A Place Where Hurricanes Happen ReviewThis is the story of four friends, Adrienne, Keesha, Micheal and Tommy, who live on the same New Orleans street.
I thought the first picture book that dealt with hurricane Katrina would focus on the hurricane. I am glad I was wrong, I like this much better.
The reader gets to know the four friends and their community before Katrina . The connection will stay long after the hurricane is gone, as the friends and their community are coming back together.
Waston's free verse is beautiful she makes the four friends as real as they can be. Strickland helps to bring the friends, the storm and New Orleans alive with her illustrations. Watson and Strickland have come together to create a lovely picture book.

and I see the whole block swimming in water
Furniture, clothes and toys are swirling in the flood
Roofs are crumbling and windows are shattering
Big winds have come and trees are breaking
And all I can see is more water rising
So I look away and I squeeze Jasmine's hand
real tight because now I am scared too.
I probably should not have shared the whole verse, (but I love it) I also know the text without the illustrations is only half the story. You definitely want to see whole picture, its gorgeous and filled with emotion. This is one of those picture books, that I appreciate more each time I look at it. And I can't stop looking.

Hurricane Book & CD (Read Along Book & CD) ReviewThe book Hurricane by David Wiesner was an excellent book. It teaches children that you don't have to always have the new hi-tech toys to have fun. All you need is your imagination. I would recommend this book to all ages. It was about 2 brothers who are waiting for a large hurricane to arrive in their town. When the storm finally hits both of the boys get really scared. After the hurricane lets up and is over the boys notice that there is a large tree that fell down right next to their house. It wasn't their tree it was the neighbors but they decided to play on it one day because they were extremely bored. They played on the tree so much that it became their little adventure world. They would spend as much time as they could with that tree. They felt safe and protected when they would play. But one morning the boys awoke to the sound of chainsaws and axes hacking away at what sounded like... A TREE!!! Could it have been their tree???Hurricane Book & CD (Read Along Book & CD) Overview

Otis and the Tornado ReviewI was so excited to see that a second otis book was being released that i did pre-order it for my boys (4 and 2 1/2). This book is similar to the first - great story, amazing illustrations, cute/happy ending. My oldest is scared of thunderstorms and everytime there is a wind storm he asks if a tornado is coming (not quite sure why...) so i was a little nervous that this would be too scary for him...while he does show nervousness (partly due to the tone and inflection i tend to read the scary parts with) He slept fine and continues to ask to read the tornado otis book over and over. The general story line is that otis and all his friends are scared of the mean bull on the farm - they try to befriend him, but nothing doing...when the tornado comes otis leaves his safe place to go and help the bull still trapped in his pen...they both make it to safety, just in time, and the bull changes his ways and becomes a friend to otis and all the farm animals. Loren Long is a great author and would highly recommend both otis books!!Otis and the Tornado OverviewOtis and his farm friends are enjoying a summer's day playing their favorite game, follow-the-leader. The Magic School Bus Inside A Hurricane ReviewI'm a kid and watch the Magic School Bus on TV. The books are even better! When Arnold gets lost in a hurricane on one of Ms.Frizzle's wacky field trips, the kids need to know the parts of a hurricane to find him. I thought it was creative and funny to include a radio that knew everything and could dance. By the time Ms.Frizzle's class goes on the real field trip, they have become experts on hurricanes. The weather team is amazed at the intelligence of the students. This book is great because it's not like those other books that lag on and on about one subject without any excitment. The Magic School Bus books make subjects like hurricanes, fun to learn about . I liked how the kids knew more than the weather team. Katy and the Big Snow Book & CD ReviewReaders familiar with Virginia Lee Burton will know her penchant for bringing inanimate objects to life. This is a wonderful addition to those books, perfect for young children between the ages of 2 and 6. This story was a favorite in my household when I was a child, much to the dismay of my mother who wished we would select anything else for a change! (She got sick of reading it more than once a week) ^_^
The star of this book, in case anyone hasn't guessed, is a tractor named Katy who is a bulldozer in the summer and a snowplow in the winter in the city of Geopolis. Geopolis could be any small city. When a huge blizzard leaves several feet of snow behind, it is up to Katy to save the day, getting everyone where they need to go in Geopolis. As the only vehicle that hasn't been stopped by the snow, Katy must prove her toughness and sense of duty by spending the whole day clearing the streets, earning a satisfying and well-needed rest at the end of the story. That's really the whole story. Sound a bit uneventful? Well, yes. There's never a doubt that Katy will succeed in her task. There isn't a great deal of interaction with human characters besides getting them where they are going. So for a child who wants a complex plot more along the lines of MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL, they may be disappointed. But, as I said, this book was a favorite in my house, and there were several reasons why.
Repetition: stories for younger children with regularly repeated phrases like this one are worthwhile to the listener, if not always the reader. Throughout the book the main line-`"Follow me," said Katy'--is repeated every time Katy happens across more citizens in need. Children will soon be providing that line on their own in the course of the story. Maps: This was my first real introduction to maps, and it's a great tool for enabling your child to understand how maps work as they follow Katy's route through Geopolis. They can trace her path on the page, and find the places she's headed to or hasn't plowed out yet. You can begin to discuss concepts of North, South, East and West with them, and maybe even break out maps of your own city or town for their perusal and comparison. The pictures are simply drawn with lovely borders, and their young audience easily understands them. Snow: It's a great introduction to what can happen during a snowstorm and the kind of trucks needed to clear the way. It's a crisis without ever being a scary crisis for kids and still addresses the problems of a blizzard-getting a patient to the hospitals, getting the firemen to a fire, getting the kids to school.
For the most part, I don't recommend this book for older children. Even five and six year-olds might have outgrown this, unless they're reading the book on their own. But it's a great book to read to younger children, especially if you live in a snowy clime! If this is your first experience with this author, I highly recommend you check out MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL and THE LITTLE HOUSE.

