Jolted: Newton Starker's Rules for Survival Review
Arthur Slade is an award winning author. His honours include: Governor General's Award, Mr. Christie's Book Award, Saskatchewan Book Award, and Red Maple Honour Book. This book is both shocking and electrifying in its tale and the mastery in telling it.
Our hero is more than a little unusual for he is Newton Stalker. He is the second last surviving Stalker, for his whole family has been decimated by lightning strikes. Having recently lost his mother, he moves to the Jerry Potts Academy of Higher Learning and Survival in Moose Jaw. It is a school far more entertaining than Hogwarts. The school's motto is: 'Survival Through Fierce Intelligence'. The board considered all factors in allowing Newton to attend and even upgraded all of the buildings' lightning rod protection.
The cast of characters is zany and fun - from Newton's only surviving Stalker relative, his Great Grandmother Enid who is 102 and lives in a retirement home in Moose Jaw, to Newton's first friend Jacob Edward Clarke, an aspiring author, to his antagonist Violet Quon, a daughter of a Mountie with some pugilistic skills, to the unique headmaster, a giant of a man, who is always in a kilt and lumberjack shirt, Mr. McBain.
This book deals with issues like death and grieving. It also deals with the story of coming of age, and finding your place in the world. The book is like a cross between Edgar Allen Poe, Rudyard Kipling and C.S. Lewis. It is wonderfully-written, greatly entertaining and I could not put it down. Slade presents unique characters in unusual situations and does so in a way that draws the reader in and causes us to cheer for them as the story progresses. Arthur Slade is one of my favorite authors writing for youth today, I rank him up there with Kenneth Oppel, Patrick Carman and Laurie Halse Anderson. The only thing I regret is how short the book was, and how many things it leaves unanswered. I can only hope we see more books set at the Jerry Potts Academy, and we meet Newton Stalker again.

The Prodigal Mage (Fisherman's Children) ReviewI absolutely loved Kingmaker/Kingbreaker, and I really wanted to love The Prodigal Mage as well. The things I loved about the previous novels don't hold true in this book. I loved Asher's character and really understood where he was coming from in The Innocent Mage and The Awakened Mage. I liked his attitude and ability to set everyone straight. In The Prodigal Mage he comes off as a bitter old man. Asher and his wife argue and fight nonstop in this book. It really bothered me. When they aren't arguing with each other, they are yelling at their kids. Have you ever had to sit and listen to a couple argue with themselves and yell at their kids for long periods of time? If you have, I'll bet you didn't enjoy it. Well that's what you are in for with The Prodigal Mage. Asher doesn't want his children to use bad magic, but he won't explain to them why. So of course, being kids, they do it anyway. When Asher's son Rafel is told not to go into the whirlpools or over the mountains, of course he wants to. It's what kids do. I have to say that most of this book is arguing and debating about the same tired issues. We knew the world wasn't going to be wonderful after the end of The Awakened Mage, and the problems the world faces in The Prodigal Mage are predictable. Of course the two races are going to fight for supremacy and not work together. Of course the people will expect the all powerful Innocent Mage to fix all of their problems in an instant. Of course not everyone trusts Asher. Sigh. The inaction and slowness of Kingmaker/Kingbreaker did not bother me at all because I loved the characters. Even without the characters there was a meaningful plot. I can't say the same about The Prodigal Mage. The characters are all extremely grating, and there is no plot to speak of, just danger. As other reviewers have said, this book is mostly setup, so don't expect any kind of conclusion here. The ending was a bit too predictable to me, and feels like a repeat of the previous novels. I don't think I want to continue with this series, though it pains me to say so since I really do love the world created. The problems the people deal with are real, and they bicker and complain just like real people. On one hand realism is nice, on the other hand if I wanted to hear people complain I would go to a city council meeting, because that's what this book feels like, one big complaint fest. The Prodigal Mage (Fisherman's Children) OverviewMany years have passed since the last Mage War. It has been a time of great change. But not all changes are for the best, and Asher's world is in peril once more. The weather magic that keeps Lur safe is failing.Among the sorcerers, only Asher has the skill to mend the antique weather map that governs the seasons, keeping the land from being crushed by natural forces.Yet, when Asher risks his life to meddle with these dangerous magic, the crisis is merely delayed, not averted.Asher's son Rafel inherited his father's talents, but he has been forbidden to use them. With Lur facing devastation, however, he may be its only hope.

