Snow Crystals (Dover photography collections) ReviewW.A. Bentley spent fifty years painstakingly recording snowflakes, frost, rime, sleet and ice in all its forms. Even before "Snow Crystals" was published in 1931, his work was well known, and so popular that eventually a donor provided the (apparently large) amount of money needed to assemble this beautiful collection.
There is a small amount of text at the front of the book, which is moderately interesting. It contains a description of how to take these pictures for yourself, if you'd like to; and a classification of the kinds of snowflake and other ice forms depicted here. The bulk of the book, however, is made up of well over two thousand black and white photographs, the vast majority of them of single snowflakes. You can get an idea of what they look like by clicking on Amazon's image of the cover picture, above; in the book, the images are white on black. You may also want to visit snowflakebentley.com, which contains more examples, and more information about Bentley himself (there is almost none in this book). In most or all cases, Bentley went to the trouble of making a duplicate negative of each snowflake and then cutting out, by hand, the finely detailed image, so that the background to the picture would be pure black.
The results are spectacular. The snowflakes are ethereally beautiful, and the variety is just stunning. However, in case it's not clear from what I've said so far, this is a contemplative book. It's not a book to read: it's a book to browse through, put away, and get out again another snowy day. Children will like it, but just to glance at, not to go through steadily.
Recommended.Snow Crystals (Dover photography collections) OverviewOver 2,000 photomicrographs of snowflakes, plus slides of frost, rime, glaze, dew, and hail. Introduction by meteorologist W. J. Humphreys discusses techniques of photographing snow crystals, science of crystallography, classification, and markings. "Page after page of patterns, one more beautiful than the next." - Country Journal. 202 plates.

The Snowflake ReviewIt is hard to think of a natural phenomenon that has more intrinsic delight and fascination than a snowflake. Sure, the things pile up and please skiers and dismay drivers, but taken one by one, each snowflake is not only pretty, it has enough complexity and mystery about it to delight any careful observer. In _The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty_ (Voyageur Press), two careful observers have documented what intrigues them about snowflakes. Kenneth Libbrecht is head of the physics department of Caltech, and he not only rushes out with a magnifying glass when it snows, he grows snowflakes artificially in his lab. Patricia Rasmussen is a photographer who started taking pictures of snowflakes with her own equipment and then used Libbrecht's special apparatus. This is a book a little larger than a hundred pages, but the pictures are elegant, and the text tells the current explanations, as far as we now know them (there are still mysteries), of why snowflakes look the way they do.
The famous snowflake pictures of William Bentley inspired Rasmussen to start taking pictures of snow. Bentley's pictures are carefully reproduced white-on-black images, but Rasmussen has experimented with colored light to give multicolored pastels that shine on and through the hundreds of crystals depicted here. There are plenty of the six-armed variety, but also triangular snowflakes, and twelve, eighteen, or twenty-four armed ones, as well as tiny ice crystals shaped like needles, prisms, barrels, or bullets. can form at the right conditions. Different humidity and temperature produces the shapes. For the familiar snowflake, each arm experiences the same microclimate, so each changes in the same way. One arm of a flake thus does not "know" what the other arms are doing so it can turn itself out identically; they are all simply products of identical environmental history. As can be suspected, snowflakes that develop in the same regions have the same general design. But of course, everyone knows that no snowflakes are identical. Libbrecht considers whether this question is really true, and finds it cannot be answered without close considerations of "What is a snowflake?" and "What is identical?"
Snowflake science is here presented clearly and with good humor by someone who obviously loves his work. Libbrecht demonstrates that since a snowflake is a billion billion water molecules grabbed from the atmosphere, some of them are from your own exhalations. He does the calculations to show that about a thousand of the water molecules in every snowflake you see in this book (and of course, any other snowflake) come from you. "Thank you for your contribution," he says, "and keep up the good work." Jaunty and illuminating scientific descriptions, plus the most beautiful pictures of snowflakes ever made, make this a volume that can be valued for eye-catching brilliance or mind-engaging elucidation. The Snowflake Overview

Splish, Splash, Spring ReviewThis book was a little disappointing. I purchased it because my students were learning about Spring. I found that some other Spring-themed books, especially those by Lois Ehlert, were much better. This book did not keep my students' attention and, while the rhyming is cute, it makes very little sense for young children.Splish, Splash, Spring Overview

