Florida Hurricanes and Tropical Storms: 1871-2001, Expanded Edition ReviewI will make this short: I am the co-author with John Williams....Mr. Williams, a close friend and with an outstanding interest in weather, specifically hurricanes, died in 2007. He and I tried to make this book (and earlier editions) as accurate a possible and very readable.
While the book was published nearly 10 y ago, the reader will discover many facts and reports about history of hurricanes in Florida.
Our only disappointment was that the publisher did not take an active interest in publishing another edition which would have included the storms that occurred in Florida in 2004.

Climate (Our Fragile Planet) ReviewClimate is a great book to learn about the climate in one easy to read book. The author does a great job of explaining the details of the causes and effects of the world, and refers to several scientific studies that help put together this wealth of information.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the age group of 6th grade to 12th grade or an adult. This book makes you more aware of all the things we do in our daily lives and how it is effecting our world.
I even asked the author to explain a table to me a little better and it was answered on www.ExplainMyBook.com.Climate (Our Fragile Planet) Overview

The Other Side of the Island ReviewEver since Honor moved to Island 365 with her parents from the wild Northern Islands, she's been noticing that her parents don't quite fit in. Island life is peaceful and orderly since Earth Mother enclosed what land was still inhabitable after catastrophic weather terrorized the Earth. But her parents don't worship Earth Mother like everyone else does, and they don't follow the rules. And that scares Honor, because she learns that those who are unpredictable disappear - and they don't come back.
I really liked the premise of this dystopia because the societal ills stem not from your usual far right nightmares, but from a militant form of tree hugging. Not that I'm not all for preserving our environment, but this novel asks at what cost? And the answers are chilling.
Author Allegra Goodman spends a large part of the narrative on world creation and does it fantastically well. I loved how she took well known speeches from our world such as The Lord's Prayer and The Pledge of Allegiance and twisted them into Earth Mother propaganda. Even classic literature like the Wizard of Oz has been edited to fit Earth Mother's agenda of predictability. The resulting society is scary and powerful enough that its' agents are pretty much everyone - individual villains are quite beside the point.
Against this background Honor is realistically conflicted - she wants badly to fit in and for her parents to fit in, but she doesn't want them to be taken or harmed. When the inevitable happens though, Honor wakes from her Earth Mother induced coma and comes out kicking for an edge of your seat climax and resolution not to be missed.

History and Climate: Memories of the Future ReviewThe book is an edited volume of some thirteen chapters that are arranged within four major subsections plus an introduction. The book covers a very wide range of topics and each chapter is written in its own style. The climatic time scale is from about AD 1000 to close to the present day. The book is accessible to the advanced undergraduate onwards. The book would be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well anyone with an interest in past and recent climate change or variability and to some extent its impact on past societies.History and Climate: Memories of the Future OverviewMost studies of the impacts of climate change consider impactsin the future from anthropogenic climate change. Very few considerwhat the impacts of past climate change have been. History andClimate: Memories of the Future? contains 13interdisciplinary chapters which consider impacts of change indifferent regions of the world, over the last millennium. Initialchapters assess evidence for the changes, while later chaptersconsider the impacts on agriculture, fisheries, health, and society. The book will be of interest to anyone working in the field of climatechange and history.

A Reef in Time: The Great Barrier Reef from Beginning to End ReviewExcellent overview of the Great Barrier Reef's history. The text flows, is extremely easy to read, and the chapters and headings are set out logically. Much of the background involves controversial theories (e.g. reasons for major extinctions), and these, among others, are discussed thoroughly and with sufficient maps, given the relatively short length and overall scope of the book. The important points (carbon dioxide and ocean acidification) are drilled home repeatedly without a loss of their impact.
It is clear that the target audience for this book is for newcomers to the fields of coral research or paleontology. The only major flaw I see in the book are the many identical diagrams and photographs from previous publications by Dr. Veron, but, for those who pick up this book with no prior knowledge, this same information must be novel and informative. Even for those who have a background in the above fields, there is enough new information in this book to satisfy, and a few veritable gems of insight and observation.
This book has a few ideas which people may or may not agree with Dr. Veron, but it is well-researched and well-argued. The overriding message presented in the final chapters is certainly the focus of the book, and in the end, the other details which may or may not be correct rightly take a back seat.
Overall a recommended read.A Reef in Time: The Great Barrier Reef from Beginning to End Overview

Listen to the Rain ReviewI had this book when I was a child, and although we lost our copy a few years back, I still remember both the words and the pictures in almost perfect detail- it's that amazing. "Listen to the Rain" is evocative and beautiful. Captivating paintings interweave with words which are utterly beautiful in their rhythms and their fanciful, yet dead-on descriptions of the rain. This is an absolutely wonderful book, for both children and adults. When I was young, it was one of my favourites; I would read it with my sister, over and over, and it was one of the books which our parents actually enjoyed reading to us. It's one of the best children's books out there; not silly, not serious, just real.Listen to the Rain Overview

Finn Throws a Fit Review
Peaches are really pretty good . . . most of the time. You can sit in your little green chair with a smile on your face, swing your little feet tucked into those oversized yellow boots and just feel that fuzzy peach in your hand. Life is good. BUT on some days you just want to sit in your little green chair, wrap yourself up in your blankie, snuggle it up under your nose and when Mommy offers you that fuzzy peach all sliced up . . . BOOM! That is when little boys named Finn are cranky and "anything could happen." Daddy tries to play ball with him, but even the Jack-in-the-box goes BOING when the thunder and lightning (crash, boom, bang!) erupt over Finn's head. Look out! The little tornado is on the run! Life is not good.
Things rock. They roll. Finn slams the door in his nursery shutting out Mommy and Daddy. The little yellow boots go flying when Daddy brings him into the kitchen. The lightning makes everyone grimace. Did you ever hear such noise coming out of such a little boy? He's rocking, rolling and tumbling from here to there. He cries so much that the house begins to flood and Mommy has to stand on a table to escape the rising water, but the puppy dog simply paddles his way through the horror. "He screams. Look out! Avalanche! He kicks. An earthquake shakes the world." Will the little house survive the terrifying ordeal it has to go through when "FINN THROWS A FIT?"
This is a hilarious little story that every parent can relate to. I laughed and giggled and recalled a few choice memories with each page. Tantruming toddlers are a fact of life and adorable little Finn with his little blankie and little yellow boots will charm your socks off, even when he's rocking and rolling through the entire house. The lively appealing art work adds just the right touch to this zany, but realistic story. I personally think every grandparent should buy a copy of this and give it to their children in thanks for all the (crash, boom, bang!) memories. Life is good!Finn Throws a Fit OverviewWho among us hasn't encountered that force of nature called "a fit"? A best-selling author and illustrator depict a toddler's tantrum in all its horror and hilarity.Finn likes peaches. Usually. But not today. Today Finn doesn't like anything. Uh-oh. Is Finn going to throw a fit? Author David Elliott directs the event with wit, warmth, and appropriate wariness, while illustrator Timothy Basil Ering's energy and whimsy match this tantrum turn for turn. At once empathetic and uproariously funny, this picture book speaks directly to anyone (young or old) who has ever had — or tried to contain — a real earth-quaking, ground-shaking, full-on fit.