Storm Runners Book 2: The Surge ReviewBy This Kid Reviews Books! Find me on the web!
You may think that if you're a kid in the middle of a hurricane - your bus crashed, you nearly drowned, you survived an alligator attack, and everything is flooding - that things can't get much worse, right? Wrong. Chase, Nicole, and Rashawn thought the answer was "right."

Chase, his Dad and, Tomas, his Dad's partner, travel to where natural disasters happen and make their living by helping to rebuild after the disaster happens. Chase's father always made sure he was away from the center of the disasters, but this time the storm shifted! Now Chase and his friends, Nicole and Rashawn are in the middle of it! They thought they were safe when they reached Nicole's house but her family owns a farm but this is no ordinary farm. It is a farm where Nicole's family keeps their circus animals when they are not traveling with the circus and now some of the animals are loose. An angry leopard, that could kill them with a pounce, is running amuck and a lion that just mauled its trainer is loose, too. To top things off, the SURGE from lake water is flooding the farm. They are cold, wet, hungry, hurt and may be cat food! Will they survive the hurricane?

This book is the 2nd book in the series and it was even better than the first one (Storm Runners)! The 3rd book is called "Eruption" and it will be published March 12, 2012 (AHK! TOO LONG TO WAIT!). I like Tomas the best because he seems like a great friend, especially to John and Chase Masters (Tomas is John's best friend and business partner). I recommend "The Surge" to fans of adventure, action, thrills, and Roland Smith. The book is very suspenseful and you never exactly know what's going to happen next! I already pre-ordered my copy of Eruption, I'm not going to tell you how Chase's day gets EVEN worse but I'll give you a hint -think VOLCANO!

After reading a bunch of Mr. Smith's books (Legwork, Cryptid Hunters, Tentacles, The Storm Runners Series) Roland Smith has become one of my favorite authors. I am going to read some more of his older books!
Storm Runners Book 2: The Surge OverviewMaster of middle-grade adventure Roland Smith returns with a second installment in this fast-paced action series.
Chase and his friends Nicole and Rashawn have just survived Hurricane Emily, the storm of the century, but their troubles are just beginning. Though they've made it to the safety of Nicole's family's farm -- the winter home of the Rossi Brothers Circus -- the flood waters are rising and they need to reach higher ground. The circus's lions have escaped their cages, and a mean and unpredicable leopard is also on the loose. And then, of course, there's the problem of the wildlife preserve next door! Have Chase and his friends lived through a terrifying night only to face a new danger?

Tempest ReviewI really enjoyed this book. I cold not put it down. I liked the theory about the Tempest. I hope to hear more from this author. I would reccomend this book to Young adult and adult readers.
First we have Janelle who you can't help but root for. She moves to Florida and all of a sudden she is very strong and strange things are happening to her when she touches ocean water. She has a birth right that her mother expects her to follow through with but she does not want to. When she moves to Flordia it happens to be during Hurricane Gary. Then we meet Gary who lives with his Guardian. He is sixteen. And happens to come out of the eye of the Hurricane. He ends up in a hospital and on the run from his guardian. Where he seems to run into Janelle alot.
This story has love, action, adventure. Alittle bit of everything. I could not get the story out of my mind when I was not reading it. I hope to see a sequel in the future.Tempest OverviewBook 1 of the Destroyers SeriesSixteen-year-old Janelle never thought the gray spiral birthmark on her arm meant anything special. That is, until she meets Gary, a boy her age with a birthmark exactly like hers. Gary's attractive, brooding, and perfectly normal...except for the fact that he materialized out of a dangerous hurricane right in front of her. Janelle's certain of only one thing. Gary's mark-and hers, too-mean something, but he's reluctant to tell her what. At last she squeezes the truth from Gary about their markings. And the truth is utterly terrifying: Janelle and Gary are more connected to the destructive power of nature than she ever dreamed possible. And learning the truth about herself is only the start of her nightmare. 2010 Amazon Breatkthrough Novel Awards Semifinalist"Meteorology may seem an odd literary motivation, but this novel puts weather at the center of a solid fantasy-adventure."--Publishers Weekly