Out of the Blue: A 24-Hour Skywatcher's Guide ReviewI first read this book over five years ago, and have kept it handy ever since. Yesterday, I saw my first circumhorizontal arc in the sky over Port Townsend, WA. Naylor's Out of the Blue had a beautiful picture of this phenomenon and a great description. Every atmospheric condition you could imagine is discussed and illustrated here. It is written for an educated layperson and its description of the physics will not offend a real physicist nor confound an amateur. The topics covered include daylight effects, shadows, mirages, sunset and sunrise phenomena, rainbows, the night sky, planets, stars, comets and meteors.
I bought this book on amazon several years ago, and have recently recommended it to a friend. Revisiting its listing on amazon, I find that no one has reviewed this wonderful book. Hard to believe! If you are a student, amateur astronomer (like me), or just a curious person you would enjoy this book.Out of the Blue: A 24-Hour Skywatcher's Guide OverviewWhy is the sky blue and why are sunsets red? When can I see a rainbow? Why is the moon sometimes visible in daylight? In Out of the Blue skywatcher John Naylor offers practical advice about where and when you can expect to see natural phenomena, what you will see and how to improve your chances of seeing it. Naylor takes in both the night and the day sky, and deals only with what can be seen with the naked eye. Drawing on science, history, literature and mythology, and assuming only basic scientific knowledge, Out of the Blue is for everyone who enjoys being outdoors and who feel curious or puzzled about things optical and astronomical. John Naylor was born in England, but spent his childhood in Peru. A graduate of London University with a degree in philosophy, he teaches physics at a secondary school in London.

Henry Baldpate and His Treetop Friends ReviewThis is a great addition to any collection. Looking for the positive in everyone is something that I always try to do. Instilling this value into the little ones is also extremely important. Great book!Henry Baldpate and His Treetop Friends OverviewHenry Baldpate gets along well with other birds and creatures. In fact, he has many friends and neighbors who share the same territory. There is a great peace that exists in the community in which they live. There are no great disagreements at any time. Each friend or neighbor seems to appreciate the other for his or her unique characteristics. This is a story about the Baldpate (a.k.a. White-crowned pigeon), a beautiful and shy bird that has a serious fear of people. The Baldpate is a very elusive bird that is by no means easy to catch off guard. It is always alert and is almost always found in the top of the highest trees. The story takes place at a nature-friendly resort on the beautiful island of Jamaica. It is a story that will educate and fascinate the young, and even those who are older.

Weather Guide with Phenomonal Weather Events: 2010 Wall Calendar ReviewI have been getting this calendar for more years than I can remember. At first, I used to purchase it directly from the original company, then from a calendar company but the last two years, from Amazon. I always order 2. One for me and one for my son who takes his to work. Hard to describe this calendar. The photos are truly beautiful. Every day has an interesting tidbit listed of some type of weather happening from another year. In between each month, two pages are devoted to weather facts, climate data, etc. I guess I can best describe it by saying that my son says many of his co-workers are intrigued by this calendar and want to know where he gets it. You don't have to be a weather "geek" to like this calendar but if you are, then you really would want one.Weather Guide with Phenomonal Weather Events: 2010 Wall Calendar Overview

