I liked the way the characters were developed,the family relationships and people overcoming personal challenges. The Weather in the Streets (Virago Modern Classics) ReviewRosamond Lehmann's _The Weather in the Streets_ is a sequel to her earlier book, _Invitation to the Waltz_. Here, Olivia, who in _Invitation to the Waltz_ was a nervous debutante, is now older, though perhaps not much wiser; separated from her husband, she falls in love with the married brother of an old friend and embarks upon a tempestuous affair. Compared to its predecessor, _The Weather in the Streets_ is darker, but more powerful and more complex. Olivia's inner monologues are brilliantly done, and Lehmann even slips into the first person for one section of the book, though the change is so unobtrusive that I almost didn't notice it. Of all of the writers I've read, Lehmann is one of the best at getting into her character's thoughts and showing us their experiences and emotions honestly and directly.The Weather in the Streets (Virago Modern Classics) OverviewTaking up where Invitation to the Waltz left off, The Weather in the Streets shows us Olivia Curtis ten years older, a failed marriage behind her, thinner, sadder, and apprently not much wiser. A chance encounter on a train with a man who enchanted her as a teenager leads to a forbidden love affair and a new world of secret meetings, brief phone calls, and snatched liaisons in anonymous hotel rooms. Years ahead of its time when first published, this subtle and powerful novel shocked even the most stalwart Lehmann fans with its searing honesty and passionate portrayal of clandestine love.

A Student of Weather ReviewThis little story was truly a wonderful surprise. I expected a cozy little family saga, but got much more. This quiet unassuming novel about ordinary people builds slowly into a gripping tale that once it gets going is impossible to put down.
It begins in 1938 on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada with two lonely motherless sisters, nine years apart in age and worlds apart in looks and personality. Norma Joyce is small, dark, wiry, homely, inquisitive, provocative, and restless, while older sister Lucinda is a ravishing redhead, quiet, serene, the hard working homemaker for father and younger sister. Although Norma is just a kid, when Maurice Dove, a 'student of weather' visits the farm, both sisters, each in their own way, fall desperately in love with him, a love to last a lifetime, but with tragic consequences. The presence of Maurice will be the wedge that drives the sisters apart and alters the family fate, although the personality of each character will also determine the outcome of the story, which later shifts to Ottawa and then alternates between Ottawa and New York City.
What makes this novel stand out from the crowd aside from its careful plotting and lovely descriptive passages about foliage, flora, and of course weather, are the ways in which the author makes brilliant use of small details of personality and psychology to drive what would otherwise be an ordinary story into high gear and to create unforgettable complex characters. She gets it right on target, too, so much so, that the reader feels that he/she is a witness to real peoples' lives. This book is one of my top picks of the year!A Student of Weather Overview

Peck is the award-winning writer of more than twenty-five novels for young readers. By no means do I want to suggest that this is solely a female's book. It's a terrific story to read aloud with the whole family.

It's a rugged life of early morning chores and long days of work. It's a life without electricity or anything frivolous or luxurious. The children only wear shoes for special occasions. But everything changes when their aunt sends them train tickets and invites them to Chicago for a week to visit the World's Columbian Exposition. Stormy Weather: A Novel (P.S.) ReviewI loved Enemy Women, her civil war novel,so was thrilled to see she had written another book. I just finished reading and want to tell everyone who will listen to me to read Stormy Weather. The setting is harsh (1930s Texas during the drought and the Great Depression) but the writing is so lyrical and beautiful. The characters are fully developed and likeable. And the love story and tension she creates between the two is delicious agony for the reader. This was a reading experience where I had to stop often just to soak up the images she created. I rarely write book reviews, but was moved to do so for this wonderful book!Stormy Weather: A Novel (P.S.) Overview