What Makes the Seasons ReviewI think this is a nice book for toddlers and preschoolers. It is a nice read-aloud, with a cute rhyme and I think it does a pretty good job answering the questions it raises.
An example of what you will find follows:
The colored leaves dance all around.
But WHY do leaves fall to the ground?
In all the leaves on all the trees
Are tiny tree food factories.
Leaves use sun to make the food.
When there's less sun, leaves com unglued.
Four Stars. [B-]. Artwork is bright and attractive. Nice rhyme makes for a good read-aloud. The book provides a nice introduction to the why and wherefore of the seasons: earth's movement around the sun; rain freezing to make snow, etc.What Makes the Seasons Overview

Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain (Reading Rainbow Books) ReviewI really love the book "Bringing The Rain to Kapiti Plain," by Verna Aardema. I have enjoyed it so much that I am planning to give it as a gift to my sister who has two young children, ages 4 and 7. This is a simple story about a cattle herdsman and his wish for rain on the African plain. The narrative structure of the story is based on a sequence of events that builds suspense and interest in children until the end of the story. This is a memorable story; it is very simple to understand and has a powerful musical quality that, as a young adult, I enjoy reading aloud. The rhymes and rhythms are so strong that all young children will be wide eyed with suspense and interest until the very end of the story. I particularly enjoyed one line where the author rhymes "fat" and "Ki-pat": "So the grass grew green/ And the cattle fat!/ And Ki-pat got a wife/ And a little Ki-pat-." This story is suitable for young children because its tone is happy. It deals with the relationship of humans with water, plants and animals. Scientifically, it is unconceivable, but 4- to 8-year-old children do not have to understand the facts of science. From this book, however, they will learn about the connection between humans and nature by enjoying the colored pictures. The pictures are so vibrant that it is easy to imagine the world of Ki-pat. As an adult, I enjoy this book because it describes the cycle of life in a very interesting way. Readers of all ages will see that human life is totally dependent upon nature, and the existence of human beings without nature is nearly impossible. Readers will also learn how the lives of humans and animals are dependent on rain; people and animals need each other and every part of nature for their perfect existence. I highly recommend Verna Aardema's "Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain" to anyone who has young children and is looking for a book that illustrates the relationship between nature and human beings. The Weather (My First Reader) ReviewThis book is an excellent book on weather seen through the eyes of a young Asian girl through the windows in her home. I really like books that grow with your child. This book would be interesting to a 3 year old and then can grow to a my first reading book for your child. The front page before the title page shows the 47 words used in this book. The illustrations are simple but cute.I am shocked at the price, as of right now $18 for this book is really high, I know it's a hard back book..... I'd buy it for $8 less but not $18. We found this book at our local library.The Weather (My First Reader) OverviewYoung children wil love larning to read with these storybooks. Groundhog Weather School ReviewThe little white rabbit was all curled up in his bed. He had his night cap on, his yellow striped jammies and even had his slippers on. It was February 2nd and he turned on his television to watch the "Groundhog Day Forecast." The reporter wished everyone a happy holiday and said, "I do not see my shadow. That means spring is here." YES! Bunny hopped out of bed, threw on his Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip flops and was ready for some nice weather. Just for good measure he put his sunnies one so the glare wouldn't bother his eyes. When he stuck his head out of his burrow . . . WHOA! Snowflakes were whirling around. So much for spring and that hog's forecast.
Rabbit, pig and monkey wrote letters of disappointment to the groundhog weather forecaster at HOG TV. Rabbit wanted to know if he "Could get more groundhogs to help" in the following year. Groundhog agreed. Something had to be done and done fast. He sent out invitations to Groundhog Weather School. If the applicant was a mammal, furry, lived in burrow, was a rodent, a herbivore and hibernated they were in! Everyone was checking off the list. "Check no no no no no." Mule wasn't going. "Check check check check rats! rats!" No rats in that school, but wait, there was one fellow who checked all the boxes. It was a little groundhog and he was headed to school to learn about the weather!
This is a unique and wonderful way for young children to learn about the fascinating world of weather forecasting. My favorite little "scene" was when the little groundhogs were seated at their desks waiting to learn when they discover Skunk was in their midst. He claimed he was a "foreign exchange student." In this book youngsters can painlessly learn a bit about the groundhog family, famous "Hognosticators" like Punxsutawney Phil, animal weather predictors, famous weather men, how groundhogs build a burrow, and many more interesting factual materials. The art work, needless to say, is very appealing and meshes perfectly with the text. If you are anxious for spring to arrive and have a little time on your hands, now is the time to really learn what Groundhog Day is all about!