My Brother Loved Snowflakes: The Story of Wilson A. Bentley, the Snowflake Man ReviewThe more well known children's book, Snowflake Bentley (Caldecott Medal Book), may have won the Caldecott award, but I must confess to enjoying this book much more. "My Brother Loved Snowflakes," told from the brother's perspective, shows the human side of people who may be different than others, and makes the quest for knowledge about people, about us and our quest to learn about the world we are blessed with. Rather than playing up Willie Bentley as an eccentric, it shows him as unique, and shows children that for all his differences he gave much to our wealth of knowledge and above all the people in the story -- even the people who attend a lecture he walks out on without a word because of the snow, as very accepting that Bentley is who Bentley is and that there is nothing wrong with that. Since our children will meet so many other children who are vastly different than them, some of them seemingly eccentric, this is a subtle reminder that we all have value and that the difference is part of what makes the world interesting. We need that diversity.
This book will have an added interest to homeschoolers because Bentley and his brother are taught by their mother, a woman who encourages her son's love of learning -- and the father, though he doesn't "get" all this snowflake stuff, still strives to respect his son's desires and loves and encourage him and do what he can regardless.
We made this into something a snowflake learning fest. Bentley's photos of snowflakes are available in an inexpensive format, Snowflakes in Photographs. More modern and beautiful are the books by Kenneth G. Libbrecht. We chose The Snowflake. This had enlarged photographs and my first grader used pattern blocks to recreate some of them, as well as making paper snowflakes for the window. We also took black paper (left out in the car so it would be cold) to catch snowflakes and look at them with a magnifying glass. We will be revisiting "snowflake studis" later on when he is older to get more into the science of them, as is covered in the Libbrecht book.
Overall, this book was great for supporting our curriculum, which presents science and math in hands on ways and includes a lot of biography with explanations of how scientists go about "doing science" -- but which is to also remind us that science without the human element is purposeless, and sometimes even dangerous. My Brother Loved Snowflakes: The Story of Wilson A. The Little Book of Snowflakes Review"The Little Book of Snowflakes" by Kenneth Libbrecht is a diminutive companion of sorts to the larger "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty", which Libbrecht wrote with Patricia Rasmussen. It contains 140 beautiful photographs of snow crystals and snowflakes, taken by Kenneth Libbrecht and his traveling photomicroscope. 45 of the photographs are full page, which in this case means 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) square. I'm not sure if any of the photographs duplicate those found in "Winter's Secret Beauty", but most of them don't. If you haven't seen either of these books, the photographs are so beautiful that they must be seen to be believed. The text in "The Little Book of Snowflakes" is sparse. It consists of basic information from the author on how snowflakes are formed and 30 quotations on the subjects of snow and nature by an assortment of notable names, from Aristotle to Hsiao Tung to William Blake to Albert Einstein to Yogi Berra. As with it's companion book, the price of "The Little Book of Snowflakes' belies the quality of its contents. It makes a wonderful gift for the photographer, nature lover, aesthete -or anyone who has had too much or too little of the white stuff outside. Kenneth Libbrecht puts snow in a new light. For those who couldn't get enough of the photographs in "Winter's Secret Beauty", this little book is a welcome addition.
Kenneth Libbrecht is a physics professor at CalTech, and he has an excellent web site: www.snowcrystals.com . Whatever else Libbrecht may accomplish in his field, the publication of "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty" and "The Little Book of Snowflakes" seem to ensure his place in popular history as a "snowflake man", an epithet previously earned only by Wilson Bentley a century ago. If you like this book, be sure to check out "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty" for more photographs and detailed information about the formation and identification of snow crystals. The Little Book of Snowflakes OverviewFollowing the success of "The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty", this companion gift book features new, super-detailed photographs of snowflakes, detailed captions containing the science behind their beauty, and literary quotes relating to snow and nature.

Eyelids of morning; the mingled destinies of crocodiles and men: Being a description of the origins, history, and prospects of Lake Rudolf, its peoples, deserts, rivers, mountains, and weather ReviewThe hardcover version is replete with the most bizarre photos of crocodiles, giant fish, and local tribal culture. A biological effort at determining a croc population veers into a "Heart of Darkness-esque" tome where "civilized man" is on display as mach as the lake denizens being studied. Check out the chapter describing a night on Snake Island and you will find new appreciation for your own safe backyard. Under the Snow ReviewA week ago I woke up to a snow-covered yard. When, I opened the front door, my younger son pelted me with a snowball. By 9:00, the sun had melted the snow, but it still reminded me that soon everything will be UNDER THE SNOW. So if you have a curious child who wonders what's happening under the snow in a field, or under the snow in a forest, or under the snow on a pond, or under the snow in a wetland, be sure to check out this book. Restless Skies: The Ultimate Weather Book ReviewThis is a great book for people mildly interested in weather phenomena all the way to hard core 'weather junkies'. Paul Douglas, who is very popular in the Twin Cities, covers a wide range of weather topics, focusing on extreme weather conditions that grip our attention, like tornadoes and hurricanes, and even addresses politically sensitive issues like global warming. His style is sufficiently scientific to satisfy serious weather buffs, yet the book is an easy read. I learned a lot of details about weather phenomena that actually should help me understand the next extreme weather situation in my area. The photos are spectacular. My kids, who study weather in elementary school, really enjoy the book too. Cool photos.Restless Skies: The Ultimate Weather Book Overview