Earthquake Weather ReviewI'll say this now, if you're sitting here shopping for new books and you've heard a little bit about this Tim Powers guy and you want to give him a shot because everyone says he's really good (and he is) and this is the book that you want to use as an introduction to him . . . you're doomed. There's just no good way to put it. For the newcomer, unless they're really good at reading between the lines, this book is going to come across as impenetrable. Not that it isn't good, but new readers are going to feel like they've missed something. Powers doesn't do many sequels to his books, most of his stuff is standalone, but this time he decided to merge some threads from other novels. In the novel prior to this Expiration Date, he introduced some urban fantasy stuff about ghost swallowing and the general rules about haunts and so on, as well as introducing Koot Hoomie and his adopted parents, Pete Sullivan and Angelica. Meanwhile in the now classic (and written some time ago) Last Call, Powers told the story of Scott Crane and how he became the Fisher King, the ruler of the West Coast (and so on and so forth). So this novel is basically a sequel to both those novels as Powers rams the two plotlines together. What happens is that Scott Crane is murdered by a woman apparently possessed by ghosts and Kootie is tapped to be the next king. However he's too young and not really prepared for it and so one of the Crane's loyalists, Arky, comes up with a plan to restore him to life. Confused yet? What follows then is a narrative that seems both ponderous and breakneck as new characters start to mingle with old, with two new catalysts for the plot, Janis Plumtree (the murderer) and Sid Cochran, who just lost his wife and has some history with the god Dionysus. Plumtree is supposed to be possessed but is mostly just someone with Multiple Personality Disorder, constantly switching from one to the other (in a way that reminded me of Crazy Jane from Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol run, except that Plumtree's don't have superpowers). The two of them meet in a mental hospital, but escape due to a convenient earthquake and from there hook up with the rest of the cast. It's hard to review this book without describing most of the setup of the plot because if I don't I feel like I'm losing context but at the same time there just seems to be no way around it. Powers' streamlining of the two earlier books is neat and fairly seamless but all the fancy stuff just seems to come at the expense of his normally complex plotting and we're left with something turgid, with the characters lurching from one scene to another. As long as you keep a handle on the main plot, you're all right but once sideplots start getting dragged in things start getting confusing since it's hard to say how relevant they are. Plus, a lot of the plot seems to consist of "plot coupons" where the characters have to gather special objects that will help them for no other reason than the plot requires it. Some of this confusion might be because I haven't read Last Call in years (or Expiration Date, though that was sooner), so that the stuff with the god Dionysus isn't too clear and I really wasn't clear what significance Armentrout had to the plot, except he was somebody to chase the other characters around (and that mannequin thing was weird), and I really don't know who half the other nameless people who were chasing the cast around were, either. Basically this is a book where you just have to "go with it" and hope that it will all make sense by the end and Powers is enough of a professional to keep things moving adequately so that you don't spend too much time worrying about the stuff that just doesn't seem to work. But while his other books felt tighly constructed and taut, this one has a more rambling feel to it and suffers a little bit for it. Not that there aren't bright spots, the relationship between Cochran and Plumtree (and her several personalities) is cute, the constant barrage of nifty ideas about ghosts is always fun, and I like how Powers does urban fantasy effortlessly, so that you could believe all this magic stuff is going on right alongside the "real world". The down side to all of this is that instead of getting a dazzling book (which is what we're used to) we get something that's merely "good". And as an introduction to the world of Tim Powers, it's terrible, but as a nice continuation of the lives of characters we've already met, it does that well and for longtime readers it might be worth it just for that.Earthquake Weather Overview

