Wide Blue Yonder: A Novel ReviewTelling a cohesive story from the narrative perspective of multiple characters is one of the toughest tricks in fiction. One voice usually outshines the others. Wide Blue Yonder is the glorious exception that proves the rule. All four voices are not only distinctive and wonderful but they balance and inform each other as well, spanning the spectrum from a young girl's teenage ennui to a con man's deepening madness. That Thompson's prose is crisp and often startlingly inventive is icing on a cake that is already deep and rich and completely satisfying.Wide Blue Yonder: A Novel Overview

Earthquake Weather: A Novel ReviewSet in the tension-filled days following the deadly L.A. temblor of 1994, Terrill Lee Lankford's Earthquake Weather is a biting satire of Hollywood cast in the form of a murder mystery.
As a longtime filmmaker, Lankford knows the business from the inside out, and he uses that knowledge to flay Tinseltown's overinflated egos and pretensions with razor-sharp wit.
His main character, Mark Hayes, is a development executive stuck in a dead-end job working for a tyrannical movie producer. When the producer is found dead floating his pool, the list of suspects seems to include just about everyone in Hollywood, including Hayes.
Hayes sets out to find the killer himself, along the way encountering a rogue's gallery of showbiz malcontents that will have readers shaking their heads in disbelief, all the while laughing out loud.
Earthquake Weather is the best Hollywood novel since Michael Tolkin's The Player -- and a fine crime story besides.

Greasing the Pinata (Cape Weathers Investigations) ReviewCape Weathers is my Harry Potter. Just like my daughters so loved jumping into J.K. Rowling's world of a young wizard at Hogwarts I find the same joy slipping into Tim Maleeny's land of a wisecracking detective in Chinatown. My girls have Harry, Hermione and Ron in an old school outside London. I get Cape, Sally, Sloth and Linda in parts of San Francisco that won't show up on your AAA Guide. "A Cape Weathers Investigation" (as the series is called) is a place full of dark alleys and back rooms brimming with gangsters, good guys, codes and rituals. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in the series and highly recommend Greasing the Piñata. Have fun. I know I did.Greasing the Pinata (Cape Weathers Investigations) Overview

Fair Weather Reviewi loved this book, the two worlds come alive as you are surrounded by medieval mystery. i couldn't put it down and was sorry to get to the end, i wanted it to keep going! a must read, you wont regret itFair Weather OverviewFAIR WEATHER BY BARBARA GASKELL DENVILThe girl is frightened. Molly cannot see the man, but his voice, barely more than a whisper, seems sinister.Ever since childhood, Molly has been haunted. The place of her involuntary visions is dark and its people are troubled by hunger and poverty. This is the distant past - England of a thousand years ago, medieval shadows during the reign of King John. But it is murder within her own modern life which changes everything. Molly is drawn into the police investigation, and pulled between past and present, each now as disturbing as the other, she becomes confused. Her personality splits. Then an identical murder in the distant haunted past of her dreams joins the two worlds in equal danger. Molly passes between. Now she travels time but is followed by some horror which kills and mutilates at will. She has opened the door to evil and the man, his voice the rustle of dead leaves, is always there. Yet Molly discovers far more than fear and misery. She discovers a whole new life, and a love she could never have imagined. Now she no longer wants to return - but she must.

Stormy Weather ReviewIf you believe that there's a little good in everyone, then Stormy Weather and Carl Hiaasen are not for you.
Stormy Weather is classic Hiaasen. His writing is so sarcastic and unrestrained by reality that it reminds me a little of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or Neil Stevenson (Snow Crash). Interestingly, these are science fiction authors and Hiaasen doesn't write science fiction, but, like these science fiction writers, Hiaasen's writing is modern and clever and his imagination knows no limits. His books are parodies of human nature, especially greed and stupidity, sort of like Voltaire's Candide. After painting such surreal pictures of a cast of very selfish characters, often criminals, Hiaasen then draws upon some Dante as he assigns the characters to their inevitable and well-earned unique circles of hell (that's usually in Florida involving water, alligators, or at least a storm). It says something about a writer when his best known hero is a one-eyed crazy man who lives in the everglades but used to be the governor of the great state of Florida.
If you like the sarcastic social comedy of George Carlin, the ironic wit of Steven Wright, and the slapstick of Peter Sellers, then you will love Carol Hiaasen's Stormy Weather. If you find Carlin offensive, Wright unfunny, and Sellers overrated, then you're going to hate Carol Hiaasen.
If you're new to Hiaasen's books, Stormy Weather is a good place to start. My favorite Hiaasen books are: Strip Tease, 1993; Stormy Weather, 1995; Lucky You, 1997; Sick Puppy, 2000; and Skinny Dip, 2004.
