of the book - if that (all other photos - the majority of the book - are in much less detailed and descriptive black and white); also, the illustration of severe weather is rather limited. We don't see features of a severe thunderstorm, or satellite images of a hurricane at its various stages of intensity (or an illustrated discussion of satellite pictures in general - this guide may be from 1981, but satellites existed then!), or the forms a tornado can take, or where one can form - we only have photos of distant, non-severe looking cumulonimbus (thunderstorm) clouds, a view of clouds around a hurricane taken from a plane (which isn't the perspective either a satellite or someone on the groud is going to have), and one photo of a tornado chosen for its historical merit only (it being the "first photo taken of a tornado," near Howard, SD on 8/28/1884 - an older photo, taken near either Garnett or Westphalia, KS on 4/26/1884, has since been found). [Regarding the thunderstorm/tornado images, I realize this isn't supposed to be a NOAA spotter's guide, therefore gospel, but a variety of images helps.]

One never ceases to marvel at the consistent way in which we humans seem to be lunging headlong into the ecological abyss. In this wonderful new book by former New York Times reporter Elizabeth Kolbert, the reader is whisked away into a series of field trips into the myriad of places across the globe where the increasing evidence of approaching disaster is being observed, discussed, and reacted to in ways that has to give the reader pause. Eskimos are abandoning a small island in the Artic Ocean even as the surrounding ice cap that once protected from wind and storm damage melts into oblivion as a direct result of the Greenhouse Effect.
Kolbert offer us poignant glimpses at humans forced to confront ugly truths about the nature of the Anthropocene era, that is, that so-far limited expanse of time that humans have inhabited the earth. Presented with the bulk of the evidence, it is hard for an objective intellect to escape the distinct possibility that as a species we seem to be hell-bent on self-destruction. Indeed, the breadth and scope of the manifest effects of climate change on human habitation is breath-taking, affecting societies as far-flung as Netherlands to Siberia, from South Africa to the Great Barrier Reef. She writes wryly about stepping through the looking glass in a conversation with a Washington wonk who attempted to justify the Bush administration's active opposition to both the Kyoto Treaty and any attempt to rework it into a manageable tool to effectively combat the effects of global warming.
It is in such encounters that she discovers her voice and her poignant sense of urgency; if the best educated among us choose to stand in active opposition, what chance is thereto turn this catastrophic change in climate around? Furthermore, in interviewing climate specialists, we discover that the environment is moving rapidly toward disaster, and while there are reasons to hope, there is also reason to view our inaction and our opposition to meaningful global action with alarm. As the former Third World countries like India and China become both more industrial and more consumptive societies, the environment's ability to overcome the cumulative injuries to the earth's biosphere becomes even more difficult to imagine. This book is an easy read, is quite informative, delivered in a reporter's style of succinct and yet comprehensive prose. It does yeoman's service in informing citizens of just how dangerous and calamitous this developing ecological, social, and economic catastrophe truly is. This is a great book, and one I can heartily recommend. Enjoy!

Mike and Eric are two of the finest weather photographers in the world, and this book is essentially a greatest hits collection from their individual catalogs. Every page contains one stunning image after another, carefully reproduced on heavy, quality stock. The book is organized by chase day or event, with about six individual chases from Mike, four solo chases by Eric, and the rest featuring pictures from both photographers, usually from different angles to give real dramatic range to the imagery. Accompanying the photos is text from both describing their forecast process and tactical decisions they made in the field. Since Mike and Eric have different styles of chasing, this makes for an interesting contrast as well as an entertaining and informative explanation for various shots.
The introduction by tornado scientist and longtime chaser Charles Doswell sets the tone, describing the allure of storm chasing and placing Mike and Eric's work in the context of those who came before them. Toward the end of the book, Dr. Doswell provides an explanation behind the science of severe weather, an easy-to-understand and memorable description of how such sudden mountains of air and water appear on the plains.
What I like most about the book is how it reflects the values of my two friends: the spectacle of atmospheric phenomena. Their vision is focused strictly outward, on the subjects of their photographs, such as the classic supercells of the northern plains or LPs in New Mexico, Mike's breathtaking auroras in winter, or Eric's timeless shots of the Mulvane, Kansas white tornado and rainbow.
Most chasers know that Eric passed away in the summer of 2007. This collection of images is the perfect tribute to his career as a storm observer and photographer, both in form and content. Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) ReviewI recently began to pursue a life long interest in learning more about severe weather; it's forecasting and impact on the environment. As my search for materials to help me learn expanded and my research came to its peak, I kept getting the same feedback from all the various web sites and sources. "Pick up anything from Tim Vasquez."
I have looked high and low for anything that didn't require a physics degree to read and I have found that in every single book I have purchased with his name on it. His books have excited me even more about severe weather and led me down the path to becoming a trained spotter with Skywarn. I cannot recommend his books highly enough.
Weather Map Handbook (Second Edition) OverviewThe science of forecasting has not changed, but the Internet and new marvels of technology have completely redefined the process. It's not a rare thing for weather hobbyists and National Weather Service forecasters to get a product from the very same site. With more and more charts and tools appearing on the Internet by the week, how do you make sense of the avalanche of weather imagery and data? Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. The WSR-88D doppler radar, in use by the United States weather services, has played a vast part in the weather information revolution. In the Weather Map Handbook, it gets thirty pages packed with the fundamentals and algorithms of the WSR-88D. Much of this information is obscure and nearly impossible to find. Even the METAR, TAF, SYNOP, and radiosonde formats get their own sections, complete with decoding instructions. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more! Whether you're a hobbyist, private forecaster, a professional, or a student, the Weather Map Handbook is the book you can't be without.