Dragon Weather (Obsidian Chronicles) ReviewLawrence Watt-Evans seems to be below the radar among fantasy writers these days. I can't imagine why -- his post-Ethshar novels ("Dragon Weather" and "Touched by the Gods") have each been gripping reworkings of tried-and-true fantasy themes.
In the case of "Dragon Weather," it's the old young-man-grows-up-and-avenges-wrongs formula, but Watt-Evans manages to breathe his own fresh life into it. Especially refreshing (well, maybe that's not the right word) is the casual brutality he brings into it -- diseased and maimed people fill the pages, much as one would actually expect in a barbaric pre-technological world.
Sure, some of the plot points are seen kind of early, but Watt-Evans even manages to bring them around in a refreshing way, even going so far as to pull a triple-cross on the reader at one point.
The ending suggests a sequel to the point that "To Be Continued" might as well have appeared beneath the last few lines. We can but hope.Dragon Weather (Obsidian Chronicles) Overview

Firestorm (Weather Warden, Book 5) ReviewI like the "Weather Warden" series a lot, so I snatched this right up and read it basically straight through. It was good, but at the same time I started getting nervous for the next in the series.
You see, the lead character in this novel goes through, well, Hell. In places almost literally. I'm beginning to get the feeling that I got while reading the Fisherman series, where after a while I just couldn't take the punishment anymore. The lead character in that series just takes beating after beating both physically and mentally, until he's a morass of guilt and psychological pain-- and the novel dwells on it.
Likewise the novels of Laurell K. Hamilton, which have grown from great adventure/horror/romance into page after page of egotistical males jealously growling at each other, or unearthly faeries playing high-handed politics. For what seems like the entire novel. I can't read them anymore, because I just got sick of it after a while.
The reason I bring these other series into this review (and I realize that Ms. Caine should be so lucky as to have a career like Hamilton's) is because they are examples of the flaw in "Firestorm"-- they lack balance. The mystery, the adventure, the description of new places and things, gets short shrift in the face of the punishment of the protagonist or an obssession with one single facet of the nature of people.
There's a lot of deus ex machina in "Firestorm." The lead character doesn't seem to be able to get herself out of a scrape-- she's always rescued just when she can't go on, used her last erg of strength, by her lover David or her daughter Imara, or typical love-triangle plot-thickener Lewis.
Caine has introduced a new type of supernatural being, called an Oracle, which she seems very excited about in the dedication of the book, but perhaps all the details about Oracles got edited out. They basically function as a McGuffin-- something to chase after, but which you never get to know the truth about.
Overall, a good book and I really enjoy the characters. I just hope the next book regains some of its balance, some of the humor and adventure of the earlier novels in this series.Firestorm (Weather Warden, Book 5) OverviewThe genie is out of the bottle. Rogue Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin is racing to New York to warn her former colleagues of the impending apocalypse. An ancient agreement between the Djinn and the Wardens has been broken, and the furious Djinn, slaves to the Wardens for millennia, are now free of mortal control. With more than half the Wardens unaccounted for in the wake of the Djinn uprising, Joanne realizes that the natural disasters they've combated for so long were merely symptoms of restless Mother Nature fidgeting in her sleep. Now she's waking up - and she's angry ---This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Chill Factor (Weather Warden, Book 3) ReviewChill Factor, the third installment of the Weather Warden series, is full of the non-stop action scenes and page-turning narrative that made Ill Wind and Heat Stroke riveting. Joanne Baldwin, Weather Warden, has been through a lot of things in a short period of time. She had been given a demon mark, gotten killed and reborn as a Djinn, only to return to her normal human form. Now she has to go after Kevin -- the troublemaker teenager that made her Djinn existence a living hell in Heat Stroke. He is in Las Vegas with powerful Djinn Jonathan. Jonathan wants to find missing Djinn, and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and that includes taking advantage of the powers that Kevin had stolen from Lewis. But Rachel hadn't expected coming across a secret anti-Warden organization. She also hadn't expected the twists that transpire between her and her Djinn lover David. There are many twists throughout the novel.
This novel is a roller coaster ride of action coupled with twists and turns that kept me riveted until the end. Many things happen in this third book -- things that make me understand some of the characters better. Lewis is finally developed in this installment. His behavior in the previous two books makes more sense to me. Marion is also further developed in this installment. She is a more dimensional character this time around. The other characters -- namely Jonathan, Kevin and Rahel -- are dark and have very obscure personalities. You don't know whether they are good or bad. I am sure they are intended to be that way. Joanne continues to be the young, fun, sassy heroine who loves fast cars, fast men and the latest fashion trends. She manages to maintain her spunk during the most chaotic scenes. She is one of the best heroines I've read in books of this genre. The Weather Warden series has become a favorite of mine. This series gets better with each installment and I cannot wait for the release of Windfall.Chill Factor (Weather Warden, Book 3) Overview

