Climate (Our Fragile Planet) ReviewClimate is a great book to learn about the climate in one easy to read book. The author does a great job of explaining the details of the causes and effects of the world, and refers to several scientific studies that help put together this wealth of information.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the age group of 6th grade to 12th grade or an adult. This book makes you more aware of all the things we do in our daily lives and how it is effecting our world.
I even asked the author to explain a table to me a little better and it was answered on www.ExplainMyBook.com.Climate (Our Fragile Planet) Overview

Prairie Storms ReviewHave you ever sat outside to watch the dark clouds build up and a storm roll in? This book about the prairie or grassland habitat details the different kinds of storms that normally come in each month of the year on the prairies and what various sorts of animals in that habitat do when they occur, such as the prairie chicken in a January snowstorm, the sand crane in a March tornado, the red fox in a May rain shower, the striped skunk in a July dust storm, the burrowing owl in an August cloudburst, and the bald eagle in a November ice storm. Other animals mentioned include the ground hog, prairie dogs, white tailed deer, the earless lizard, the cougar, and the bison. Other weather phenomena discussed include fog, a flash flood, a thunderstorm, heat lightning during a drought, hail, and blizzards. By the way, do you know what grassland prairies are called in South America?
The six "For Creative Minds" pages in the back feature more information about the grassland habitat, finding grasslands around the world, a weather and seasons matching activity, and questions about weather and seasonal changes relating to both animals and humans. The publisher's website offers even more online resources for parents and teachers with sixty to seventy pages of cross-curricular teaching activities and three interactive reading and math quizzes all related to Prairie Storms and aligned to state standards. There are so many benefits in a book like this--familiarizing children with the months and seasons of the year, introducing them to the different kinds of inclement weather, and helping them understand more about the various sorts of wildlife which inhabit the prairie. Darcy Pattison's lyrical prose text and Kathleen Rietz's realistic illustrations make this celebration of the great American prairies a real winner.
Prairie Storms OverviewWhere the land is flat, the sky's dome becomes a blank canvas forstorms. In this lyrical book, experience a year of prairie storms fromthe point of view of native wild life who must shelter, hide, escape, disappear, endure and withstand those storms. Watch the sand hill cranes avoid the tornado, the red fox thrill to asoft evening shower, the earless lizard shimmy as it disappears beneaththe burning sands of summer, the cougar dodge hail stones, the baldeagle shed sleet and the bison face into the teeth of a blizzard andstand defiant. Each month features a storm typical of that season and aprairie animal in its normal habitat. The prairie biome or ecosystem isexplored through its weather, especially its storms. Told in lyricalprose, this story is a celebration of the grasslands that dominates thecenter of American lands. For Creative Minds: lesson plans for teachers or parents included. Publisher's site has additional lesson plans. K-3 science, language arts.