The International Marine Book of Sailing ReviewFor thirty years I sailed as a licensed Captain, teaching students to sail, and I wish I had had Robby Robinson's new book. I looked high and low to find a book that would be useful for the beginners aboard GERONIMO but was never satisfied, so I taught without a text.
The great advantage to Robby's book is that he makes you want to step on board a boat - any boat - and go sailing; and he keeps it simple. "Begin at the beginning. Go sailing. Experience is the best teacher, and it makes the best sailors." When I was a boy my friends and I got into small boats and went sailing anytime anyone would let us. Adults may be more hesitant to take up a new activity, but I have known great sailors who had never seen the ocean until they were full grown.
Robby invites the reader to go sailing, then he tells how to sail in clear, reassuring prose. The illustrations in the book are excellent, but if you only read the text you will understand. Robby tells you how to choose a boat and how to step on board and follow the routine that all sailors use to get underway. The way the book is set up, the beginner can go in stages. He can go sailing, fumble around, go back to the book to clear up his confusion, and then go back out on the water. Every chapter of the book is written to build confidence. Those of us with more experience can use the book as a reference. Sailing instructors can use the book as a lesson plan and have their novice sailors read the book at night.
Once the beginner learns to get underway, enjoy a sail, and return home safely, the sailing can stay reasonably simple or it can get very complicated. Yet as the activity grows in complexity, there is no reason for the novice to get discouraged. As the book proceeds to instruction on safety, navigation, and racing the new sailor is right there and never confused - walk, jog, then run. Robby has the chapters in the right order - learn to sail, learn seamanship and navigation, learn to race, and then go to sea. If you want to maximize the pleasure of sailing, you have to race and hone your skills in competition, and the chapter on racing is excellent. The final chapters are about cruising offshore. Racing offshore is left for more advanced books. Maybe Robby will write one.

