Global Physical Climatology, Volume 56 (International Geophysics) ReviewThis is the most thorough, most rigorous, well-written textbook in global systems climatology that I've seen. If you're bright, interested, and aren't allergic to equations (you don't need to read them to understand the book, you just have to not freak out) then this text will teach you more about the planet as a dynamic system than any other that I've seen -- plus, unlike most texbooks, it's not chuck full of stupid mistakes. I've used it in my upper division climatology class since it came out.Global Physical Climatology, Volume 56 (International Geophysics) OverviewGlobal Physical Climatology is an introductory text devoted to the fundamental physical principles and problems of climate sensitivity and change. Addressing some of the most critical issues in climatology, this text features incisive coverage of topics that are central to understanding orbital parameter theory for past climate changes, and for anthropogenic and natural causes of near-future changes--Key Features* Covers the physics of climate change* Examines the nature of the current climate and its previous changes* Explores the sensitivity of climate and the mechanisms by which humans are likely to produce near-future climate changes* Provides instructive end-of-chapter exercises and appendices

Atmospheric Modeling, Data Assimilation and Predictability ReviewI had this book for courses in numerical weather prediction and in data assimilation (DA), and was far from impressed.
While the historical overview in Chapter 1 is a pleasant read, the litany of errors in equations begins quickly in Chapter 2. Terms as simple as in the equations of motion are incorrect. Some things are unforgiveable in a textbook, and an error in a sophomore-level equation is one of them.
I can manage the mess of linear algebra in the text. However, Kalnay's writing style is more of one suited for lecture notes; she jumps around from topic to topic, and provides very little transition in some spots. Other locations in the notes that need further explanation (and probably would get it, if students could stop the author and ask questions), are left too vague. This is not the way to write a very good textbook, and I do not believe this book is anywhere near "very good."
I give it two stars, however, because it's the most current book in the field; there aren't many other places to turn for discussions on Kalman filters, etc. That said, if you are looking for a practical discussion of NWP or DA, or how to implement a DA scheme, you'll have a difficult time weeding it out of this book.Atmospheric Modeling, Data Assimilation and Predictability OverviewThis comprehensive text and reference work on numerical weather prediction covers for the first time, not only methods for numerical modeling, but also the important related areas of data assimilation and predictability. It incorporates all aspects of environmental computer modeling including an historical overview of the subject, equations of motion and their approximations, a modern and clear description of numerical methods, and the determination of initial conditions using weather observations (an important new science known as data assimilation).

Mesoscale Meteorology in Midlatitudes (Advancing Weather and Climate Science) ReviewFinally, a book on mesoscale meteorology that appears to have received the attention in preparation that we are use to seeing nowdays for textbooks assigned in courses with large numbers of students (i.e. chemistry, physics, biology, etc.) This book is beautifully typeset, well written, and includes many fabulous color graphics.Mesoscale Meteorology in Midlatitudes (Advancing Weather and Climate Science) OverviewMesoscale Meteorology in Mid-Latitudes presents the dynamics of mesoscale meteorological phenomena in a highly accessible, student-friendly manner. The book's clear mathematical treatments are complimented by high-quality photographs and illustrations. Comprehensive coverage of subjects including boundary layer mesoscale phenomena, orographic phenomena and deep convection is brought together with the latest developments in the field to provide an invaluable resource for mesoscale meteorology students.
Mesoscale Meteorology in Mid-Latitudes functions as a comprehensive, easy-to-use undergraduate textbook while also providing a useful reference for graduate students, research scientists and weather industry professionals.
Illustrated in full colour throughout
Covers the latest developments and research in the field
Comprehensive coverage of deep convection and its initiation
Uses real life examples of phenomena taken from broad geographical areas to demonstrate the practical aspects of the science

Mid-Latitude Weather Systems ReviewCarlson has written a profound book on synoptic systems. Unlike many meteorology texts, this book stresses physical understanding of synoptic systems through practical and lucid mathematical treatment. The physical insight Carlson provides so eloquently makes this an essential read for every student taking synoptic lab. Carlson explains abstruse topics (thermal vorticity for example) in a lucid and cogent manner. There are numerous case studies which are covered in depth and flow perfectly with the points Carlson wants to convey. The book does assume the reader has atleast a fundamental understanding of dynamics and thermo.
I would consider this book to be a perfect supplement to Bluestein's Vol I, Chapter 5, which is a rigorous mathematical treatment of QG theory. It would also serve well as an alternative view of synoptic systems to Bluestein's Vol II since the way they approach topics are considerably different. This book is essential reading for the student and the professional in the field. I would consider this to be the best book I have ever read on the subject despite a few obvious errors. Below are a listing of the chapters in the book:
1. Introduction and mathematical definitions
2. Vorticity and vertical motion
3. The vorticity and thermodynamic equation
4. QG forcing of vertical motions and surface pressure tendency
5. QG energetics
6. Evolution and motion of mid-tropospheric waves: Barotropic viewpoint
7. Simple dynamic models of wave/cyclone Development: Baroclinic Viewpoint
8. Alternative expressions for vertical motion and divergence
9. Some additional dynamic aspects of the baroclinic wave/cyclone. Effects of friction, terrain, and diabatic heating
10. The evolution of cyclones
11. Evolution of the wave/cyclone during cyclogenesis
12. Optimum wavelength and growth rate of baroclinic waves
13. Airflow through mid-latitude synoptic-scale disturbances
14. Aegeostrophic and the dynamics of fronts
15. Upper tropospheric fronts and jet streaks
16. Mid-tropospheric fronts, elevated mixed layers and the severe storm environment
Mid-Latitude Weather Systems OverviewMid-Latitude Weather Systems is the first text to make extensive use of conventional weather charts and equations to fully illustrate the behavior and evolution of weather patterns. With the use of well-documented case studies, Toby Carlson has achieved a unique presentation of selected concepts, which facilitate a clear interpretation of this active and challenging area of study. Early chapters focus on the mathematics necessary to construct simple models which are subsequently used to describe and interpret the movement, evolution, and structure of particular weather patterns. Particular meteorological phenomena are discussed using schematic illustrations in conjunction with actual weather charts for explanation. The charts are an original and powerful feature of the text and display parameters routinely issued by the United States Weather Service.Presenting a fusion between the mathematical and descriptive fields of meteorology and integrated coverage of synoptic and dynamic approaches, Mid-Latitude Weather Systems provides students with an invaluable course text and reference source to gain an unclouded appreciation of the underlying processes and behavior of mid-latitude weather patterns.