Tigers In Red Weather: A Quest for the Last Wild Tigers ReviewPadel's book is certainly interesting and informative but, if you're concerned about the future of Asia's wildlife (not only tigers), you come away with the melancholy, somewhat depressing impression that population growth and habitat destruction do not bode well for the wild creatures of our largest continent.
I agree with another reviewer that the story would certainly be better without the inclusion of details from the author's personal life, particularly the angst over the break-up with a lover. Consisting of chapters pieced together after numerous trips to south, east and southeast Asia, "Tigers in Red Weather" covers a lot of ground, assessing from Padel's own treks and interaction with wildlife conservationists, the state of wilderness preservation in such far-flung locales as India, Bangladesh, Russia, China and Indonesia. Each time she's back in England, however, we're subjected to awkward meetings, meals and cocktail party banter with the ex-boyfriend. Sorry but as a reader I couldn't care less and that's certainly not why I bought the book.
There is some charm in Padel's descriptions of walks in tropical rainforest and I could certainly relate, as a neophyte outdoorsman, to the "creeped out" factor of running across pythons, spiders and scorpions which, as is often the case, appear when least expected. Admittedly an amateur trekker at best, the author manages to convey what these exotic trips would be like for the average Westerner reading from a cushy armchair. The most valuable contributions of "Tiger's in Red Weather," however, are the tales about the dedicated, incredibly hard-working, isolated scientists, conservationists, rangers and others who devote their lives to saving not only "charsimatic megafauna" such as tigers, leopards, bears and elephants but the trees that harbor them and the deer, pigs and other prey they feed upon. One can only admire the sense of stewardship that drives these people. Often underfunded and performing thankless tasks (especially concerning local inhabitants who are sometimes downright violent), the work of Padel's heroes is truly worthy of commendation. This goes for the native rangers and forest wardens as well. Unfortunately too many succumb to bribes, threats and the lure of materialism but a large enough percentage hang in there despite low (or zero) pay, violent death courtesy of heavily armed poachers, primitive living conditions and isolation from their families.
The stars of the book, the tigers, are predictably rarely seen. I won't give away how many of these magnificent creatures Padel manages to spot on her far-ranging adventure but suffice it to say that the reduction in numbers is very disheartening. Far more often scat, pugmarks and other signs of their presence are the only clues that particular forests and preserves harbor any beasts at all. In many ways the appendix sums up the situation as it devolves a year or so after the author's journeys and it's worse than ever. One wonders how much further down the path of extinction we've gone since the publication of the book.
A theme that permeates this book is the short-sightedness of humankind and the frustrating, almost hopeless task that confronts those who dedicate their lives to fighting rapacious, self-serving greed. The fact that China is largely responsible for the vast majority of illegal tiger products (skin, bones and other parts) is particularly enraging. One wonders, if the demand is so "essential," what on Earth do they think will happen once the tigers are all gone? Will human beings cease to exist? Hardly. Will sexual behavior disappear for lack of aphrodisiacs made from tigers and other endangered animals? I think we all know the answer. This mentality is hard to fathom but it goes on and on. The same goes for the last old-growth forests in the world. Only 4% of India is set aside for the preservation of wildlife but even that seems too much for some. Helpfully, Padel provides a list of organizations and contact information at the end of the book where readers can contribute to honest and reliable groups that actually do some good.
Overall, however, this is a much needed book, shedding light on a subject that too often is given short shrift in mainstream media. It forces one to think about the future of the planet and contemplate where we'll be in the next century. What with the current focus on global warming and all the environmental consequences that entails, we're not left with a good feeling at all. I'm glad to say that I lived when wild tigers still roamed the Earth. How much longer they'll do so is anyone's guess.Tigers In Red Weather: A Quest for the Last Wild Tigers Overview