The Old Farmer's Almanac 2011 ReviewPublished since 1792, one of the oldest periodicals in the country is still available. I like to keep two of these on hand, this year's and the edition for next. As always, great information and entertainment. The usual holiday and observance times, astronomy guide, monthly breakdowns, a very interesting article on scything, a table of measure conversions, and more.
For an amateur skywatcher, you can't beat the Old Farmer's Almanac for telling you when and where to expect interesting sights, well in advance so you can plan your viewing. If you are a professional astronomer, you should by all means use a dedicated astronomical almanac. For my level, this sort of information is all I need and far cheaper. Yes, it has a lot of ads, but that's the tradeoff for selling this amount of data for less than seven bucks.
For example, I know from my 2010 edition that there will be a full eclipse of the moon December 21st starting at 12:28 a.m. and becoming total at 2:40 a.m. My 2011 edition says the weather at that time should be sunny and warm. Is this weather information accurate? We'll find out! That's half the fun of this book.The Old Farmer's Almanac 2011 OverviewAmerica's best-selling annual publication is also the most beloved: Its name makes people smile and its contents tickle funny bones. Storm Chaser: A Photographer's Journey ReviewJim Reed is a well-known storm chaser, author and weather photographer whose credits include National Geographic and Time Magazine. As a storm chaser and photographer, I have always appreciated Mr. Reed's images and have been eagerly awaiting this book. I was not disappointed. Storm Chaser, A Photographer's Journey is a coffee table book documenting 15 years of extreme weather photography. This volume is really a giant photo album with some amazing images. He has selected a variety of hauntingly beautiful photos of severe weather. Of course, my favorites are the tornadoes, supercells, lightning and hail. He has several tornado images though I would like a few more. Mr. Reed captures the dark intensity of tornadic storms contrasted with verdant fields or angry reds and yellows of the setting sun. He has chased hurricanes including Katrina. The photos illustrate the intense rain and wind associated with those tropical storms. There are many other images of weather including ice storms, drought, floods, dust storms and snow-covered landscapes. Examples of rare phenomena include hoarfrost in Kansas and aurora viewed from South Carolina. Although the focus is on the photos, the text is very interesting with descriptions of his storm chases, journal entries and interactions with meteorologists, storm chasers and those affected by the weather. I really enjoyed reading about Mr. Reed's early experiences with storms, photography, and writing and how those experiences led him to storm chasing and weather photography. The book is organized by season. Although there is a general theme of global climate change affecting weather patterns, the book is not a technical analysis. Those wanting detailed information on tornado formation, weather forecasting or global warming should look elsewhere. This is an art-book with gorgeous weather photos and landscapes; beautiful to view with an underlying warning about changing climate. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in weather or who can appreciate the sublime beauty of the natural world. Weather Map Handbook ReviewI do a lot of sailing, and really needed something to guide me through all of the available charts. I'm glad to say that this title measures up in every regard. It covers each type of weather chart, one by one, such as the Surface Chart, 700 mb Chart, and so on, presents an example, and scrutinizes the purpose and utility of each one. It even covers forecast models and radar products. This really is a unique (and welcome) departure from the format of other weather books. I found that the Weather Map Handbook gave me some excellent insight into understanding the weather systems that I have to deal with on the Gulf Coast. My only beef with the book is that it needs a few more marine-oriented charts. Some color maps would be nice, but this doesn't really detract from the book. It's designed especially for the Internet, showing how to predict weather from scratch using the same charts that professional meteorologists use.A complete listing of weather map symbols, iconographs, and decoding information fills the pages.It's perfect for hobbyists, pilots, students, broadcasters, and storm chasers.Using a double-page format, the Weather Map Handbook demonstrates nearly every type of weather map, image, and product in common use. An overview of each item's origin, purpose, shortfalls, and tips are outlined. Standards for analysis symbology and chart markings are summarized. The surface, 850 mb, 700 mb, 500 mb, and 300-200 mb charts get two pages each, complete with philosophy, objectives, and techniques for each chart. Thickness, isentropic, and Q vector products get their own sections. Topping off the book is an appendix with surface and upper-level station plot models, a vast technical glossary compiled from the depths of the NWS, SPC, and NCEP, and much more.

Hunting Nature's Fury should definitely appeal to many readers for assorted ages and backgrounds.
For those of us who know Roger Hill, and have chased with him, it should be no surprise that it reflects his unequaled passion for the joy of storm chasing. His well known enthusiasm comes through as he recounts his interesting background and especially as he relates a sampling of his assorted storm chasing adventures.
The chasing stories in Hunting Nature's Fury accurately reflect what chasers do when they chase storms and give a real sense of why we do it.
It is a fast, entertaining and easy read for all.

Weather: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) ReviewDespite the very bad reviews in here, I decided to go to Barnes and
Noble, took a look at the book, and bought it in there. After moving to Seattle, I wondered why the weather in Northwestern America might be like this, and Katrina desaster was also a motivation for me to want to understand how weather works. And I have no desire to try to understand it in expert level (nor do I have time to do so).
First of all, this book is not for weather majors or experts.
this book is for general readers who don't have a clue about how weather works but want to know. For that purpuse, I haven't found any better book than this. I'm not a geologist or weather expert. So, I can't say how accurate this book is. However this book explains things so well with a lot of beautiful pictures. Saying that this book doesn't have any content, all misinformation, etc. is simply over-exaggerating minor mistakes that any books might have. Go to the bookstore and see it yourself. You will love this book.
Even though you don't like the content for any reason, the beautiful pictures themselves will worth the money. However, there is no reason why casual readers who want to know about whether would not like the contents of this book. Don't let skeptic's over-exaggerated nitpicking discourage your owning this wonderful book.
This is one of the books from which you can learn science without studying, and with pleasure. And you don't even need to have any science background to read this book. All you need is curiosity.