My Brother Loved Snowflakes: The Story of Wilson A. Bentley, the Snowflake Man ReviewThe more well known children's book, Snowflake Bentley (Caldecott Medal Book), may have won the Caldecott award, but I must confess to enjoying this book much more. "My Brother Loved Snowflakes," told from the brother's perspective, shows the human side of people who may be different than others, and makes the quest for knowledge about people, about us and our quest to learn about the world we are blessed with. Rather than playing up Willie Bentley as an eccentric, it shows him as unique, and shows children that for all his differences he gave much to our wealth of knowledge and above all the people in the story -- even the people who attend a lecture he walks out on without a word because of the snow, as very accepting that Bentley is who Bentley is and that there is nothing wrong with that. Since our children will meet so many other children who are vastly different than them, some of them seemingly eccentric, this is a subtle reminder that we all have value and that the difference is part of what makes the world interesting. We need that diversity.
This book will have an added interest to homeschoolers because Bentley and his brother are taught by their mother, a woman who encourages her son's love of learning -- and the father, though he doesn't "get" all this snowflake stuff, still strives to respect his son's desires and loves and encourage him and do what he can regardless.
We made this into something a snowflake learning fest. Bentley's photos of snowflakes are available in an inexpensive format, Snowflakes in Photographs. More modern and beautiful are the books by Kenneth G. Libbrecht. We chose The Snowflake. This had enlarged photographs and my first grader used pattern blocks to recreate some of them, as well as making paper snowflakes for the window. We also took black paper (left out in the car so it would be cold) to catch snowflakes and look at them with a magnifying glass. We will be revisiting "snowflake studis" later on when he is older to get more into the science of them, as is covered in the Libbrecht book.
Overall, this book was great for supporting our curriculum, which presents science and math in hands on ways and includes a lot of biography with explanations of how scientists go about "doing science" -- but which is to also remind us that science without the human element is purposeless, and sometimes even dangerous. My Brother Loved Snowflakes: The Story of Wilson A. Weather: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) ReviewDespite the very bad reviews in here, I decided to go to Barnes and
Noble, took a look at the book, and bought it in there. After moving to Seattle, I wondered why the weather in Northwestern America might be like this, and Katrina desaster was also a motivation for me to want to understand how weather works. And I have no desire to try to understand it in expert level (nor do I have time to do so).
First of all, this book is not for weather majors or experts.
this book is for general readers who don't have a clue about how weather works but want to know. For that purpuse, I haven't found any better book than this. I'm not a geologist or weather expert. So, I can't say how accurate this book is. However this book explains things so well with a lot of beautiful pictures. Saying that this book doesn't have any content, all misinformation, etc. is simply over-exaggerating minor mistakes that any books might have. Go to the bookstore and see it yourself. You will love this book.
Even though you don't like the content for any reason, the beautiful pictures themselves will worth the money. However, there is no reason why casual readers who want to know about whether would not like the contents of this book. Don't let skeptic's over-exaggerated nitpicking discourage your owning this wonderful book.
This is one of the books from which you can learn science without studying, and with pleasure. And you don't even need to have any science background to read this book. All you need is curiosity. As a reader, I thank authors to create this wonderful book.Weather: A Visual Guide (Visual Guides) Overview

Weather ReviewThis book has wonderful photos of every type of weather from clouds, sun dogs, rainbows, hail, freezing rain, and on and on. Each description is only a page long and includes a photograph. It's easy to understand and doesn't get into too much detail. My 6 year old, although she didn't understand the text, got this book out of the library and liked it so much she wanted a copy of her own -- she loved looking at the different photos. And as an adult, I had to agree with her, it's great just to thumb through as well as read the specifics.Weather OverviewText and photographs examine weather elements including temperature, humidity, clouds, thunder, lightning, rain, and snow, as well as forecasting and climate.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Understanding Weather and Climate, Third Edition ReviewI bought the 3rd Edition because it was so inexpensive. Having read the usual popular books on weather, I was interested in a little more science behind the facts. I can not describe the "Eureka" moments that came in every chapter. For 2 -3 bucks plus postage it really delivers. I see 10 times more in the sky than I ever did before. (Surface maps will never be enough again.)Understanding Weather and Climate, Third Edition OverviewThis meteorology book focuses on explanation about the processes that produce Earth's weather and climate. It emphasizes a non-mathematical understanding of physical principles as a vehicle for learning about atmospheric processes. Additionally, difficult-to-visualize topics are reinforced with a series of software tutorials presented on a CD-ROM packaged with the book.Accompanying CD-ROM is available featuring Tutorials, Interactive Exercises, and illustrative movie loops all keyed to the book. Also, this book includes up-to-date coverage of severe weather events For professionals in the meteorology field.