Storm: The Lightning Fairy (Rainbow Magic: The Weather Fairies, No. 6) ReviewMy soon-to-be 5 year old daughter and I LOVE this series. The stories are simple enough and short enough (about 40 min) to hold her attention as a read aloud, and there are enough illustrations peppered throughout to give her something to look at as I read. Both the stories and the illustrations are delightful. These books have ignited a passion for reading in my daughter, and she is now extremely motivated to read on her own so she doesn't have to wait for me to read them to her. We can hardly wait for the rest of the series to be published in the US. There are also the Jewel Fairies, the Pet Fairies, and the Party Fun Fairies that are only available in the UK right now, but it looks like some of them will be published here this summer. Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1) ReviewIf you are looking for an entertaining book to help you pass a dragging afternoon, this one might be it. Don't expect deep meanings or complicated character introspection, just lots of action-packed fun, lots of magic, a decent mystery and a very likable lead character -- which is better than I could say about many urban fantasy stories out there. Joanne is a Weather Warden with a big problem: she is running a race against time to rid herself of a Demon Mark inflicted on her by her former, corrupted boss. The mark is like a parasite: if she doesn't get rid of it fast, it will pervert her power and turn it into something impossible to control. If the other wardens get to her first, she will lose all her power, if not her life. The alternative is to pass the mark on to somebody else, preferably a djinn, and condemn him or her to a life of eternal torment. She thinks she knows her choices, but in fact she has no idea what her choices really are. As the story unfolds, friends and enemies become no longer easily distinguishable, even more so when willing friends are forced to turn into unwilling enemies. The one person that might have the key to it is nowhere to be found and doesn't seem that friendly after all.
If the plot structure sounds well-known to you, is because you've already encountered it (Jim Butcher's "Dresden files" series springs to mind, to give but an example). Hopefully, that won't prevent you from checking out the book: it makes good on its promises, with a nice twist at the end. If Harry Dresden charmed the readers with his dry wit and inborn talent of making a mess of just about everything, Joanne will appeal to the readers (some readers, anyway) with her disarming honesty about her likes and dislikes. Frankly, I found it quite refreshing to come across a female character that fantasizes freely about men, enjoys fast cars and sexy cloths, and is not ashamed to admit it. The djinns are a nice and less explored alternative to vampires, werewolves and fey creatures (all of which seem to me quite over-used nowadays). Generally, the characters of the story didn't have too much "texture" and appeared a bit too simplistic for my taste - but hey, there's plenty room for future development. On the whole, the action is very nicely paced, with just the right amount of suspense and magical deeds. In short, a promising beginning and a definite page-turner.Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1) Overview

Heat Stroke (Weather Warden, Book 2) ReviewJo was once a weather warden, helping to protect humanity from the wrath of Mother Nature. But at the end of the first book Jo is killed. David, a powerful djinn, manages to resurrect her as a djinn. Jo now must leave all things human behind and learn how to be a djinn.
But it is not that simple. She is still linked to David and draining his power. She must learn to harness power on her own. Meanwhile something strange is going on in the ethereal plane and it has David scared.
Jo is then assigned to study with Patrick, the only successful human-to-djinn transformation. And then the action really begins.
Unlike the first book which starts with Jo on the run, this one starts more slowly and it is quite a few pages before the action begins. But once it begins it does not stop. As the story races along we learn about the origins of the djinn, ifrit, what is going on in the ethereal plane, the meaning of servitude, more of how djinn work, and some of the limitations of the wardens. In the end we are left with a satisfying conclusion but also a cliffhanger for the next volume (it can't be released soon enough).
More action like in the first book but with greater depth to the world of the wardens and djinn. A great follow-up to the first and definitely not the last.Heat Stroke (Weather Warden, Book 2) OverviewMistaken for a murderer, Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin is hunted down and killed by her colleagues. Reborn as a Djinn, she senses something sinister entering earth's atmosphere-something that makes tomorrow's forecast look deadly.