Storm Watchers: The Turbulent History of Weather Prediction from Franklin's Kite to El Nino ReviewFor a meteorologist, this is clearly a must read if you're at all interested in knowing more about some of the most influential people in our field. The author obviously has done considerable homework and made some of the pioneers in this field come alive, instead of just being names and old b&w photographs. Since the book is unprecedented and I didn't know many of these people personally, it's not possible for me to say how accurate these word descriptions are, but they have the "ring of truth" to me. Some very interesting parallels can be drawn from the past to the present with the information in this terrific book!Storm Watchers: The Turbulent History of Weather Prediction from Franklin's Kite to El Nino OverviewA lively, inspiring account of the pioneers who sought to accurately predict the weatherBenjamin Franklin . . . James P. Espy . . . Cleveland Abbe . . . Carl-Gustaf Rossby . . . Jule G. Charney . . . just a few of the remarkable individuals who struggled against formidable odds to understand the atmosphere and predict the weather. Where they saw patterns and processes, others saw randomness and tumult-and yet they strove to make their voices heard, often saving lives in the process.Storm Watchers takes you on a fascinating journey through time that captures the evolution of weather forecasting. From the age when meteorology was considered one step removed from sorcery to the modern-day wizardry of supercomputers, John Cox introduces you to the pioneering scientists whose work fulfilled an ancient dream and made it possible to foretell the future. He tells the little-known stories of these weathermen, such as Ptolemy's weather predictions based on astrology, John Finley's breakthrough research in identifying tornadoes, and Tor Bergeron's new techniques of weather forecasting, which contributed to its final worldwide acceptance.Filled with extraordinary tales of bravery and sacrifice, Storm Watchers will make you think twice the next time you turn on the local news to catch the weather report.

Weather ReviewThis book has wonderful photos of every type of weather from clouds, sun dogs, rainbows, hail, freezing rain, and on and on. Each description is only a page long and includes a photograph. It's easy to understand and doesn't get into too much detail. My 6 year old, although she didn't understand the text, got this book out of the library and liked it so much she wanted a copy of her own -- she loved looking at the different photos. And as an adult, I had to agree with her, it's great just to thumb through as well as read the specifics.Weather OverviewText and photographs examine weather elements including temperature, humidity, clouds, thunder, lightning, rain, and snow, as well as forecasting and climate.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Book of Clouds ReviewWe bought this book after having looked through it in a store -- we thought we'd look at several before purchasing to compare the images and text. After pouring over 5 books of comparable content, Day's book was the clear favorite because of the variety and quality of images, the skillful organization, and the easy writing style that accompanied the images.
An excellent book for those with an interest in weather -- and for an artist searching for the archetypes from which interpretations can be drawn.
Beautiful images! The Book of Clouds OverviewNew in PaperSee the sky as you never have before. Using a series of his awe-inspiring images, photographer and scientist John Day--who has a Ph.D. in cloud physics and is known round the world as "The Cloudman"--introduces us to earth's great skyscape. His spectacular portfolio of pictures captures a variety of cloud forms and shapes, ranging from cottony-soft cumulus clouds to frightening, whirling funnels, as well as a number of optical effects, such as coronas and halos, seen in the heavens above. A magnificent cloud chart; an explanation of clouds formation; hints on forecasting, observing, and photographing clouds; and his "Ten Reasons to Look Up" teach us to use our inner eye to really perceive those familiar fleeting forms.

The Cloud Collector's Handbook ReviewI was looking for a way to connect with my 10 yr old grandson. This book
has been just the thing. We have been able to use the book to gain points as
we "collect" different types and formations of clouds. We compare notes and meet
at McDonalds to discuss and see what we have collected. I have learned alot about
clouds and have come to appriciate them more. The book is well written and the
pictures are great. There is even a "cloud" web site to go to. Share a cloud
with your children or grandchildren. It's fun!!The Cloud Collector's Handbook OverviewThe perfect incentive for keeping your head in the clouds, The Cloud Collector's Handbook is a whimsical guide to the wonders of the sky. Throughout, author and cloud expert Gavin Pretor-Pinney catalogs a variety of clouds and gives readers points for spotting them and recording their finds. This fun and useful book features gorgeous full-color photographs that showcase a new type of cloud on every spread, from fluffy cumulus to the super rare horseshoe vortex to the wispy noctilucent clouds that hang at the fringes of space. Sure to be a hit with both aspiring and seasoned cloud gazers, this clever handbook will have everyone looking up.

Weather Guide with Phenomenal Weather Events: 2011 Wall Calendar ReviewThis is an annual purchase for me since heaven knows when. It's always terrific. This years front cover shows a 'wedge' tornado directly on a dirt road, coming toward the photographer, someplace I wouldn't like to be. I can't imagine my wall behind my computer without it.Weather Guide with Phenomenal Weather Events: 2011 Wall Calendar Overview