Man vs. Weather: Be Your Own Weatherman ReviewAnyone who knows me personally can tell you that I am a bit of a weather enthusiast. I have been known to sit and watch the weather channel for hours on end. Yes I do realize that that is only acceptable behavior after the age of 80, but what can I say? My name is Holly, and I am a weather addict.
Let me start out by saying that this book is quite funny. It approaches the mundane topic of weather from a really entertaining angle. At the same time it manages to teach about even complex topics in weather. I never cared about the jet stream until I read this book. Now I know exactly how it works and why. I have tried explaining my new found knowledge to others, yet fail miserably, as I cannot serve up the info with such finesse as the author does.
The book is broken up in to chapters, each building upon the last. The first chapter dissects the atmosphere. After reading about the tropopause you will know what you are looking down at every time you get on a plane and look out the window wondering why the clouds seem to be hitting their heads on an invisible ceiling. Feel free to blurt out "Wow! What a great view of the tropopause!" People will wonder if a genius is among them. Then in the end it covers our dysfunctional relationship with weather. Including, but not limited to, the weathers insatiable appetite for human destruction. Smart, funny, well-written and informative, this book is a must. Weather enthusiast or not.
Man vs. Weather: Be Your Own Weatherman OverviewA humorous and practical guide to the history and science of understanding the weather—plus, how to build your own barometer! For as long as man has walked upon this earth, he has been forced to survive under the cruel tyranny of weather. Let's face it: there is no escape. Now, in Man vs. Weather, humorist Dennis DiClaudio offers up the knowledge to beat weather at its own game. Rooting through conventional wisdom, discovered gadgetry, and the advances of science, this book presents the geothermal mechanisms behind weather-related phenomena, the history of humanity's relationship with the climate, as well as the truth surrounding atmospheric aphorisms. Have no fear: By the time you make your way through this book, you will be able to read, understand, and defend yourself against the elements! • Is "Red sky at night, sailor's delight" a helpful saying or just the ramblings of idiotic drunkards who like to rhyme? • What are these Santa Ana winds that blow out warmly from the desert, and who is this hussy for which they are named? • What is this Gulf Stream that flows out from Mexico before crossing the Atlantic toward Africa and Europe, and how can a stream cut through the ocean anyway?

What Will the Weather Be (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) ReviewThis is another great book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science series. Younger children (like my son who was age 4 when we first began with this book) and older children (who are reading on their own) will be delighted and educated with this book. Whimsical illustrations demonstrate complex scientific information in a very approachable manner.
In this book children will learn overarching concepts of meteorolgy and actual scientific terminology in a progressive manner. Children will learn about:
1. Fronts (Cold and Warm) and their affect on weather.
2. How air pressure is determined and what happens in Low Pressure vs. High Pressure. They learn about barometers.
3. Wind speed and direction, including names of instruments (wind vane and anemometer).
The colorful illustrations and simple diagrams reinforce the infomration contained in the book and help children understand the basic concepts of a weather formation.
Diagrams include:
1. Fronts & Front Formations
2. Water Vapor
3. Weather Maps
4. High & Low Pressure Systems
This book is an excellent addition to your science library. Perfect for budding scientists...or to generate a budding scientist by feeding their minds with sound teaching about the world around us rather than empty stories. What Will the Weather Be (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2) OverviewWeather
Will it be warm or cold? Should we wear shorts or pants? Shoes or boots? Read and find out why the weather is so difficult to predict.

The Weather Identification Handbook: The Ultimate Guide for Weather Watchers ReviewI am reluctant to criticize any book for being something other than what I expected it to be. I was looking for a 'basic meteorology' book. I wanted a better understanding of fronts, high- and low-pressure areas, wind patterns, world weather patterns, the influence of ocean currents, etc.
If you're looking for weather principles, this book is not for you. Unfortunately (for me), the book takes a taxonomic approach to weather. Approx. 2/3rds of the pages are dedicated to identifying and classifying various cloud formations and optical phenomena. If you read assiduously, you'll never mistake stratus for stratocumulus, cirrus for cirrocumulus, and, aha, there's some altostratus undulatus! And you'll learn of Corona, Glory, and Heiligenschein. Broad weather patterns and principles get short shrift, if they get any shrift at all. About page 178 (out of 192, incl. bibliography, credits, and index) you'll finally get into a discussion of air masses, fronts, depressions, etc.
Publishers are usually responsible for choosing the title. This book is mis-titled.The Weather Identification Handbook: The Ultimate Guide for Weather Watchers OverviewWhat does it mean when there is a corona around the moon? How do you tell the difference between stratocumulus and nimbostratus clouds? THE WEATHER IDENTIFICATION HANDBOOK is an essential guide to the many different types of phenomena that may be observed, and also gives brief details of the weather that may be expected. The following topics are covered in a reader-friendly format: ØCloud classificationØHow to identify different cloud types and how they relate to forthcoming weatherØHow clouds are formedØOptical phenomenaØPrecipitationØWindØSevere weatherØWeather systemsØSatellite images and weather mapsFull of beautiful color photographs and diagrams, THE WEATHER IDENTIFICATION HANDBOOK is essential for the outdoor photographer, adventurer, or meteorological enthusiast. It is also perfect for any parent whose child asks the proverbial question, "Why is the sky blue?"