Thin Air (Weather Warden, Book 6) ReviewFirst of all, it took me about three hours to get through this book. That's short even by my standards.
The good: Continues where Firestorm left off, lots of action, and an overall well-paced read. There was little lag time, and Ms. Caine makes her characters very interesting. I actually care about them. We got some cute backstories, more info on Venna (Alice, the Djinn), and the final reunion of Joanne with the Wardens (the constant on the run from everyone including her former employers was getting a bit old). The idea was fresh, at least to me, in that chunks of the story were told from the point of view of memories; it was a creative idea. The Sarah storyline was handled in an interesting manner, I'm curious how it plays out later on. It kind of came from nowhere, but provided an intriguing twist.
The mediocre: There are times where I scratch my head and go "huh?" at some of the events in this book (and others in the series). The "evil twin" concept didn't work too well for me, it just feels cliche. The storytelling keeps this from being too much of a negative, though.
The bad: There is always a bad, and in this case it's that Ms. Caine is falling into the LK Hamilton mode of deus ex machina. How convenient that the now-deceased Imara is the new Earth Oracle. How convenient that this results in Joanne getting Earth Warden powers at just the right time. How convenient that she is now the second most powerful person in the world. And how convenient that the Djinn who like her break away from the Djinn who mostly do not. It's things like this which bug me. Does Joanne need more powers? She is a take-no-grief character who started out as a Weather Warden, died, became a Djinn, was reborn, gained Fire Warden abilities, has several Djinn actively assisting her at every turn, and is now an Earth Warden, making her only the second triple-threat to exist. I hope Joanne doesn't go the way of Anita Blake and find new powers in every book. She doesn't need them, she is an amazing character all on her own.Thin Air (Weather Warden, Book 6) OverviewAfter preventing Mother Earth from destroying the planet, Joanne Baldwin lost her memories thanks to Ashan the djinn-and they will remain lost forever unless Joanne can recover her identity-and destroy the demon who is impersonating her, fabulous shoes and all...

Windfall (The Weather Warden, Book 4) ReviewJoanne Baldwin has had a tough time in this series. She started out on the run, died, became a Djinn, became human again and linked to David in a way that will spell their destruction. Now Joanne is in Florida as a morning weatherman's assistant (read that as comic relief) and is trying to rebuild her life now that she is no longer a Warden and no longer Dead. But things just won't let her rest.
Joanne's boss is too luck predicting the weather. The powers that be think Joanne is tampering with the weather. David has almost completely degenerated into an iffrit. Head Djinn Jonathan wants her to cure David or else. Joanne's sister is in trouble and crashing at her place. A cop if following Joanne around. And then things get bad and complicated. Joanne's past is catching up to her. The death of Quinn in Las Vegas has long arms. The Djinn are now tired of the rule of Jonathan and slavery to the humans. War is breaking out and Joanne is always right in the middle of things.
Well, the story of Joanne and David finally sees a form of resolution but the ending, combined with the excerpt of book five, shows us that things are not going to calm down for awhile. Joanne loves fast and powerful cars and her life seems to parallel that love. Interludes between the chapters provide some much-needed information about the way the world works although it takes a while to be obvious. All in all a fast-paced read that stands well with the rest of the series (now if I didn't have to wait a year for the next one). If you have been enjoying the series, this one will not let you down.Windfall (The Weather Warden, Book 4) OverviewWeather Warden Joanne Baldwin's stormy personal life is taking its toll on her patience-and her powers. But when the truce between the Wardens and the mystical Djinn starts to self-destruct, Joanne finds herself forced to choose between saving her Djinn lover, saving her Warden abilities-and saving humanity.
